Well in 1990 TSR who owned the rights to the game (now owned by wotc)made a 2nd edition. It was a little better then the first edition, but still not crisp and clean. So 2 years ago they decided to write up a 3rd edition. They took out a lot of stuff and put thousands of play testing hours to make 3rd edition Dungeons and Dragons the best Adventure Game around.GAMING IS LIFE, the rest are just die rolls!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Incredible update! Review: I had my reservations about a new edition (especially after playing DnD 2 for the better part of 12 years), but this is just a fantastic piece of work. Take the best from DnD 2nd edition and combine it with some of the best parts of other roleplaying systems, and you have the new third edition. Game play is smoother, characters are more realistic, and any detail you want to look up can be found. No more negative numbers, or ThAC0 tables. No remembering if you need to roll "high or low". Feats and Skills really allow each player to individualize their own character. Racial advantages give the players something to think about. Each class also comes with a starting kit, so if you are a new player, you have a great idea of what the class is about. They have also taken out the "you are not allowed" rules and replaced them with "you can, but there is a stiff penalty". I'm still not sure about wizards using weapons and armor (there is a chance of spell failure), but outside of that it is a wonderful edition. Highly recommeneded! If you're not sure yet, give me an e-mail with your worries and i'll let you know what's up :)
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A better game then before Review: An excellent make over of the original players rules for the game. I found it detailed and understandable. More so than the older second edition rule book. A good buy for someone who is tired of second edition, and even necessary for those who wish to continue the game. More user friendly than the last book, it is a good thing it came out when it did. Third edition boasts a simpler combat system, and even some new character types. A good bye for anyone who likes the game or even wants to get into the game.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: A difficult and rushed manual Review: I just got done reviewing the changes from 2nd to 3rd edition, and although it is a very concise manual, I found many things that not only lacked improvement but also made the age old game even more confusing. I had hoped that this edition would both simplify the overwhelming conglomeration of additional 2nd edition rules (that came into play as soon as WOTC introduced the 'black covered' books), as well as enlighten new players to the exciting tradition of table top roleplaying. What I found instead was, in my opinion, a rather poorly organized and rushed reliese of a book that will most likely be severely changed by all the 'new' and 'additional' rule books that I know will inevitably follow. I think that the people of WOTC should have considered the new generation of roleplayers about to be introduced into the game, as it didn't seem they did so with this book. For those of you that love a system that will constantly be improving upon istelf and reliesing new products for the public to waste more money on, this 'new and improved' manual is for you. On the other hand, if you are like me and enjoy something with a little more simplicity and ease of learning, I suggest you buy up all the core books for 2nd edition you can find while they are still left. <jp-quin@lycos.com>

But for me it is a new step forward into a new bright future of roleplaying. I recommend this game for all "old" and "young" gamers worldwide. Just get it and play ;)
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Dungeons and Dragons Reborn Review: As a D&D fan the new 3rd Edition has been something long in the making, and heavily anticipated by many fans. Well, the anticipation is over. The long wait has been worth it however and this book established the first of the three cornerstone core rules books for 3rd edition along with The Dungeon Masters Guide and the Monstrous Manual. Dungeons and Dragons has undergone major revisions and changes from the previous editions and to a degree will have to be learned over again. The changes are well worth learning however and the game system is greatly streamlined and simplified, while at the same time increasing flexibility and playability. The new mechanics are needed updates and should be loved by all fans of the old game. The book itself is gorgeous, inside and out. The graphics are amazing and the book is a visual gift to the eyes. The layered graphics keep every page interesting visually, and the overall format is much cleaner and easier to understand. The text is clear and very readable. It's a great book just to flip through the pages, and the amount of work put into it makes it a real value for the money. The bottom line is that classic D&D gamers will love it, and even casual fans will be able to enjoy this great reference guide to the worlds of Dungeons and Dragons.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: It's Like Falling in Love All Over Again . . . Review: You know that feeling when, one day, you look at your wife and something about the way she's sitting reminds you of a time once upon a time when you first fell in love with her and suddenly you realize that you love her just as much if not more? Being single, I have no idea what that's like but I suspect that's not quite unlike the feeling I got when I pored into the new DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS 3rd EDITION PLAYER'S HANDBOOK. To use understatement, I liked it. A lot. First off, though the new rules still smack of the older editions that old school gamers like myself loved, they now make sense. Everything is consistent. The same dice mechanic works for all the rolls (as opposed to the myriad exceptions that plagued the older versions). To-hit rolls are no longer the math crunching chore of old (in the new system, the Armor Class in the number you need to roll to hit). Saving throws are cut down to three (Reflex, Fortitude, and Will) and are more easily applied. Besides making life easier for veteran roleplayers, the new streamlined rules will make novices more eager (and less daunted) to try D&D out. Second, character classes just work better. The older editions were notable in how classes were very much defined in what they *couldn't* do (a magic user can't use swords, a barbarian can't use magic, no one who wasn't a thief could move silently or hide in shadows). Here, no such stigma pervades the system. Yes there are limitations, but none like the stifling straitjackets of old. Also, with the new skill system and feats (abilities that aren't skills that characters can perform like Two Weapon Fighting for fighters and Silent Spell for wizards and sorcerers), it is much easier to customize. Two players may play the same class, but they certainly won't be playing the same character. Also the return of old favorites (the monk and barbarian) as well as the introduction of a new class (the sorcerer) is just cool. Lastly, the book is downright beautiful to look at. The text is easy to read and the art is lush. The pictures may be somewhat jarring for those who grew up on Larry Elmore's or Clyde Caldwell's artwork, but in my opinion, this art works better. The previous editions, though a fantasy RPG, were still grounded firmly in Medieval realism. This book realizes that D&D is *fantasy* and should not be so hidebound attached to Earth realism. The art, I feel, reflects this. All in all, this is a great product. I can't wait for the new DUNGEON MASTER'S GUIDE and MONSTER MANUAL!
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Third Edition has players saying " HMMMMMMMMM" Review: After the long wait for the new D&D third edition to arrive many players out there are saying "HMMMMMMMMMMMM." I must say the reworking of the game has some definate cool ideas and other areas leave me saying "why change that?" All in all the new Players Handbook is an atractive new edition to this classic roleplaying game. The art within is great and the price is right. I am looking forward to the new Dungeon Masters Guide which is needed before casting full judgement on this newly revamped RPG system.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition Player's Handbook Review: Around my area, if you said you played Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, you got alot of scoffing and smirts. The grandfather of all roleplaying games didn't get any respect like it was some senile old buzzard. Well it seems that Wizards of the Coast has found the Fountain of Youth and gave the game brand new masterwork sword. This game has been resurrected and brought back into the Gaming Arena and is kicking butt and taking names. This book is a worthy find and just kicked the crap out its competators. Congratz WotC. This is the best product I've purchased in a long time.
