Summary: A surprisingly weak offering in the series.
Review: Avenger is the kind of book that I both liked and didn't like at the same time. The virogen crisis and the intrigue surrounding Sarek's supposed murder kept me reading it, but a few other things made me want to stop. First, Mr. Shatner way overglorified James Kirk. Kirk was basically described as being the greatest hero the Federation had ever known, especially evident in the thoughts of a certain female officer he meets up with. Second, Kirk's philosophy concerning the balance of nature was more than a little hard for me to swallow, especially considering that it was coming from James Kirk of all people. And third, the subplot that gave the book its name was just too weird for me to accept. Overall, I think this book was well-written with some nice character development, but the things I listed above kept me from rating it any higher than three stars.

Summary: Great
Review: I never really trusted books written by actors so I stayed away from William Shatner for awhile. However, I saw Avenger at my library and couldn't resist. It is a great book with an original plot. It is so different from those go-lucky Federation always wins stories. I like the part about Spock and his father too.

Summary: Better than the Return
Review: In Avenger Shatner finally invents his own characters instead of relying on regular Trek characters from tv and film. I like the relationship btwn Cmdr. MacDonald and Dr. M'Benga but MacDonald calling M'Benga "Bones" was too corny and uninventive. Shatner should try to create more of his own Starfleet characters more often instead of relying on characters from DS9, Voyager, and Next Generation. Shatner also should work on using less narration and more dialogue between the characters in his story. Too much narration makes for a boring read. I have to say this is the best one even though I am currently reading Spectre by Shatner.

Summary: A Sequel to the Dramatic Return of Kirk!
Review: A truly fabulous book, even if you don't like Kirk. Lots of action, a great plot line, intriguing mysteries, and a phantastic final showdown. In short, all the best Star Trek can offer. A must for any Trekkie, no matter how much you hate Kirk (If you don't hate him, even better!)

Summary: Drivel Worth Hearing
Review: Unlike some that may have read and heard this piece of Shatner literary work, I found it to be more of a bridge between the two 'Generations' in the present time frame of Star Trek than any ego-driven "drivel".

One of the most interesting, and nostalgic, scenes was the Vulcan prison where Spock and Kirk are confronted with having to defeat a security cell which was designed by the most brilliant minds in the lore of Star Trek. I found this to be classic Trek that Gene would, (or maybe DOES),approve of without reservations.

I always enjoy being given a chance to re-live my youth and the admiration for the original series(TOS) that I felt at that time.

Thanks Bill!!!!

Summary: Avenger ties all the loose ends with great results!!!
Review: Shatner surpassed himself with this one. Return was good, but, Avenger it keeps you on the edge of edge the galaxy in anticipation, and cinches it with surprise. Highly recommend this to "trekkie"

Summary: Chock-full of the good stuff fans of Kirk and Co. want!
Review: Have you missed the original crew of the enterprise? If yes, this is a must for you! After years of aching for some class-A dialogues in the tradition of Spock versus Bones/Spock advises Kirk, comes Avenger and takes you on a round trip into the universe of our favourite space faring buddies. Funny, exciting and a good story, this book was written for all you die-hard Kirk and Co. fans.

Summary: the best of the Star Trek books written by Wm.Shatner
Review: The sub-plots are well thought out and the character development for Kirk and Spock and McCoy made them 3-dimensional rather than the flat personalities seen in most Star Trek novels. The personalities of the Enterprise crew were accurate as well although not in as much depth. I thought Shatner did a good job of presenting the dilemma of how to develop the use of resources and how to manage our use of the environment. Of course no answer was presented. Perhaps in future novels possibilities could be investigated. How to manage the environment is second only to how to treat your neighbor. I am a teacher and a biologist and could not help but note some glaring errors in the biology as it was presented. Here are my observations:

p. 47: RNA is single-stranded so we do not speak of pairs of things with RNA. There are absolutely no amino acid pairs in either RNA or DNA. p. 47-48: The virogen resides within cells and divides when cells divide. That would not ! explain why it is spread by exhalation and secretions. In mammals, rapidly dividing cells line the digestive tract and more slowly dividing cells underlie the epidermis. Other adult somatic cells divide only upon injury. p. 89: The word epiphytic refers to plants that grow on other plants. If it floats in the air it is simply air-borne or free-living. p. 172: -357 degrees Celsius is way below absolute zero, which is -273 degrees C. p. 349: Algae as well as plant cells have a cell membrane and a cell wall. The cell wall does not prevent the passage of molecules while the cell membrane is selective. Large molecules and ions and charged molecules are restricted through the cell membrane. Structures such as organelles (mitochondria and chloroplasts) could never pass through the cell membrane or the cell wall.

All of these instances could be written accurately and should be used. Star Trek novels are an important form of public education. My suggestion is that so! meone knowledgeable in these matters be consulted before th! e information is printed and delivered to the public.

Summary: "Avenger" is a good, fast-paced sequel to "The Return"!
Review: Shatner did it again! "Avenger" is a good book, but is isn't as good as "The Return". (But if you want to split hairs, I think you would be hard pressed to find a Star Trek novel better than "The Return") Although it features the Next Generation cast, this story is mainly about Kirk and Spock on their respective missions. Kirk to find the cure to the virus that has Starfleet placing entire star systems under quarantine. Spock searching for proof that his father Sarek was murdered. They intertwine with the Enterprise-E crew to make a story that will have you guessing until the end. It also does one heck of a job explaining Kirk's survival from the Borg Homeworld. "Avenger" also sets up the next novel in the series, "Spectre". A must read if you love Star Trek!

Summary: Lots of great action and suspence
Review: William Shatner has done an excellent job yet again. This book was fabulous! I especially liked the part where Kirk and the escaped from the Vulcan space dock\prison. There was also some great action such as the battle between the Tobias and the enemy ships in the atmosphere of Teilani's home planet.(I forgot what it was called, thought it had something to do with the children of heaven or something.) I myself am a fan of Mr. Shatner and have read Avenger, Return, Ashes of Eden, and am currently reading Spectre. This happens to be one of my most favorite Star Trek books.
