Rating: Summary: One of the best fantasy books I've ever read. Review: I love all of Jordan's books because you get "sucked into" the character's world. His books are like taking one huge history lesson. Jordan literally made a world and let's his readers visit it.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books of a new generation Review: While reading this book, I was totally caught up in the world that Robert Jordan so superbly lays out. The plot and characters are rich and in-depth, and while reading, you are caught up in their lives and struggles. Easily the best book of this generation, or any generation.
Rating: Summary: Great book + series. Review: I enjoy this series and it is definatly one of the best. I give it only four stars because the books are long, and the action is spread out. Other than that, the series is great.
Rating: Summary: Slow beginning, but good book. Characters whine too much! Review: It was pretty good...just get your way past the first 75 pages and it will get going. Also, the main characters whine wayyyy to much in the book, kinda got old.
Rating: Summary: Fulfills my desire for epic... Review: For all of the comments on how you should read tolkien instead, I have tried to read tolkien several times and found its "Literature quality" distracting, and thus never completed it. Jordan's books (I am now on the 3rd) I find mesmerising, even though they are derivative and easy to guess what the next plot twist will be. Also interesting to me is that there is very little fantasy that i enjoy, because it is usually derivative and obvious. I don't know what it is about Jordan's books, but i really enjoy the characters and their development. It really is like a soap opera, but what the hell! I would recommend the series, the first book of it at least for starters, to anyone who likes a neverending story with lot's of character growth. The 4 stars i give it is more of a fun factor than a great literature factor...
Rating: Summary: 'Eye..' ably begins a thrilling saga Review: I'm not going to claim 'The Wheel of Time' is the best series ever written (even its most stalwart fans will have to admit it pales compared to Tolkien) nor claim Robert Jordan as the greatest writer..but 'Eye of the World' is the first book in a well above-average series. Frankly the attacks I've seen here baffle me. What does it matter whether each character thinks others are better with girls than he? Claims that the characters lack substance are absurd. By the end of the third novel, all of the main characters are fully fleshed out. Jordan's series isn't hard literature. No one (to my knowledge) is placing this alongside Tolstoy, Dickens, or Melville. It's escapist fantasy. And in that vein it's among the best of its genre. This has earned a treasured place in my bookshelf.
Rating: Summary: Strong in some places, weak in others Review: Jordan is a man of many words. This should not be taken as a book, but as a series. There are several reasons for dissing Jordan: standard plot devices (farmboy becomes messiah, etc.), weak writing skills, the fact that some people never die, and endless hashing and re-hashing of already-established information. But if you want to really make friends with a set of characters, and remember them forever, and go back to them when you need the simplicity of a warm and readable tale in idealized medieval settings, Jordan is your man.
Rating: Summary: big disappointment Review: this book was very disappointing. I bought it after a lot of people said it was one of their favorites. I found it boring and too long. It might have been better if it was maybe half as long. I read 13 other books while reading it because it was so long and boring. I was going to rate it a one star but I think the charater Loial deserves a star of his own. He was about the only thing from the book that I liked.
Rating: Summary: Slow start, but becomes one of the best of its genre. Review: I loved it. It's a marvelous read with a good plot. It's the pinnacle of the action/adventure/fantasy literature.
Rating: Summary: Jordan ROCKS! Review: Jordan surpasses all previous works of fantasy with this novel. Griping, spellbinding, a true pageturner. Characters that seem true to life combined with fantastic creatures and magic. The story line pulls you in and doesnt let you go. I couldn't put the book down for anything. I recomend this book to anyone who loves fantasy and even to those who do not. Jordan appeals to all readers with this tale of adventure, suspense, and drama. I can't wait to read the next in the series.
