Rating: Summary: Detailed, understandable, and entertaining Review: If you're any kind of Star Wars fan, this book is a real treasure. Not only does it give complete, concise knowledge of just about anything Star Wars imaginable, it also supplies plenty of full color pictures and photos which add plenty of color. The writing style of the author is serious and detailed, but also fun, so even a heavy reference book like this doesn't get dull. The entries include everything from short bios of the main characters of the saga (Luke, Han, Leia, Mara etc...) to things like the names of the toys Jacen and Jaina played with when they were babies. It's expensive, but trust me, it's well worth the money. The downside? It's also extremely outdated. Nothing from at least the last five years of Star Wars chronology is included. Not the New Jedi Order, certainly not any of the events from Specter or Vision. Even so, the amount of knowledge this book offers is would be more than essential to any hard core Star Wars fan, despite it's rather dated approach.
Rating: Summary: A truly excellent encyclopedia Review: This encyclopedia is truly quite excellent, with lots of great illustrations. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that it's no longer up to date, a problem inherent with these kind of books
Rating: Summary: A good fan reference, but not a fanatic one Review: I have an interesting experience. I bought the Star Wars Encyclopedia at the same time as the Star Trek Encyclopedia. Unfortunately, the latter quite simply spoiled me, and put the Star Wars Encyclopedia in a somewhat worse light. As an encyclopedia, this book performs all its roles very adequately. There are tons of references both famous and obscure, with a good selection of pictures in tow. This makes the book a useful and solid reference. But not much more. I say this in relation to the ST Encyclopedia. The latter not only describes factual information for various entries, but includes editorial comments, cross references, and even more loads of diagrams, pictures, plans and multi-page charts and lists. The Star Wars Encyclopedia does not. Allow me to admit that it is not entirely fair for me to compare the two; however, I cannot help but feel that the ST Encyclopedia demonstrates what more could have been done to make the SW Encyclopedia worth 5 stars. For example, I love the spacecraft in both these legendary worlds. The SW Encyclopedia is content to show single shots taken from the films, or colour (ink?) drawings in comic-style. The ST Encyclopedia, on the other hand, uses more formal top/side views for many of its vehicle illustrations, which is much more "encyclopedic" and satisfying, if you get what I mean. It's just that - this book comes across as a "fan" book, but just not a "fanatic's" bible. In short, I found the Star Wars Encyclopedia a good reference book, but one which I would only open up when I need to find some specific information. On the other hand, a really fanatically good encyclopedia sits beside me all the time, because I even enjoy flipping through it randomly. Such is not the case with this book.
Rating: Summary: Deserves 6 Stars! Review: An amazing compilation, filled with expertly detailed information and a hefty, beautiful book for the shelf or the coffee table. My 13-year old sold was so thrilled when we gave it to him for Christmas. Somehow Dad is reading it more than he is. We sure hope there will be an updated version of it after Episode III comes out. This is a must-own for any SW or movie fan.
Rating: Summary: very good Review: I thought this encyclopedia was a very well written and informative. Its easy to just look up a character, vehicle, droid, etc and read about it. HOwever, it needs to be updated, since, for example, Mara Jade is still Mara Jade and not MJ Skywalker. I'd also like to see Episode 1 characters in it, too. I hope Sansweet is able to update it, because I'll definitely buy it.
Rating: Summary: This book lacks a couple of special qualities Review: This book lacks a couple of necessary qualities that make a good encyclopedia. I believe if the author could have added some decent qualities. Some key characteristics could have made this book better for two reasons. I fell asleep reading it and you can ask my Girlfriend that. I had a blast throwing it out of my house as it kinda stunk pretty bad. I hope this review helps you in choosing the correct books.
Rating: Summary: Contents is Great... Review: In Depth, interesting and accurate as the other reviews say but a shame about the foolish mistake on the front cover. Every Star Wars fan knows what color light sabers Luke and Darth should have, but they still got it wrong. I suppose it doesn't matter really but still...
Rating: Summary: The Best Review: If you want to have any comprehension of the Star Wars universe then you need this book. It has every thing from characters to star fighters. I hope they will come up with an updated version that includes Episode 1, 2, 3. This book is full of information that isn't matched by any one book. It is a must buy.
Rating: Summary: Everything you need to know about the Star Wars Universe Review: Star Wars guru Steve Sansweet has done it again. After 18 grueling months of research and editing, the consumate book for Star Wars fans old and new is here, the Star Wars Encyclopedia. The Bible for force wielders and new fans is an essential reference that many Bothan spies died for. This astounding reference material contains the most amazing body of knowledge that spans the various comics, video games, sourcebooks, novels and most especially the movies, that are essential to rebels and imperials alike. All in all, a definite fun read. I only wish Mr. Sansweet would follow this up with a volume that covers the events revealed in Episode 1, and the upcoming Episodes 2 and 3.
Rating: Summary: Instant Approval Review: I have been a fan of Star Wars for many years, and upon hearing about the Star Wars: Encyclopedia, I knew I had to have it. I had it only a day, and was amazed at all it had in it. I give it two thumbs up. It's that good. If you are a die-hard Star Wars fan this is a must have! This book is in-depth and full of information about things that I didn't even know exsisted in the Star Wars universe. It includes extremely detailed information, about ships, droids, planets, and every character you can think of. This book will tell about a characters life history, even if he only had one small appearence in a limited edition comic book. To make a long review short. BUY THIS BOOK! IT'S UNBELIEVABLE! And buy it from Amazon.com, because they have the best price I've seen yet!
