Rating: Summary: A Mess Review: What happened here? I'll tell you: Shatner's impressive drive toward narrative maturity just hit a pothole, that's what. And there's only one thing to blame, or rather two.Judith Reeves-Stevens and the horrific Garfield Stevens. Shatner's so=called collaborators, who are no more than hacks on a good day, and a malicious, baneful presence on every other. How much longer will the voice of Shatner be silenced by the ineptitude of these people? Certainly someone needs to "write" the book. Someone needs to create the "plot", "characters." The "title". But beyond that, what is their function? Their function is to obfuscate the voice of Shatner! Here is an excerpt from an original Shatner manuscript: "out along the quays one finds solace in the distilled silence of the waves, the frothing brine, one hangs aloft a solitary hand. agenbite of inwit? Quae quoram. Mone me, si erro." Now here is the same excerpt after having undergone the "reeves" treatment: "Captain! He's got a gun!" Mr Chekhov said. Kirk looked up. A Malurusian! "Halt," Kirk said. "Never." Sacrilege!
Rating: Summary: Adventure at its best for those who love action Review: William Shatner is my favorite novelist. He knows how to write action stories that are also very thought-provoking. Shatner's name on a book means that you are going to have a quality read. Avenger is one of his best, thoroughly enjoyable. It is the end of the Trilogy that began with Return. It also preceeds the new series that begins with Spectre. Kirk, Spock, and Picard must solve the problem of the virogen plauge that is wrecking the Federation. Loose ends from previous Star Trek novels and movies are tied up. The book leaves one with a lot to think about with regard to ecology and eco-terrorism. The Federation by homogenizing environments puts the galaxy in danger of being overcome by disease. The story is also very moving and has a surprise ending I will not reveal.
Rating: Summary: What a read! Review: Kirk returns from THE RETURN in an epic tale that spans the generations. With the viral plague spreading throughout the Federation, Kirk returns to Teilani (who is first seen in THE ASHES OF EDEN) and Chal, where he once again teams up with the Enterprise-E crew on an astounding adventure that answers the question of how he knew he'd die alone and reveals the Federation to live but so many years. This is truely a magnificent work.
Rating: Summary: A great end to a Trilagey Review: Avenger is a great why to end the story started in Star Trek: Ashes of Edean. This a great book that I could not put down. I have read all 3 books and I am looking forward to Specter and all the others that William Shatner.
Rating: Summary: Still warm Review: Willian Shatner came up with another good idea. Although I have some advice , 1 more book . I just started "Spectre" and it's already dragging . So Quit while your on top and don't let yourself slide away.
Rating: Summary: perfect star trek Review: I read this book in a matter of one day......excellent true star trek, William shatner knows star trek better than most of the writers to date. remember it started with captan kirk he should live on in books. remember when star trek was fun. get this book!
Rating: Summary: OK story, but where do Kirk and Teilani fit in? Review: This novel is all right, but it's a story that would have been fine for Picard and crew to handle. True, it gives us a chance to learn that Kirk was not killed at the end of "The Return", but there just isn't the excitement and suspense as there was in "The Return". However, if you are going to continue with the other reads after this one, such as "Spectre" and "Dark Victory", then you'll need to read this one to understand how Kirk is resurrected again. Otherwise, a rather weak entry into Shatner's trilogy.
Rating: Summary: Poor Spock. Review: If you were to ask me, Shatner is abusing Characters. How many times has Kirk been resurected now? The thing that mainly got me disturbed about this book is that Shatner has reduced Spock beyond belief. At the end of ST 6 , we finally think that Spock has found a balance between his human and Vulcan sides. What's with all of this "He'll have to deal with my human side" junk? The virogen Crisis kept me reading, but this book is a far cry from The Return.
Rating: Summary: Its "to be continued" Review: The story isn't bad, a little disjointed at times, but when you near the end you realize the end is not near! I saw no indication on the cover or Amazon's info. to indicate the story was incomplete. I would think there should be some indication that this is one of a series, and where in the sequence it lies.
Rating: Summary: The Wonder Years, by William Shatner Review: To his credit, Shatner has shouldered much of the burden for novels that "fill in the gaps" between motion pictures. Personally, I like his approach in both The Return and The Avenger, the idea that things _do_ move on. I despise this recent trend in Star Wars and Star Trek of "remember when" stories where we have to go back in time and "see how it all began." However, I was a little disappointed in Avenger...one gets the feeling that Shatner is like Captain Kirk in one important way; while he claims he's tired of the role of Captain, he can't quite bring himself to let it go. I don't know if he's trying to create some kind of legacy to survive him or what, but it's obvious Shatner does not want to see Captain Kirk ever die. Worse, the treatment of Spock in the story was very sad. Spock, a character of proud dignity, is reduced to a sniveling and whiny Vulcan more appropriate for the Wonder Years or Growing Pains. I can accept the whole Bendii disease, but the effect it had on Spock's behavior was a little too exaggerated for me. I don't think even a disease could have caused Spock to break out in a big smile when he and Kirk first meet, nor would he scream. Overall, the story is a good filler for those of us who have to wait 2 years between movies, but I think the overemphasis on 30 year old episodes and the aggrandizement of Kirk is a definite turnoff.
