Rating: Summary: A must for any Bat-fan Review: A very nice, if pricey, set. The repro of the first Batman story is wonderfully reminiscent of those oversized reprints from the '70s -- but actually neater because it's the same size as the original. The abridged history of the caped crusader is a nice intro for anyone who doesn't own the other, more complete history book by Les Daniels (a highly recommended purchase, by the way). However, the best reason to get this is, of course, the 9-inch figure representing Bob Kane's original version of the Bat. Of all the Batman figures released over the years, this one has the best cape EVER! It's worthy of the ever-present billowing capes we've seen in the comics throughout the years -- it really can cloak the figure in darkness. COOL! As I say, though, the only drawback is the price for this set. Look for it on sale...

Rating: Summary: Les Daniels does it again! Review: Although still two weeks from hitting the market, the Batman Masterpiece Edition is a sure-fire hit not only for Batman enthusiasts, but also the general public interested in comic book history. Daniels has produced a wide variety of best selling hardcover comic history books, from Marvel Comics to 60 years of DC Comics, both excellent reads. The illustrations in all previous books are very interesting and nostalgic, but the best part about the Masterpiece Editions are the wonderful action figure reproductions. You won't find a replica of the original Bob Kane Batman anywhere else! Sign up for this book while you still can!

Rating: Summary: Very cool Review: I love these Masterpiece Editions! As with the "Superman Masterpiece Edition," this carries an exact replica of Batman #1, an abbreviated version of Les Daniels's "Batman : The Complete History," and an astounding mego-style 9" Batman figure. It's nice to see a reprint of Batman #1, as reprints of his first appearance, Detective #27 are far more common. I had never seen a full version before. As I do not buy Les Daniel's "Complete History" series I am happy to have the book. It will be redundant to someone who collects both. It is basically the Golden Age section. While the book and the comic reprint are great extras, the figure is the real reason to buy this set. He is perfect in detail and simply one of the most beautiful Batman toys I have seen. He fits in perfectly with the DC Silver Age 9" figure line. It comes with a Batarang and a poseable cape. (Interesting side note: The figure is Batman from his first appearance in Detective #27, and not the costume from the included comic, Batman #1) I highly recommend this set, and I hope that they continue the series with a "Wonder Woman Masterpiece Edition," and, dare I hope, a "Captain Marvel Masterpiece Edition."

Rating: Summary: Honoring the Golden Age of Batman (1939-1954) Review: In the wake of the success of Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns," which revived popularity in the character of Batman and resulted in four blockbuster movies, it is difficult to remember that the original comic book characters. For many, before there was Miller's Dark Knight there was Adam West's campy television Batman. However, the "Batman Masterpiece Edition" celebrates the Golden Age of the Master Detective (1939-1954). The "Batman Masterpiece Edition" consists of an illustrated hardcover book, "The Caped Crusader's Golden Age" by Les Daniels, an accurately sized reprint of the very first "Batman" comic book (not to be confused with the character's debut in "Detective Comics" #27), and a 9-inch action figure of the 1939 Batman that is the least impressive part of this boxed collection (which is now available at a greatly reduced price from its original cost). "Batman" #1 has a concise 2-page origin story and four Batman stories including two dealing with the Joker, all of which were drawn by creator Bob Kane, who is featured on a "Meet the Artist!" page. There are also a couple of two-page cartoon strips, "Major Bigsbe an' Botts" by Paul Gustavson and "Ginger Snap" by Ted Raye, and a "Fantastic Facts" page that is a second rate version of "Ripley's Believe It or Not." Still, it is fascinating not just to read these Batman stories but also to see what else were put in comic books then. The book "Batman: The Golden Age" has a very interesting look because it takes panels of old comics and blows them up, as well as having reproductions that are based on lesser condition old comics rather than original art (does Billy Rice know what happened to his old "Batman" comic?). Even if you have read about how Bob Kane came up with the idea for Batman you will appreciate the depth and detail that Les Daniels provides at the beginning of this volume. Every source of inspiration ever mentioned is documented with photographs of pulp covers, movie stills, and such. There are a few complete stories, as well as dozens of other pages and panels, including various advertisements, examples unpublished cover art and the daily strip that ran for a while. Batman at the movies is also part of this informative historical survey, which also provides some nice analysis of the evolution of the Joker's character. The only complaint is that it stops with the Golden Age. The "Batman Masterpiece Edition" is for those who have been fans of the Caped Crusader for decades because of the actual comic books as opposed to being turned on by what they saw on television or at the movies.
Rating: Summary: If there was one fault to this set, it's... Review: probably the fact that the box is too big for the contents. It seems like we've got a great big box with lots of space as the comic book, the Batman history book, and the action figure don't take up all the space in the box. But anyways, this set is a much more delightful piece than the Superman edition in the fact that it does have a Golden Age rendition of the classic Batman which was partially designed by the great Alex Ross. The figure looks as you see in the picture with that grim expression we've come to expect from Batman. He comes with a batarang that fits into his utility belt. His wings are wired so that you can pose it into various forms. And his costume is made from a wooly fabric unlike other 9" figures which use a spandex type material in order to give a classic sense to the figure. The set was definitely worth getting for the figure alone, but then we also can't forget about that nice informative book by Les Daniels. It was a pretty good historical view of Batman through his comics and tv series though it could've been a much larger book for something that was supposed to be in a "masterpiece" set.

Rating: Summary: A look into theDark Knight's history Review: This boxed set is great reading for comic collectors and caual readers alike. The book gives a lot of information on The Dark Knight's early years and shows us what the creators were thiking when they originally developed the character. In additon. the collector's action figure is a great display or play peice and depicts the golden age version of the character. Unlike the Superman or Wonder Woman MEs, the 9 inch Batman figure is articulated and nicely detaled.he even has a golden age batarang to fling at his "foes"... You won't regret picking this masterpiece up!
