Summary: Neither Blasphemy Nor Shakespeare - just funny
Review: Okay, if you believe that certain works of art are sacred and that basing a parody on the Lord of the Rings is a sacrilege punishable by eternal damnation, then you're not going to like this book. One wonders why you would even take the time to read it, let alone review it. [And a couple of reviewers need to look up the definitions of "parody" and "satire" before complaining that this isn't Swift or James Joyce. Sheesh!]

I first read "Bored of the Rings" more than 20 years ago (in high school) and I thought it was hilarious, one long belly laugh after another. At the time, I could quite easily have given it 5 stars. And one of the reasons it deserved such high marks is because it was clear that the authors loved the work they were skewering as much as I did!

Now, however, it's got a lot to overcome. "Bored" was written some 30 years ago by a couple of guys who would go on to start National Lampoon. If you find the "National Lampoon" movies to be way too sophomoric or insufficiently subtle - well, this book is NOT subtle - this may not be your cup of grog. And if your experience of LOTR consists of seeing the movie rather than reading the books, you'll miss a lot. It's also dated, sometimes badly so. The political references will be completely lost on anyone under 25 and will seem remote to many who are older than that.

But, here's the thing, despite all that IT'S STILL FUNNY! My 10 year old insisted on reading it because boring old dad kept chuckling over the misadventures of the boggies (who eerily resemble certain in-laws).

I'd love to see the National Lampoon guys do an update on this. Perhaps they could call it "Bored of the Rings: The Rerun of the Thing".

Summary: Hilarious
Review: You can't go wrong, unless you don't have a sense of humor.

Quick story, I read LOTR as a child, and when I was in seventh grade, one of my friends gave me a copy of Bored of the Rings. I thought it was hilarious. I brought it to church and told the mother of a friend how funny it was. How the changed Frodo to Frito and Gandalf to GoodGulf and Bilbo to Dildo...

I didn't understand the humor with the last name change. Now I know why she looked so mortified. :-)

Review: THIS BOOK IS BETTER THAN ANY LORD OF THE RINGS BOOK.
IT HAS FUNNY SENTENCES SUCH AS, TOUCH ME!, OH TOUCH ME!!!
FRITO'S HAND REACHED OUT AND TRACED THE DELICATE SWELLING OF
HER ELF-BREAST WHILE THE OTHER SLOWLY CREPT AROUND HER TINY
FLAWLESS WAIST, CRUSHING HER TO HIS BARREL CHEST.

THE BOOK COVER THAT MADE ME LAUGH FOR A LOOOOOONG

Summary: Just Not Funny
Review: For the first 40 pages, Bored of the Rings was amusing. After that, it just became (ironically) tedious and repetitive. Yes, the names were clever, and the fantasy genre could stand to take itself a bit less seriously. But for me, it just didn't work. As a stand-up routine, it would be great, but a full-length book needs something more than [adult]-toy jokes to keep itself rolling...

Summary: LOTR Lovers Love this ,too!
Review: I read LOTR in 1965 and fell in love with it. I read "Bored of the Rings" two years later and laughed my head off. Great books make great parodies.

The Harvard Lampoon (and it's successor, the National Lampoon) was unquestionably one of the ablest parodists in English. But BOTR was inspired like nothing else they did.

It won't diminish your affection for Tolkien one bit; but it may seriously impair your ability to breath while reading it.

I've read both books again after 30 some odd years. Tolkien still moves me, and LOTR still makes my sides ache.

Summary: Bored of the Rings
Review: I loved "Bored of the Rings." A couple friends and I are Tolkien maniacs, and we all agree that this book was great. It followed and mocked the plot of LOTR very well. Whether or not you've read LOTR, you will like this book. It was witty, well-written, and made me laugh. "Bored of the Rings" is highly recommended!!!

Summary: Enjoy, enjoy!
Review: I read this book when it first came out, in 1969. I was in college then, and at the height of my Tolkien mania: I was even taking some lecture notes in Dwarvish runes. (I am not kidding.) This book seemed quite sacrilegious and I felt a little embarrassed for liking it.

But time passes, manias decline, and both LOTR and BOTR still sit on my shelf. The writing here is extremely clever and the satire is wickedly effective. You will laugh, and what's healthier than laughter?

I recommend you also get The Tough Guide to Fantasyland by Diana Wynne Jones to complement BOTR.

Summary: Absolutely Bleedin' Marvellous
Review: As soon as I saw the featureless area of the Bored of the Rings Map labelled "The Flat Mountains", I was hooked!

This achingly funny send-up of Lord of the Rings pokes merciless fun at a genre that perhaps takes itself a tad too seriously.

There is a laugh-out-loud moment on almost every page and, whilst the terminally humourless LOTR addicts will no doubt scream heresy, it merely made me appreciate the enduring qualities of Tolkien's masterpiece all the more.

I guarantee you will not regret buying this book!

Summary: Still Funny after all these years.
Review: I first read this tome as a tender lad in high school in the early 70's and it warped me (in a good way, of course). I picked it up after seeing the movie and re-reading the original and still can't stop laughing. I truly is a timeless masterpiece. Get it, curl up and laugh out loud.

Summary: SKIP THIS!
Review: SKIP THIS! This is obviously a very bad book. Most of the jokes aren't even funney, even if you've read the origanal book and understand all the jokes! I do NOT recomend this book escpecially if your a Tolkien fan!
