Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: The Downfall of TSR/WTOC Review: The new PHB does shame to those who started with first edition and those who moved onto 2nd Edition. This book, which I'll call 2nd Edition Revised, adds into AD&D a skill based system and simplifies spell descriptions. The later do this book harm. The least specific a spell description is the more problems this causes for players and DMs to make rulings in a game. So this is a severely negative trait of this book. The skill based system, which I once called weapon and non-weapon proficiences, turns this game into something that it is not. That is, the game tries to add depth to character development, but only suceeds into making characters less playable. Another negative trait of this book is the extremely large print. Of course, if you complain about the lack of material, TSR/WOTC would say that there wasn't enough space. Well, maybe they should learn to type with smaller fonts. When paying for a book, you hope to get the most for your money. This books fails terribly. Thus, requiring a new player to purchase several other books to make this game playable. In conclusion, this book is suggestive of the direction TSR/WOTC wishes to take their game systems. That is, they wish to target the younger audiences and say heck with those who started with AD&D 1st Edition. And their current catalog reflects this by saying the games are for ages 10-12. What happened to the good old days where game companies like TSR respected their players?
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Not perfect, but god damn good enough! Review: Excellent book for new DM's and expierenced alike! I feel that Zeb and crew kicked ass this time around. I feel that all the D&D rule books -Advanced, Basic, and the original- were excelent in their times and still are; as long as its played for fun. So, keep the imagination!

The only problem is they don't have a good small quick reference that covers everything except the fundamentals (a.k.a. combat, spells, tables, etc.) Otherwise, it is the best reference I've ever read.

Review: I approached the new books with great scepticism, viewing them as yet another method to "churn" some new business. I'm happy to say though that the editorial standards (such as consistency, adherence to standard style etc.) as well as overall improved layout are really worthwhile. If your old books are losing pages etc., or if you do have the extra cash, it's not at all a bad investment

The new revised and up-to-date Player's Handbook is better than ever! It was written and set up extraordinarily well. It's the easiest to use (not to mention the best) reference for anyone who plays AD&D. I strongly recommend it to players and DMs. It cuts back on hours of dull playing time, while giving you the information you need at a glance. Rookie players find that the Player's Guide is the first and only book they need. Unfortunately, I do not have a copy yet, but it's the next book on my shopping list. Get your copy of the new Player's Guide ASAP!

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Overall I thought the book had extremely good information. Review: The book had the best layout I have seen in any of the AD&D books yet. The rules and optional rules were set up phenominally well and were easy to reference. I have been playind AD&D for 4 years now and the is the best work I have seen done. It made my friends and my playing time much more enjoyable. The layout sped up play an amazing amount making battles and normal everyday encounters easy to reference, so there wasn't dull time during play looking up simple answers that players had just forgotten. I play AD&D about once a week and since I received this book I have come to enjoy the game even mor than when I first started
