Summary: All 4 books were wonderful, thought VERY long!!
Review: I loved all 5 of these books, but they took me a long time because they are all about 500 pages long. It is really amazing to think about how life may have been for those people that lived during the ice age. I am only in the 7th grade and I really enjoyed these, but some people my age would probably be really bored by it. But I really want to know if there will be a book 5!!! I want to know what happens next. Please, Jean M. Auel, hear my plea!!

Summary: Ayla finally finds people who accept her
Review: Great book.

Summary: Always the Best!!!!
Review: Do the words historical fiction ring a bell here? Can't anyone read a book for the enjoyment of a good story anymore? I could care less how accurate the history is. I liked all of these books, because they are good, heartwarming stories.

Some of the reviews here have me afraid of what some people think is a good story. Sounds like most would enjoy text books quite readily.

As I have said before, and I will say always Ms. Auel is a master book writer, she puts forth warm, pain, love, and hate. But more importantly she allows the readers to feel what her characters feel. That is what is important in a book that is labeled FICTION, not how accurate it is.

I would highly recommend this series to anyone to read, with the exception of fairly young people.

Summary: Great book, dumb reviews...
Review: Only a bunch of close-minded, insecure, ultra-conservative Americans would call the descriptions of sex in Jean Auel's series "trashy". I have loved all of the books in the series, and have read all of them several times, just for the sheer joy of discovering that world again. In Mammoth Hunters, the characters of Ayla and Jondalar are a little caught up in problems that could have been resolved simply, but frankly, that happens to a lot of us. When I first read these books, I would always skim over the lengthy descriptions of the historical climate, or the production of prehistoric tools and clothes, but over time, I have begun to relish the incredible detail that Auel delves into. I can visualize every act, whether it is curing a hide or making a stone knife. Just fascinating. As for the sex scenes, thank god somebody can actually write good depictions of sex that are actually fun to read. I don't know, I found them very informative when I was young. I agree with another reviewer. These books should be given to our daughters, so they can read what strong women they can be. Way to go Jean!

Summary: Not as good as the others but.....
Review: I have read all of Jean Auel's books and, although I liked this one the least, it was interesting and informative. Some of you people are really too harsh! You have to consider Ayla's upbringing and the circumstances which are thrown upon her.

Summary: about ten times as long as it needs to be
Review: if this is how people related than we as a species have come a long way. the problems between ayla and jondolar are valid but could have been solved (and are) in one conversation. the whoel book is waiting for them to talk, which doesn't need any of the plot to happen.

Summary: Female heroes - we don't have enough of them
Review: GIVE THESE BOOKS TO YOUR DAUGHTER! Jean Auel's series gives us a much-needed female hero to follow and empathize with, and I wish it had existed when I was a teenager. Fantasizing youself as knight in armor or Wild West trapper always involved extensive subterfuge and cross-dressing to make it work. Here is a hero, the original girl (/boy) scout, who takes charge and gets it done, and finds love in the most un-thought-of corners. Now 36, I have read all 4 novels several times (after the first couple of times skipping over the botanical info I can't remember because it's in the wrong language, and the "torrid sex scenes" (previous reviewer) since it hardly adds to the story). As with other books, I'm sure I'll re-read it some more times when in need of comfort and challenge and in the "take me away from the cyberworld" mood. As many here, I look forward to the next volume(s), which I'll also devour in 2 or 3 days (incl. in traffic jams and checkout counters), and re-read every year or so. GIVE THESE BOOKS TO YOUR DAUGHTER! Go, Auel!

Summary: Tsk, Tsk
Review: This book was a little too predictable and frusterating. I didn't like it how Ayla and Jondalar were always assuming the opposite of what the other person was thinking. I think Ayla was a little too talented.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: not for school libraries...
Review: i first read this book when i was 13. my parents wouldn't allow me to have pornography, but that's okay, i had the mammoth hunters :-)~ i was really interested in the primitive culture, but quickly realised there was nothing primitive about it - ayla and company could easily fit in our 20th century world. by the end of the book i expected ayla to be mastering calculus and fashioning bronze tools - clearly such a gifted girl should be the head of a matriachal society.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: I weep at the lost potential for this series
Review: I really loved "Clan of the Cave Bear", and I thought this series was going to be something special. Instead, the sequels have displayed the most abysmal lack of imagination that you can fine. It's a (badly-written) Harlequin Romance in bear skins.
