Rating: Summary: A Good Look To The Secerts of this Mage Review: I thought this was a good book to read. It allows you to fully grasp all of the other books that Ed Greenwood has written such as 'Spellfire'. Do miss reading this book. Next on my list is Elminster in Myth Drannor
Rating: Summary: Ed, Ed, Ed.... look mate, just stop willya ? Review: I mean, you can't seriously be insulting my intelligence with this garbage without insulting your own at the same time. We all KNOW Elminster is a fantasy version of you. Keep your fantasies to yourself mate, don't inflict them in print on us. Nobody wants to read about all-powerful magicians so far up their own a** they can see out their mouth. He's just not interesting. Worse he's a goddamn pest; poking his nose in everywhere and righting wrongs. And why do people have to wander about naked in your books all the time ? It happens in this one though it's not as bad as Spellfire where one young woman burns her own clothes off every chapter. Go back to writing RPG stuff where you merely blatantly disregard core rules. There's only one thing I want to know about Elminster and that's why he's spent so much time devising spells to take down supposedly impregnable Prismatic Spheres. Did someone get so annoyed with your tiresome creation he had his character throw Elminster through one ? I wish I had a Sphere handy right now, I'd throw this book into it.
Rating: Summary: Hideous! By far we finally have a fantasy emergency Review: Oh geeez, that book was worse than a lobotomy. I did not know such a thing was possible, but Ed Greenwood has done it again. He has negatively topped his previous novels. Elminster is one of my favourite characters in the realms as well, Palatka. And I think Greenwood has savaged him in this novel. How dare he do such a thing? As a die hard FR fan myself, I say kick him out to prevent further damage. So all of you who praise a book too quickly, listne to yourselves and think again before putting that down in a review.
Rating: Summary: Excellent !! By far we finally have a background story. Review: I disagree with the badmouthing of Ed Greenwood. Elminster is one of the most important characters in the Forgotten Realms world. And I have to say he is one of my favorite characters in the realms. I'm a die hard FR fan and Ed is a great writer. He is the man responsible for the best world that ever hit the shelf. So back off!!!
Rating: Summary: The perfect making of a powerful mage.... Review: This story is perfect with all the right elements of action, drama, suspense and romance. I would have to say one of the best books I have read in a long time. Don't pass this one up, you will be sorry.....The beginning to a Great Mage....
Rating: Summary: Good to the last drop. I'm off to Myth Drannor. Review: I'll make this short and sweet. Elminster is just as I had hoped. All too often charactes become mages because they are too weak to become fighters. El is the exact opposite, he became a mage to become a better fighter. Don't let other people tell you what Elminster is supposed to be like for who whould know better than Ed Greenwood, the real Elminster. If you want to read about a bad arse dude read this book.
Rating: Summary: Please Ed! Find a new hobby! Review: Look, I know Ed Greenwood is a man who has done a lot for The Forgotten Realms. I bow my head to his achievement of making this imho THE greatest fantasy series ever. But this work is totally symptomatic for his style of writing! Given, his plots are action filled and quite unpredictable, but that does not make them any more enjoyable. Has anyone besides me noticed how Ed Greenwood loves to pull a protagonist out of his hat, give him/her incredible god-like powers and then send his character on some gigantic rampage? (So seen in Spellfire, Stormlight, Crown of Fire). Noone can touch them coz they are near invincible and have an attitude that says "Hahaha, puny mortal. I'll kick your a** and 50 others while I finish my lunch!" Elminster is one of those all powerful characters who can die and come back, but he has style, coz he is funny and quite modest about his power. Plus he is just too darn kewl to show off his powers and go out on a Kickass rampage. At least that's what I thought before. I am probably not the only realms reader surprised by the ease with which this boy goes through the character classes, racks up power, and goes on a huge crusade against his powerful enemies (no wonder when he is being backed by Mystra herself!) I tried to follow the story, to forgive the plot holes, read about the spell battles, and tried to enjoy the other characters; but you cannot do that when you have a constant headache from the arrogance with which this author leads his main character. One of the great pillars of Faerun, a mystery older than time itself, ruined! Elminster has lost much of his luster in this novel. Good going, Ed! If you want to save the reputation of mages in the Realms beg Elaine Cunningham to write about the past of Khelben Arunsun and watch how she spins a tale realms readers will relish and read again and again.Divination
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable Review: This is the first time I encountered the character of Elminster. So far, I'm really enjoying reading it. I find the reading not too heavy. And having not read anything about this magic-user, this is a good start - from the begining. Hope to enjoy reading more. Oh, one thing I find a little too much was Elminster being turned into Elmara. This twist should have been saved and devoted to another story where it could be explored more dramatically
Rating: Summary: Greenwood disappoints me again Review: The genius behind much of the creation of the Forgotten Realms needs to back off from writing novels. The character Elminster is one of the most detailed and one of my favorite characters in the Forgotten Realms. This novel destroys all of the high hopes I had at his origins. I think what mostly annoyed me was the arrogance of Elminster (Elmara) during his years of growing. The scene where the farmer wakes Elmara to tell her that 50 soldiers discovered her whereabouts and were coming, really made me upset. Her response of "get me some warm cider while I snap my fingers and make all of the bad guys disappear" reminded me of some two-bit child's superhero cartoon.
Rating: Summary: Finally, we know Elminster's troubling past... Review: I was looking forward to discover Elminster's struggle and youth, and I did not go unrewarded. I never guessed how he became what he is now, especially when he had to cha... uh, no spoilers, of course! That's why a Forgotten Realms fan ought to buy it right now! ^^ Anyhow, I loved the detailed setups, unpredictable turn of events, countless plot twists and of course the themes.
