Summary: A truly well-written Star Trek book
Review: This is a superb book, going far beyond the norm of printed Star Trek fiction. The writing is brilliant, and paints a complex and tragic portrait of one of Trek's best characters. Every chapter caught me a little by surprise at the sensitivity of the author to his character and the grace of the story's execution. This is perhaps the only Star Trek book I would recommend to my friends without apologies or qualifications.

Summary: An above-average book by someone who shouldn't be this good
Review: When I heard that Andrew J. Robinson was writing the "memoirs" of his marvelous DS9 character, I figured it was another SF vanity project like the TekWar books or the like. Surprisingly, Robinson not only understands Elim Garak but also fleshes out Cardassia a lot more than any writer at DS9 did. He creates a world that is both believable and alien.

There are flaws, such as the reason Garak was exiled to DS( and the amount of guilt that Garak feels for Cardassian misdeeds in the past, but this is a very good read and better than most of the Trek books I've read. Carey, Gray, and most of the rest have nothing on this "amateur".

Summary: A superb journey, centered around a great character!
Review: I often have to chuckle when I hear folk expressing incredulity when an 'actor' tries their hand at being a 'writer', as if the two talents are always mutually exclusive.

Well, Andrew J. Robinson has done a wonderful job creating a novel that is as entertaining as it is informative. While reading this book, I found myself thoroughly immersed in the current chapter, while simultaneously yearning to return to the other settings (especially Garak's early training years). The exploration of this particular Cardassian's life and memories proved to be nothing less than enthralling.

No need to repeat any of the excellent info already provided by the previous reviewers, so suffice to say that this book is a must-read. I won't even qualify my recommendation by routinely stating this is just one of the 'best Star Trek books that I've ever read'; nope, this is truly one of the finest fictional works that I have read in quite some time.

Kudos to Mr. Robinson for this tremendous effort...

Summary: Stiching all the pieces together
Review: Only one person could write a book in first person of Garak. Andrew J. Robinson got into the head of his own character and revealed amazing details of this complex character's history and mind. And all at the same time, Andrew brought in backgrounds of so many already established Cardassian characters from Star Trek. If your a Garak fan, then this is a must.

Summary: Wonderful tale
Review: This is one of the best star Trek novels I have ever read. I have read many and hardly have I ever finished one and wished it didn't end. The story was creatively written and very well developed. The 400 page novel allowed the reader to go in depth with the plots. The author is very talented to write such a creative piece of work. Hope to see another novel by him. I am not even really a DS9 fan and I love this book!

Summary: Ender meets Star Trek
Review: This is a great book. It reminds me of the Ender's Game child/spy training schools with the familiar Star Trek characters. However, the erratically placed journal entries chops the flow of the story and left me skimming those pages. But all in all, I was very impressed.

Summary: a stitch in time worth your time
Review: in this book the author tells of the life of the cardassian tailor, elim garak. i am one of those readers that thought the aforementioned character was underused on the series, "deep space nine". what i liked most about the book: the narrator does not try to show garak as a saint or sinner. in many star trek novels characterizations are too often drawn in black and white. this one is not done in this manner. what i liked least: unlike many star trek novels the plot does not move in as linear manner. a final note: the average cardassian would probably not feel out of place in great britain's elite public school system.

Summary: Plainly and simply great
Review: Since many years I am a Star Trek-fan and I always liked reading the books, but most of the more recently published ST-novels disappointed me, being merely new versions of old stories. Not so this one! Andrew J. Robinson has been "Garak" long enough to tell his story in a truly Cardassian way - the book explains many facets of Garaks personality and it is a thoroughly credible portrait of a man - sorry, a Cardassian - who tried to live up to impossible expectations all his life, until he fails and then has to find another reason to live. Every Star-Trek-fan knows some of Garak's story - here is the rest of it and it perfectly matches the personality.

I liked the story - there is enough action in it to satisfy any 'Trekkie' and enough romance to satisfy any human soft-heart; but what I liked most is that it's written in a truly Cardassian philosophy - logical, sometimes brilliant, but also inhuman in its harshness and cruelty. Here is an author who not only invents alien worlds but also goes all the way and invents an alien mind, a different way of thinking. Nobody should expect a Cardassian to be cute or cuddly, nor his story to be lovely - this is as clear, hard and brutal as broken crystal, and sometimes it lights up as broken crystal in sunshine. For those who liked old Star-Trek novels like "Spock's World" this book should be on top of their list - infinite diversity at last!

Summary: A Stitch in Time is a good read
Review: How many Star Trek actors could write such a credible story about their characters? This is an amazing piece of work - it weaves together many things you might know from the show with all the back story that made Garak credible. And it is funny too. If you ever thought the writers were the only ones making up those characters, read this book. It's better than 95% of the Star Trek books out there.

Summary: A Stitch in Time
Review: I thought this was good book....made everything about Garek understandable....I totally got why this book went back and forth..he was telling u his life and why he was the man he was..plus why he was on Deep Space 9. I give this book 4 stars!
