Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Skipped 2nd Edition - But Bought 3rd Review: Amazing! I've been Dungeon Mastering since 1979 but my group skipped the 2nd edition rules and kept playing with AD&D rules -- the 2nd edition was too complex and just not fun to play. But all that has changed and I've started a 3rd edition campaign with my friends. Third edition rules are easier to play than the AD&D or 2nd Edition and yet provides a richer and more realistic play environment. Multi-class rules are much improved and the addition of skills and feats make characters seem more like individuals (without the complexity of something like Gurps). Character classes are more balanced, especially at lower levels where balance really matters. 3rd Edition plays really well. There are no needs for huge tables and nothing gets in the way. The hardest part of DMing was always figuring out what characters needed to roll to hit or save or succeed for everything -- now I just tell people what they need to roll and add modifiers on the fly. The biggest change I've noticed so far I've only needed to add a couple of house rules to fix problems or speed things up. My play group contains people who have a lot of wilderness, archery, fencing and kendo experience so usually I'm adding dozens of house rules to make things realistic (there's nothing worse than your 2nd level ranger not being able to do something that you, yourself, can :-) I recommend this to anybody who has played and enjoyed any of the previous version of D&D!
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Its still the same tired rule set Review: under the gloss of the 3rd edition, its still the same tired, illogical rules. The original edition of the advanced rule set was much less complicated and did not pretend to reflect the complexities of reality. It was geared towards a cooperative group. This rul set seems to focus on the idea of the uber-character. They have taken the whole concept of classes about as far as it can. The combat mechanics are still extremely limited - the AC system is probably the worst armor system published for a role playing game. However, i do have to say that given the confines of the system itself, its pretty impressive. They have really pushed the system far beyond where it started, and it has come through it all more flexible than i would have originally guessed.

This is certainly the only edition of Dungeons and Dragons we will play for the foreseeable future. It's mechanics are flawless (mostly) and it's writing style is great. I can't recomment 3rd Edition highly enough.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Advanced AD&D ! Wonderful Sourcebook / Character Generator Review: Dungeons & Dragons, 3rd edition, is Fantastic !!! I have devoured the new Character Stats, Combat, et al features, then compared them to my 2nd ed. books. I absolutely Love the Rogue possibilities. This new ed. AD&D is very comprehensive, and much easier to play, than the old version. I am retiring my 2nd ed. material, in favor of the beautiful, artistic, well-crafted, perfectly thought-out 3rd edition. I am fascinated with the Forgotten Realms and the "Prestige Classes" / Alternative races (!!!!!) you can find in "Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting" (A Forgotten Realms(r) Campaign) by Ed Greenwood, Skip Williams, Sean K Reynolds, Rob Heinsoo (ISBN: 0786918365) -- which is a Perfect Companion to the "Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition Player's Handbook (With CD-Rom)" The Character Generator (CD-ROM) is Excellent for quick character Creation--esp., if your character gets dusted by a Two-Headed Giant or a Mind Flayer--however, make sure that you use the Web-Access feature to download Patches and Updates for the Character Generator, then double-check the Player's Handbook. Also, I discovered numerous Bonus Character Stats that you will only know about if you read the Player's Handbook. Take care to use the Handbook while charting your equipment, as well--or, you might miss out on a +2 Bonus to your Lock-picking rolls ! The Player's Handbook is very, very well-made and the information is Indexed for quick info-gathering during play (getting started). I am much more impressed with 3rd edition--esp., after many years of not using my old 2nd ed. material. You just need to see this book to understand how much better the system is explained and how well the system works. You still need to be an egghead to play, but not necessarily a member of Mensa Seriously, you will love the easy, concise, updated version and it is definitely worth Updating your collection to use the Forgotten Realms setting! To be honest, I had given-up on D&D, until I was introduced to the 3rd ed. and the Forgotten Realms. Now, I am getting involved again and loving every minute of it. I cannot say enough good things about this new & improved gaming system. If you think you have seen it all..... Start Over, with 3rd Edition !

Player characters have been made more powerful with changes such as the ability to raise ability scores with level advancement, new special abilities, and the removal of level limits for demi humans. Also changed is the limitation on hit dice. You continue to gain hit dice even above 9th level. Play the game that inspired me to write books!
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: I WANT MY TACHO BACK Review: The one thing about this very well done book that i didn't like was the meovel of the old armor class system. I only started palying AD&D 3 years ago and the and after i finaly get the hang of THACO they have to change it on me. well that's me stand on it
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Good Review: I think the 3rd D&D is the best. The only problem i had with the book was there was not enough prestige classes. Other than that it is a really good book.
