Rating: Summary: It's all style, and no substance. Review: After hearing all the ballyhoo surrounding this graphic novel, I found it to be a stark disappointment. The story was weak and contrived. I wonder if one day Mark Waid thought: Hey, why don't I just slap The Dark Knight Returns together with Watchmen, and throw in the JLA? And while I'm at it, I put Alex Ross to work on drawing this thing just to boost sales! Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is a bleak, violent, and masterful phsychological portrait of the Caped Crusader. Moore's Watchmen is a labyrinthine epic about Armageddon staring down a small cluster of outdated heroes. Kingdom Come wants to be serious and dark, but there is little chacterazation and sutblety. Just WHY exactly are all of the new metahumans acting like this? There is no apparent reason for it, save the fact that Magog methods inspired them. It's almost as is they jump into an intersection and fight just because the script tells them to. Watchmen had many twists and turns that kept you hanging, the whole thing was just unpredictable. I could see through this mish-mash a mile away. If there is anything about this book that was great, it was the art. But it seems to be a wasted effort, only there to boost sales. Kingdom Come is really just another funnybook with great-looking art, that's all.
Rating: Summary: The best!!!!!!!!!! Review: This is absolutely the best comic book I have ever read. The story of all the heroes' alternate futures is amazing. I loved it! I would recommend it to anyone who liked comics.
Rating: Summary: It Pulled Me Back In Review: Many years ago, when I was just a kid, the historicle triumph that is known as The Dark Knight Returns hit the publishing world. Frank Miller's tale of the Batman is what pushed me into the comic collecting world. With my weekly allowance I would go with my best friend to our neighborhood comic shop and spend, spend, spend. Then eventually I stopped. And always regreted it. Many, many moons later - married and with a family of my own - I walked into a book store, saw the Trade Paperback for Kingdom Come, had no idea what it was about, and sat down for a quick glance. I devoured this thing from beginning to end. I felt like a kid again. This was truly the best comic that I had read since Miller's Dark Knight. Alex Ross' art was the best I had ever seen. The story was phenominal. And the concept was beautiful. It was the second turning point in my comic collecting life. It pulled me back in. Now I'm back full force as an adult who's a kid again, collecting like gang busters, and looking foward every week to the new releases. For that, Kingdom Come will aways hold a special place in my heart. If I could recommend any comic book to anyone in the world it would be Kingdom Come. A must read for young and old.
Rating: Summary: Good, but painfully contrived Review: The idea of a future such as the one depicted in Kingdom Come seemed poorly realized to me. At first glance, the idea of a world where the "real" superheroes had retired and all that was left were a bunch of superpowered thugs fighting it out in an anarchistic setting seemed awfully cool. But the more I thought about it, the more I came to feel just how awfully contrived the whole idea seemed. Kingdom Come is a whole lot of style, but not as much substance. But while the story presented to me felt weak, the fashion it was presented to me in was very strong. The painted art is very impressive, and the dialogue is rich and well thought-out. While I felt cheated with a storyline as preposterous as Kingdom Come's, I was very pleased with the material within and how it worked.
Rating: Summary: One Of The All Time Greatest Graphic Novels Review: This is one of the best, ranking just behing Dark Knight and Watchmen. Mr Ross' artwork is phenomenal with great attention to detail. Try to catch all of the inside jokes in the backgrounds... it'll take you weeks!
Rating: Summary: Phenominal Review: One of the top ten best graphic novels ever produced, right behind The Dark Knight Returns
Rating: Summary: Radio Play is Amazing!!! Review: My only wish is that they ofered this on CD. I don't know how they managed to get the voices so perfect. The story is great through the audio format and really adds some depth to the story. Plus it's really neat when Billy first says "Shazam!" I got goosbumps. Get this radio play!
Rating: Summary: Great book, not your typical novelization. Review: Usually novelizations of popular movies or television shows really stink. I'm happy to report that this book is an excellent read even if you never read the corresponding comic books (which I haven't). It certainly stands on it's own, however I think I would have gotten a little more out of it if I'd been more familiar with the DC Comics Universe. Fortunately, even those with only a basic knowledge regarding Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman will be pleased with this book. Now to go find the graphic novel version.....
Rating: Summary: A common misconception... Review: ...seems to be that Kingdom Come was the brainchild of Mark Waid when, in fact, it's Alex Ross's baby. In fact, Mark Waid was hired as scripter only after James Robinson declined. The basic plot was his and all the new characters seen were conceived and designed by him. Of course, this is completely understandable since the credits do not even list Alex Ross as co-plotter and list Mark Waid first, for reasons I can't fathom. Anyway, just thought I'd try and clear up this misconception. Oh, about the book, I agree that it's a visually stunning piece of work that's perhaps a notch above Ross's previous major work, Marvels, but I can't say I'm the biggest fan of the story.
