Sisko's brush with a mysterious race of invisible phased matter aliens, on the other hand, is slow and talky. The pace picks up again as Janeway describes her experiences as a deck hand aboard the ship of a comparatively low-tech culture where, marooned, she has to work her way up from the bottom. Peter David's creation, Mackenzie Calhoun, relates his experiences as First Officer of the Grissom under the vengeful Captain Kenyon, and Christopher Pike searches for the origins of a species of spacefaring whales.
