Rating: Summary: Something is missing Review: One cannot argue about the depth and splendor of this volume. However, it is a much better read than a reference book: buyers should be aware that it has NO index of any kind. A list of episodes substitutes for a table of contents, but nice indexes such as those contained in the TNG Companion (Nemecek) are absent. This is an inexcusable shortcut in these days of advanced word processing.
Rating: Summary: Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Companion Review: The crew of DS9 is now known as a legendary crew and the title and the way the author wrote this book is a very good book. Lots of action, battles and more are really good subjects in this book. This in the ultimite book of DS9 ever!
Rating: Summary: A doorstop of a book! Review: The DS9 companion is filled with interesting trivia, plot synposis of every single episode and a lot of great illustrations. There are some drawbacks, however, to this very good book. The background material stays (not surprising give it's an offical companion)polite. The drawbacks to the book aren't surprising given the fact that it's an "offical" companion to the series. There's a surprising amount of facile critical commentary about various episodes. While I wasn't expecting an indepth analysis, I was expecting a bit more observation as to why certain episodes worked and others didn't. It would have been much more interesting to have individual cast members comment indepth about each individual episode. There is an attempt to do that but it's too little. The paper is surprisingly thin with some photos and text poorly reproduced. Perhaps this has to do with the quality of the printing or the paper, I'm not really sure which. It also wouldn't have hurt to occasionally use color photos. What's great about the book, though, is how complete it is in covering everything from the acting to the post production effects. The information provided does outweigh the disadvantages of the printing and binding. Don't get me wrong, the DS9 Companion is much appreciated. I found the series to be the most compelling of the Trek show produced. It's nice to have this around as I have a hard time remembering which episode showcased a particular actor or had this or that plot. The symposis of the episodes provide enough meat so that those who might have missed easly episodes can jump right in as well. It easily rivaled Babylon 5 for complexity of plot, conflict and an examination of both spiritual and politics never seen in a Trek series before or since. DS9 had the advantage of the Trek universe as a background but, really, it could have just as easily been outside Trek and been as successful in terms of the quality of the program.
Rating: Summary: The best DS9 book ever written Review: The exaustive coverage in this book is a must for those who followed the show. To me DS9 is the most realistic in terms of characters. Not everyone got along in this show. Kira had a very good reason to hold the Cardassians with contempt. It was good to see a vision of Star Trek that had action and aliens that were not all too trustworthy. More than any of the others; this series embodied all the values of Trek. The book has set designs and drawings never seen before. Most of all; it tells the reader valuable production information of what happened behind the scenes.
Rating: Summary: The Cronicle Of Station Deep Space 9 Review: The official guide to Star Trek Deep Space 9 is without question the best campanion to any of the Trek series wriitten to date. The fact that author Terry J. Erdmann was given the task of putting the book together as the series began. through to its conclusion, gives him unique perspectives that no one else had. This in turn, makes for a more in depth look at how the show worked. Usually most "official" books written about the Trek franchise, barely touch on any of the backstage stuff that goes on, as the recently updated TNG guide illustrates. Have no fear though, the text is not presented in a "gossipy" fashion. The feelings expressed in the interviews, by those involved, merely give readers a true sense of what it takes to make a show like DS9. The book gives very detailed information on the creation of the series, an overview of each season, and episode synopses and trivia Erdmann was helped along by Paula M. Block, who aided in the organization of all the information. The book covers all aspects of the show. I would guess that, no staffer working on those stages from 93-99 wasn't at some point, interviewed for the book. Aside from reading about my favorite episodes, the other highlights of the book include: The events surrounding the addition of Michael Dorn (Worf from TNG) to the cast, the departure of actress Terry Farrell after year 6, and the emotional last day of filmming, to name a few. Everything comes together nicely and no stone is left unturned There are also dozens and dozens of black and white photos peppered thoughout. In the end the book is a treat for both fan/non fan alike. It is well researched, and written in such a way, so that even folks who missed out initially on the series can enjoy it. I just wish that the latest edition of the TNG Companion, had as much care put into it, as this book did. This highly recommended book has 725 pages and includes an apendix/index
Rating: Summary: A dream come true for the DS9 fan! Review: This amazing book is an absolute must-have for the hardcore fan of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine... if you are like me and savored every episode over all seven seasons, you will appreciate the author's in-depth coverage, behind-the-scenes info on every episode, and his obvious affection for the show. This book is over 700 pages and filled with new photos & illustrations I have never seen anywhere else, including really nifty things like production drawings, some hilarious props, and even a map of Bajor. The many interviews with the cast & creators alone are worth the price. If hearing "The Way You Look Tonight" makes you misty, buy this book!
Rating: Summary: Flat-out amazing Review: This is an amazing book. Many books about television shows resort to covering a show with a few pages of synopses and a few pages of "behind-the-scenes" items per each season of the show, simply because they don't have the access to details about each show as an individual unit. I was content with those types of renderings because it seemed like too much to ask that an author would follow a show throughout its run and keep notes on the process the whole way through. Surely, by the time a show was established enough to justify writing a Companion, the early years would be long forgotten. Thankfully, though, DS9 is Star Trek, and Star Trek is very fond of merchandising, and Erdmann apparently was asked to follow this show from before day one with the aim of someday publishing this book -- an audacious move for people who couldn't be certain that the product would even be worth writing about, to be sure, but as it was, it's an investment that paid off magnificently. Erdmann's amazing level of access to writers, actors, producers and directors led to this book having *at least* a page of notes, insights, and behind-the-scenes trivia for *every single episode* of the show, from the epic to the embarrassing. He has behind-the-scenes anecdotes I've never heard before and trivia points I've never noticed (both great feats in the eyes of a Trekker), and at the same time, he somehow avoids repeating everything that's been said about DS9 before. No Trek book out there comes close to this level of detail. Despite its careful detailing of every episode of the show, this is no work of soggy platitudes. The behind-the-scenes comments are refreshingly frank. Writers take full responsibility for the occasional misstep. Actors talk candidly about what worked and what didn't, what they pushed for and how they viewed their characters. From reading the actors' insights into their *own* characters, you get the sense that this show was much more than a steady job for them, just as this show was more than a TV show for so many of us Trek freaks. I've enjoyed reading this densely packed book and revisiting my favorite moments in my memory, which has made me realize how much I really do miss DS9. The book has refreshed my memory and added bulk to my perception of the show's path. Great read.

Rating: Summary: Detailed and Behind-the-Scenes Information on Every Episode Review: This is the comprehensive guide for the entire run of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," featuring cast and crew information, summaries and a detailed analysis of every episode. Also included each episode are a few pictures from the episode itself. My favorite part is the behind-the-scenes information revealed by the cast and crew. You learn the intentions and thoughts of the actors and many of the people working on the show. This enhances the enjoyment of the show as you understand what they liked, what they thought they could have improved and what points they were trying to make with certain things. Also of great interest is the additional information spread throughout, analyzing particular aspects from the show or the season as a whole. Even if you don't consider yourself a "trekkie" and maybe more of a casual viewer, you'll definitely find something to interest you in this guide to the show.
