Rating: Summary: This guy can just paint, PERIOD!!!! Review: A well written and well crafted story that looks to future issues that every comic enthusiast has contemplated. What happens when the heroes age and a new breed takes their place? The answers herein are deep, well-concieved, and right on the mark. The only "drawback" to this book is the tendency to overlook Waid's intense, well-researched, story and gawk at the mind-blowing gouach paintings of super-artist Alex Ross. This version contains all produced art as well as an addendum not contained in the original comic series. Mr. Ross takes you through his production process as well. A must for anyone who respects super hero comics, and the days of old.
Rating: Summary: The Ultimate Comic Book Experience Review: Out of the ashes of a decimated DC Universe, Mark Waid and Alex Ross pulled a modern-day classic that defines a hero in a society growing ever more violent. "Kingdom Come" was an instant fanboy classic, redefining Superman and Batman simply by making them some of the only characters who stuck to their morals...something a hero should always do anyway. The comic series was brilliant, but Maggin's novel exceeds it. Not only does Maggin use Waid's flawless script almost word-for-word, but he adds a staggering amount of his own brilliant material. He and Waid combine for one of the most incredible journeys ever brought to grace the pages of comics, and indeed "Kingdom Come" is required reading for any fan.
Rating: Summary: The Best Comic Book Ever Written Review: The comic left gasping once I finished it . I realized why everyone was rushing to buy this much raved comic series. The story was the best I'd ever read , coupled with the art of the cool Alex Ross , the series simply could not fail , It didn't! The prose is so gripping , you feel the heat of the Super - human at the climax , hear Captain Marvel shout "Shazam !" above all the commotion , see the blaze of light as the nuclear bomb falls on the super-heroes. As my favourite scene , I loved Page 54 and Page 55 , with the provocative words , " The threat of Armageddon hasn't ended . It's just begun ". Amazing detail in art , brilliant narrative and great dialogue are just some of the elements that make " Kingdom Come " possibly the best comic series of all time!
Rating: Summary: from a review in the Plain Dealer by Michael Sangiacomo 3-28 Review: ... it was so good, that wasn't enough ... where does a "Kingdom Come" junkie go for his next hit? Easy: the $20 novelization of the series by Elliot S. Maggin. In this version, the writing takes the spotlight - there are only a half-dozen painted panels in the novel. Although Maggin did not write the original series, he discussed his version with the writer, Mark Waid, and both came away smiling ... The pleasure of the novel is in the little details, pieces of the story that explain what readers saw in the series.
Rating: Summary: From a review by Andrew Smith in the Commercial Appeal 4-12 Review: But the Captain read the book, and his wrath was appeased. For it was authored by Elliot S. Maggin, who labored in the vineyards at DC for 15 years as its chief Superman scribe, and knows these characters as a farmer knows his sheep. And the Captain did turn to the fans, and did grin, saying, "Take ye this book and read it. And come not back to me and complain, or I shall smite thee by continuing to write in this annoying style.
Rating: Summary: From Publisher's Weekly, 2-23-98 Review: readers will find the novel full of vivid characterizations of their favorite superbeings, gripping action scenes and notions of pure whimsy such as Planet Krypton theme restaurants. Maggin, a principal writer of Superman comics for many years, provides a model of how to turn comic books into fiction ...
Rating: Summary: one of the best comic series to come along in recent years Review: waid's ability to combine modern-day super hero mythology with the apocalypse of revelations along with the beauty of ross's paintings makes this one for the ages...
Rating: Summary: "Whose will be done?" Review: The tagline of the entire series epitomizes the entire story. In a world ten years in the future, Superman and his many allies have retired, seeing a world who thirsts for more violent and vicious heroes. After Kansas became an irradiated wasteland, the JLA has returned to the world of superheroism. The situation reaches its climax when the young and the old fight to the finish. Humanity's last hope is in one single nuclear bomb. But who deserves to live? The superheroes or the humans? That question rests on Captain Marvel's shoulders alone. He has to make the final decision This story was astoundingly deep and inspiring. When I first viewed the story, I believed that Superman was the hero of this story. I was wrong. In many ways, he was the villain, simply because he lost his humanity ten years ago. The real hero was Captain Marvel and his decision to save the world from its protectors.
Rating: Summary: KINGDOM COME IS A PRESTIGE SERIES Review: From the opening tribute to Christopher Reeve to the last page, this book is a true work of art. The paintings are unbelievable in their complexity and simplicity at the same time. I also loved all the superhero cameos and apocalyptic action. If you squint, you can see the George Reeves superman outfit in the superhero restaurant in the last chapter of the book. This is a true comic book classic and will remain so for years to come.
