Rating: Summary: great book by a master author Review: The crystal shard was the first forgotten realms book I ever read. Since I read the crystal shard I have gone on to read other forgotten realms books by different authors such as elaine cunningham and ed greenwood. R.A. Salvatore is still my favorite author. I have read all of the drizzt books and Salvatore hasn't dissapointed me yet. Keep up the good work bob.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book with tons of action & character development! Review: This was the first ever public offering of R. A. Salvatore's writing ability. It's no wonder he's written so many others since! He's a great author, and this book showcases his writing ability. It's filled with plot twists & subplots & everything else that makes a story interesting. Anyone who is interested in reading through the Drizzt Do'Urden storyline, I advise reading "The Dark Elf Trilogy" first to get more of a chronological progression in the character's developement, however, nothing is lost by reading this book first. It's a great story by a great storyteller.
Rating: Summary: Good start to the trilogy Review: I'm writing this after having finished the whole trilogy. All 3 books of "Icewind Dale" are fun and a quick read and are filled with action and adventure. An interesting foe in the evil mage Kessel and the rest of his allies - the demon Errtu, the goblins, orcs and giants.
Rating: Summary: His best one yet! Review: This has got to be one of the best books he has written! Full of action, it also gives you the setting for the next two books - read this one first! It's an incredible introduction for a new reader of R. A. Salvatore, a must read for any fan of his.
Rating: Summary: This book got me started reading Bob's works Review: I had never read any of the Realms books before reading Crystal Shard (I read it when it first came onto paperback years ago, but never had the chance to review it until now), althought I was an avid D&D adventurer. This book got me started reading Realms, and I have read many since. I love Bob's writing, and though this was not his first published work, I think it was his debut for a lot of R.A. Salvatore fans. The book is an excellant introduction to Drizzt,Wulfgar, Cati-brie, Bruenor and Regis, as well as the Realms themselves. Bob's writing takes you into the story itself, letting you get "up close and personal" with many of his characters. I found the story interesting and attention holding to the end. I was so happy when I found that not only did Bob write more in the Dark Elf series, but went on to others as well. Bob, if you read this, thank you!
Rating: Summary: I would have loved this series as a teen! Review: I would have loved this book as a teen, for adults though its a bit marginal. I didn't think the characters were very interesting, at least not the way they were portrayed. The combat scenes also seemed silly in lots of places, I mean these guys aren't just fantasy heroes, they are superheroes right up there with superman, the hulk, etc... Don't get me wrong, I like the superhero genre, I just think its a different genre then fantasy, even high fantasy. It also tends to get old hearing how awesomely unbeatable certain heroes of the book are, then see them get in a fight and yep, sure enough, the bad guys didn't stand a chance. I normally like to see my heroes challenged a bit more than that. Bottomline, if you are going to read it to see what all the fuss is about and you aren't a teenage boy then I'd say don't. Lastly, for those criticizing R.A. for stealing from tolkein, don't blame him, most of the stuff complained about is hardwired into the AD&D game and forgotten realms setting, which were pretty much based on tolkein's world in the first place.
Rating: Summary: This was Great!!!! Review: I started with The Legasy , then I read The Dark Elf Trilogy now I'm on The Halfling's Gem. I've never read an author that captivated the mind so well. I hope he doesn't stop writing any time soon

Rating: Summary: Fast paced fantasy adventure Review: While 'The Crystal Shard' is not likely to go down in history among the ranks of 'The Fellowship of the Ring' or 'A Wizard of Earthsea,' it will be remembered as one of the better TSR novels out there. It will also be remembered as a fun, if light, read.In contrast to his later novels, were only the smallest fraction of a plot carries the book, 'The Crystal Shard' actually has enough story to carry several books. Rather than stretch things out, however, Salvatore bangs his way through things, moving the plot along at a rapid pace. While this is at times rather unsatisfying, in the end it compliments the rather juvenile writing style quite nicely. The story never lets up enough for you to realize that you are reading a book written towards 13 years olds...and that is a *good* thing. All in all, this was a very fun book to read, packing a trilogies worth of action and adventure into one novel. One of the better rainy Saturday afternoon fantasy novels you'll find out there.
Rating: Summary: This book restored my faith in Forgotten Realms-based books Review: This book was not my first Realms book that I read. I first read the Avatar trilogy, and I really didn't want to ever read another Realms-based book again, after that. Someone bought The Crystal Shard, and I read it on a trip. After that, I decided to give the Realms books another shot, and was pleasantly surprised.
