Rating: Summary: Good story, unexciting prose Review: As I liked this book and the story, I couldn't past how the prose seemed written at a 3rd grade level. I almost felt insulted by how simple the book read. Besides that it was a good book.
Rating: Summary: I liked the background. Review: Considering that B5 is a series that thrives on continuity, this was a great effort. I enjoyed reading the details behind stories we'd heard here and there in the series - just *why* Sheridan forgot to say 'I love you' the last time he spoke to Anna, exactly *how* Morden became a Shadow servant.I really enjoyed the 'B' plot, telling of the problems Sheridan had when he first took command of the Agamemnon. We begin to see what it must have been like for him to have to leave her behind - in short, it gives us a lot of insight into who he is. I did find myself expecting things that didn't turn up, though...for example, the writing on the side of the 'Egg': 'What is desired', sounded so much to my like 'What do you want', but the characters then went off on a tangent about 'all that is desired', leaving me feeling a little unfulfilled. In short, a great book, with a great plot and a wonderful feel for the series, that's only let down occasionally by the style of writing. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: superb: babylon 5 at it's best Review: for all of us babylon 5 fans who are itching for some new material now that the show is off the air, this is a great book. the book picks up the story of john sheridan's command on the agamenon and all the problems he faced with the crew. all of this takes place right before the dedication of babylon 5 and there is enough subplots to keep readers interested. meanwhile his wife anna has been assigned as the science officer aboard the icarus right when her and john are supposed to go on their honeymoon. but how can she possibly turn down the opportuninty of a lifetime. her faithful decision is the basis of most of the tv series and i think the writer did a beautiful job on describing details that the tv show really did not go into. this is a must book for anyone like me who watched all 5 seasons and was sad to see it leave the air.
Rating: Summary: Asome story about what really happened to Sheriden's wife. Review: I have read most of the books in the Babylon 5 series, and can say that this book is right now my favorite because you find out what happened to Sheriden's wife, and the mystery that leads up to the awakening of the Shadows on Z'ardom. The characters are not just steriotypes, but are full of life. You discover the dark secret of Morden, and why he came to the aid of the Shadows. Over all this is one of the best SciFi novels that I have read with a female hero, or Shero, as some prefer. A good suspensful novel.
Rating: Summary: A must read for any serious B5 fan.. Review: I have watched all of the Babylon 5 episodes, collected most of videos, and even started reading the comics when they first came out. Now I am working on the books. I just wanted to point out that this book is a must for all serious B5 fans. The TV series leaves you lacking in what happened to the Icarus when it reached Z'Ha'dum and this book clearly gives those answers. I also appreciated the author's look into the past life of the character Morden. It is nice to see that his life was very different from that which he leads in the TV series. The book was well written and kept me entertained throughout. Kudos to the author...
Rating: Summary: Masterpiece of lame spin-off series Review: I know that it ruins a story if you know how it ends,in this case, what happens to Anna Sheridan on Z'ha'dum, but you probably wouldn't have gotten the book unless you did. But for the Shadow Within, it is not what happens that matters, but how and why they did. You see, this book explains how the ancient Shadows were awakened, as mentioned in the television series, and why Mr. Morden came to be in their service. The story is greatly inhanced by the dramatic irony that is always present with Morden. He gives a fresh air to the story. This is a very well crafted story, which gets the reader out of the crampt five mile long station everyone has come to love. It explores the B5 universe. Other books in the series are dry, dull stories that sound like rejects from the first season.(Except Jim Mortimore's book: Clark's Law) Many familar characters are in it, including: Delenn, Sinclair, Kosh, and even the lovable Garibaldi. Let's not forget the Sheridans, whose marriage will be torn apart by the shadows within.
Rating: Summary: An excellent read. Review: I read "The Shadow Within" with some trepidation since I was afraid that my views of the events would be clouded by my opinions of the characters in the "current" timeline. Instead I found myself forgetting about the fate of the characters and focusing on the events of the story. The insight into Morden and Sheridan was particularly nice and I liked the references to some of the other characters in the past. I am difficult to please when it comes to novels of ST shows because often the quality of the novel is less than the quality of the show or characters don't feel right, but "The Shadow Within" was an excellent read.
Rating: Summary: Best of the series so far. Review: I started reading this novel with only one expectation: That it will be the best of the 7 books so far. I was right. For the last few years, we have wondered what happened to awaken the Shadows, and who survived among the crew of the Icarus. Well this book answered it. This book had more to it then met the eye. It showed the difficulties some EarthForce captains had to go through when they got a new ship, that already had a full crew. It has shown more about Z'ha'Dum then we would ever learn in the series. But on to the main plotline.
Again, a wonderful surprise. There was alot of places for the readers to guess in the series. And most would guess right, but not for the right reason. The author wrote the book just like the series is written: with surprises we could never expect. Morden came off as likable. Even tho the back of the book and definitely the series suggest otherwise. I am rating this book as a 9. because even tho it is the best in the series. It isn't the BEST writing I have read. But very close to it. The writing while enjoyable, was a bit to the point. There was detail, but not the greatest. But all in all, If you are a fan of the television series, or good Sci-Fi, This is a book to read.
Rating: Summary: Calluses Review: I was hoping this book would be as good at the passing of the techno-mages had been, but it wasn't. It didn't have the same drive or passion that the other books had. The ending was a letdown primarily because we know how it ends, and nothing new or dramatic was offered at the end. In the techno-mage series we see a fantastic ending that encompasses the series as well and that is what I had hoped for here. I'm also very picky about redundancy in books. This one talks about the calluses on the hands of some of the characters to the point of being silly, and was very distracting. Overall it is ok, nothing special, but not terrible either.
