Rating: Summary: Excellent "documentary" in book form.... Review: This volume is an extensively illustrated "making of" presentation. The book begins by discussing Tolkien's work, Peter Jackson's background, and the process by which Lord of the Rings came to be filmed as three live-action movies. Next, each of the main actors is profiled along with the character they will be portraying. Special effects, props, languanges, and the sheer logistics of filming three motion pictures simultaneously are covered in some detail. This volume would be a wonderful companion to the "making of" DVD that is being produced. This book, along with the visual companion, make an excellent reference source for the Fellowship of the Ring.
Rating: Summary: Very pretty, but not exceptionally informative. Review: This was fabulous to have before "Fellowship of the Ring" came out, but it was really just an appetite-whetter. It's got very pretty pictures and some good interviews, but there isn't anything here you wouldn't have seen already from the six gazillion "making of" shows floating around on cable just before the movie premiered. There's no real depth to it at all; it isn't even very thick. That said, it really *is* very pretty, with lots of nice pictures and decent writing. I don't regret getting it, but would I have bought it after seeing all the "making of" shows and seeing the movie itself? Very doubtful.
Rating: Summary: As beautiful as Rivendell... Review: Well, maybe not that beautiful, but... this is a really wonderful book for anyone who's a fan of the trilogy or movie. I've got two copies--one to keep safe, the other to drool...I mean look at! I'm a huge fan of the movie, and looking at this book helps bring the movie to life again. The book has exquisite photos, not to mention bios on the entire cast, and a bit about the making of the movie. Definitely get it if you're a fan! You won't be disappointed!
