Rating: Summary: incisive social commentary Review: Alan Moore has always been one of comics' most interesting iconoclasts. V For Vendetta, is for me, his best work. Combining social commentary with disturbing imagery, this tale of a dystopic Britain ruled by fear has as its protagonist a cypher who proves to be the most interesting character here. Everything here from the atmopshere to the plot work hand in hand to create one of the most gripping and intelligent pieces of speculative fiction ever.
Rating: Summary: Better Than Watchmen Review: And that's saying alot. Alan Moore may have forgetten how to write, but he still left us with his two stunning works and a great run on Swamp Thing. The comparisons to 1984 are well deserved, but V is more positive and hopeful than Orwell. The characters come off very well, and considering when this was originally published, it may be comics' first great work.
Rating: Summary: Excellent tale of the quest for that elusive "freedom" Review: This is a novel of great scope and imagination, with so many layers of plot, metaphor and symbolism to impress even the most jaded literary critic. Never mind that the tale itself is fantastic, detailing one of man's most basic and most ambiguos needs: the need to be "free". But what does it mean to be free? Free from what? The past? The Government? Your parents? The world? Life? Can anyone, even V himself, really give you the answer? Like all great novels, this book refuses to offer an easy solution; even the word of V is suspect, for his methods often parellel used by the authoratative system he so despises. Like the characters of Finch and Evey, we must seek to find the answers ourselves; we must decide what is truly important in our lives, and what we believe "freedom" to mean. Recommended
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: This story's theme is that ideals are intangible, manifesting through those that carry on the ideal's work. The "hero" of the story, V, defends his ideals against the fascistic ones currently reigning and wreaks so much sweet havoc anyone who thinks the world needs a great change would wish they could wreak. This book has been captivating throughout and provided a few genuine surprises. It lost a star, because unfortunetly, it sorta trails off towards the end, and V's impact on the world is so great its a little difficult to swallow. Still a classic, and remember, the importance is WHAT V is, not WHO he is.
Rating: Summary: The first comic that ever hit me as classic literature Review: I had read a number of comics before I could get hold of a copy of V4vendetta. I read it all in one go, cried through it, was astonished by the twists of the tale and it really got me thinking for a long time. To me, it is as good as "1984" by George Orwell. A lot of die hard critics and writers who look down on comics and say they are kids' stuff ought to read this and see if they can write remotely as well.
Rating: Summary: Recomended Review: An exelent comic with a shocking but suprisingly very posible version of the future. Alan Moore Simply put is the greatist comic book athur ever. Highly recomended for anyone who liked the wathcmen, the story is just as good and the art is much better.
Rating: Summary: One of Moore's overlooked gems Review: This one's a classic, no doubt about it. An exceptionally well-presented anti-totalitarian theme couched in an entertaining narrative. The Wachowski brothers of THE MATRIX fame want to make this their next non-Matrix film... I just can't wait. Any fan of graphic storytelling HAS to read this, and anyone who's scoffed at the medium previously should give it a try and be bowled over. Superior work, and better than most of what I've read in prose lately.
Rating: Summary: Alan Moore is a comic writing master! Review: I will give this book 4 stars because I found the story to bog down at the middle of the book. However, it was still a good book and one I would recomend if you read graphic novels.
Rating: Summary: Possibly Moore's most mature and affecting work.. Review: All hyperbolisms aside, V For Vendetta is to comics what 1984 was to literature, it's that good. As much as I adored 'Watchmen', the politicism and totalitariasm of V stuck with me and affected me more. Just marvelous. I love this book.
Rating: Summary: One person can make a difference in the face of evil. Review: A fantastic "What If" set in a Fascist England following a limited nuclear war. "V", a rebel and romantic, strives to right the wrong and wake the complacent citizens of Britain--at all costs. A must read for comic fans, political science students, and everyone else that values freedom and what it means to lose it.
