Summary: If you were fan of the episode The Enterprise Incident...
Review: If like me, the Enterprise Incident was your favorite episode of the original 79, you may be mildly let down with this book. I devoured this book, reading the last half in ONE night, for me that's a record. The instant I read the back of the text a relief crossed my mind, A. this wasn't one of those long winded "series" books I don't like (New Earth? Poppycock!) and B. I knew I would once again be in the delightful company of The Romulan Commander! This was a great read, but I was ultimately let down with the brief (though WELL written) moments with her.

The title alone suggested (to me at least!) that the story would involve her more...

The good news is S.D. Perry has put together a good mystery and even sprinkled some other interlinking moments from the original 79 just for flavor. Also, there may be a bit too many characters and at times a bit hard to follow. To counter another review here I must say, Kirk indeed goes toe to toe with a member of 31, you just need to read between... the would be sheets (wink).

Summary: Section 31
Review: It was an interesting story line but i think they really needed to go into alittle more detail. As I said the storyline itself was'nt bad. I'm looking forward to more.

Summary: At least it didn't suck
Review: Not bad escapist fare. Every once in awhile, I pick up a Star Trek audio cassette and listen to it in the car. This was the first Star Trek book I'd actually read. The "Section 31" books intrigued me when I first saw them. I wish that there was more about Section 31 in this book, but it was good brain candy.

Summary: Disappointing for a Section 31 book
Review: Rated by the standards applied to a typical Star Trek novel, this book was acceptable at best, and mediocre at worst. When rated by the higher standards which I think must be applied to a book involving Section 31, an entity that holds so much mystery and intrigue, it has been found to be entirely disappointing.

As a whole, the book suffers from several shortcomings. First, the plot is too non-specific. In other words, the story that unfolds could have been about any Federation starship, commanded by any captain, and facing any villain. The characters were not compelling. The author fails to expound to the reader any insight into the main characters of the Enterprise. All of the characters, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, remains unsatisfactorily flat throughout the book. Specifically, there was lot of potential to explore Spock's inner self that had gone unexploited, truly a regrettable mistake on the part of the author.

Secondly, the plot line lacked the suspense that is critical to any story. Half way through the story, you realize what the villain is trying to do, and had you been familiar with a certain episodes of Star Trek Voyager, the conclusion is foregone. Thus, the rest of the book looses the sense of urgency and suspense.

All in all, this book has been found wanting on a multitude of levels. My only hope is that none of the other three Section 31 books follow the footsteps of this particular author.

Summary: Cloak and Dagger
Review: S.D. Perry has written a terrific story with the Section 31 branch of Starfleet. It's a CIA like branch that obeys no laws and will use any means to protect the Federation. The question as to how or why Jim Kirk's friend was murdered is never truly answered. Poor guy was in a transporter accident! However, it makes for good reading. My only wish was that this author could have written all four books. All the characters are true to their tv roots. This series should have been one large giant novel. You never see Stephen King having a story in four novels. Star Trek should do the same. Less books. Better editing makes for a better story.

Summary: Good Author pens a real stinker
Review: S.D. Perry has written some of the more enjoyable Star Trek novels, this is not one of them. The main complaint is that the section 31 tie in is so nebulous. At first I thought this would make the story intriguing, but it turned out to be the most disappointing aspect. Ms. Perry does not seem as familiar with the TOS series characters. Nothing new is revealed,(hard to do in a ST novel but not impossible) and at a scant 200+ pages this looks like a rush job. Also the secondary story falls completely flat. We are just all suppose to know that McCoy's cure happens in the events from TOS episode "For the World is Hollow and I have touched the Sky". Why was this even in there? Answer: just to fill up the required word count.

Summary: Section 31 Cloak
Review: Scientists missing, mysterious disaster, cloaking technology and sinister underlying purposes... all good for a Kirk adventure. Now, Kirk must save the Alpha Quadrant again.

I found the book to be an easy and enjoyable read, bringing back some of the adventure when Kirk first stole the Romulan cloaking device in the Original TV series.

As the Section 31 book series touts "No Law. No Conscience. No Stopping Them". But they haven't met Captain James T. Kirk.

Read it and enjoy.

Summary: The Trek Files
Review: SD Perry delivers her story in an interesting way. Rather than a bland omniscient point of view we actually follow the points of view of all the major characters in different moments. This is a great device that shows Ms. Perry really knows how to voice these characters...an uncommon ability among the Trek novelists. It's just too bad that she does not have a better story to tell. Much like an X-Files episode, we have a great build up. I was completely drawn in by the first half of the book.

But she weighs her story down with TOO MUCH continuity. She knows her Trek alright...or at least she puts forth all this effort in convincing us she does...with references to all these extraneous episodes and, in my opinion, to a clunky Bones subplot that detracts from the main story. The end falls a little short...but I think it is a pretty tall order to provide a satisfying ending to a piece of heroic fiction that involves an supposedly unstoppable enemy...ask the writers of the X-Files Movie. Still I think Ms. Perry will provide us with some great Treks in the future when not so limited by the demands of a series like Section 31.

Summary: "OK Is The Best I Can Give It"
Review: The book deals with a secret experiment related to the TV episode where the Enterprise stole a Romulan cloaking device. It starts off very well as Kirk and co. must stop a runaway starship. And ending was also very exciting. But the middle of the book could have been better. Some parts were a little bit slow. Also there was no drama when Dr. McCoy comes down with a terminal disease. Please, you know he's not gonna die. I did like getting into the minds of the supporting characters like Uhura, Sulu and Chekov. Also some good scenes where Kirk's faith in Starfleet is really tested the more he uncovers about this illegal experiment. I just wish the author could have included more alien characters in the story. Like in Star Trek, all the crew members, all the starship captains and all the scientists are human. The Federation has over 600 planets. A little species variety, please.
