Summary: Another title would be: "DM's handbook on Dark Elves"
Review: I advise reading this series before going to the Icewind Dale trilogy simply because it gives you a better feel for the Drizzt Do'Urden character when you read from origin on. This should be read <correction> This is REQUIRED READING for any DM who wishes to run a campaign set in the underdark. Salvatore did his homework on this one. This book is a classic waiting to be made into a cheesy B movie (a la Robert Heinlein's Puppet Masters). Salvatore presents a HUMONGOUSLY detailed setting for this story not only painting the broad strokes of detail in your mind's eye, but then going over them with a fine-toothed comb until you have a fleshed-out idea of the setting & the inhabitants of Menzoberranzan. I enjoyed every minute of reading this book. I recommend it to anyone who has ever enjoyed a fantasy novel.

Summary: Better than Dragons of Autumn Twilight
Review: About four years ago I read the Dragonlance Chronicles and the Legends, and I thought they were the best books ever created! I thought no book could ever beat the Dragolance series. Then I was in the bookstore looking through the Dragonlance section and a man, asked me if I ever read any Dragonlance books. He said that he did, but didn't seem too excited about them. Then he asked me if I have evr read the Forgotten Realm books. I said no, and asked him how he liked them. He said they were the most amazing books, and that R.A. Salvatore was the most talented writer on Earth. I couldn't see it. I found it very hard to beleive that anyone could write as good as Maragaret Weis and Tracy Hickman! So I went on with the DL series, for three more years. Now four years later, I don't know why but I started reading Homeland. It was absolutelt great and Drzzt Do'Urden is the coolest character. I now think Forgotten Realms are much better than Dragonlance.

Summary: Beyond excellent
Review: I am an avid reader of every genre. I have read all the great Fantasy authors from Tolkein to Jordan, to Brooks. R.A. Salvatore is far and away the best. I have read all 10 of his books that deal with Drizzt (the main character) and plan on reading the next one. This book masterfully paints you pictures of swordplay, emotion, and the interesting settings. I read the first two of his books in one day, because they were so good, and finished all 10 in a week. ANYONE who hates this book is because they have an inherent fear of being a follower. This is not some hyped up review. I first picked up this book because I was going on a long car drive. I knew nothing of the author or the book. I had never even had heard of them. 10 hours later I stopped at another bookstore to get the sequel. All my friends love this book and my mom, who hates fantasy, loves it. This book makes me wish that I was not such a fast reader so that the experience of living the story would last longer.

Summary: Forgive me brother!
Review: For years I have been making fun of my brother and his choice of literature - Fantasy.

Then I picked up Homeland.

less than 24 hours later I put it down and called my brother asking if he got any Salvatore novels.

Every aspect of this book is brilliant. Why isn't there a movie based on salvatores work? Go to work Hollywood!

ps. I killed drizzt in Baldur's Gate...shame on my murderous soul!

Summary: outcast
Review: R.A. Salvatore's Homeland begins the story of outcast Drizzt Do'Urden, a dark elf born to evil who literally fights his way to enlightenment and redemption. Set in the underground world of the Drow, the tone of this book is dark and menacing. The Drow society is horrible; the noble houses scheme against and murder eachother to the pleasure of their spider goddess. There is no shortage of hateful characters. Drizzt's only refuge is training weapons with his instructor, Zaknafein, with whom he shares a closer relationship. The setting is detailed and imaginative, the political intrigue is fascinating, the plot keeps one turning pages, but in truth this book would fly on the strength of Drizzt's character alone. You'll read the all of the following books

Summary: Wow
Review: I started reading this particular type of genre when I was in the sixth grade ... that was last century ... well, the Ice Age actually. The Lord of the Rings has and always will be a favorite, and it is because of Mr. Tolkien, God rest his soul, that fantasy fiction has flourished. If you pay close attention to the place names, towns, halls, mountains, etc., in Mr. Salvatore's work, you will seem many similarities. MANY.

I am now 27 years old... OY! And I just had the pleasure of reading The Dark Elf trilogy last year, and The Icewind dale books, and the rest of Drizzt's adventures. I was highly entertained, and impressed. My only drawback, is that someone else got to Guen's name before me, so I had to change the spelling. Please forgive me oh gentle creature.

If you have not had the opportunity to read these books, I urge you to do so. Even if you are 10, 30, or 60... everyone could use a great dose of fantasy once in a while. Esp. when it is written with a master's pen...

*Bowing down to Mr. Salvatore, and his liege Mr. Tolkien*

Summary: Classic Heroes never die
Review: R.A. Salvatore has created a classic hero, in the character of Drizzt Do'Urden, who will capture the reader. The character addresses issues of pride, racism, good v. evil, right v. wrong, faith, and fidelity throughout the entire Underdark saga.

The contrasting fragility and strength of Do'Urden will touch your heart.

Possibly my favorite character ever written.

Summary: One of the greatest fantasy books ever written
Review: I have to admit i havent read that many Forgotten Realms books, all i've read is this, Baldur's gate, and the Icewind Dale trilogy. I have to say, this is one of the most well written and touching books ive ever read. Its descriptions are so vivid and lifelike, you can actually see the things. And the whole situation with Zaknafein and Drizzt was so touching, it brought tears to my eyes when Zak died and whispered his last words for Drizzt. This book deserves 5 million stars, too bad i cant give it that much. R.A. Salvatore would be giving J.R.R. Tolkien a run for his money if he were alive.

Summary: Will's Guide to Homeland
Review: It's the Great Will again, master of the Forgotten realms novels. Homeland is most definately one of Mr. Salvatore's greatest works. It stars the great Drizzt Do'Urden, possibly the most well known and most well loved character in the forgotten realms world. Reading this book, I found myself constantly thinking of experiences that were similar to Drizzt's experiences. for those of you who have not read this novel, it is well worth the price. This novel will keep you awake until you finish it.
