Rating: Summary: great, but doesn't quite touch the fantasy standard Review: I thought this story was great, perhaps one of the greatest I've read. The book is sprawling and full of excitement and new scenarios and is eagerly recommended. I took this book on a one week trip not sure if I would like it (I brought Dune along as a foolproof precaution). On the second day I finished an H.G. Wells story that I had already started and picked up The Eye of the World. I had not planned on finishing that week, but to my surprise I found myself with a day and a half free after closing the seven hundred and something-th page. I liked it so much that I found myself CRANKY that I had failed to bring the sequel along as well. As soon as I stepped through the front door today I immediately made a bee-line for tThe Great Hunt. This is the kind of effect that this book has. ADDICTIVE!The two problems that I found with the book is the lack of good and smooth-flowing names (that is why LotR is THE fantasy standard)and also, Jordan let his influences show too much. He obviously had Nazgul on the mind when he brainstormed the Myrddraal. And those of you who have read Lord of the Rings (all, hopefully) and Dune (the second greatest story that I have found) I think you will notice the resemblances between WOT and Jordan's influences. That aside, the novel is well worth the money to buy it. That's all....
Rating: Summary: Much ado about nothing Review: I still can't comprehend the praises The Wheel Of Time series have gotten. Having read 4 books of the series, I don't have an idea what the fuss is all about. Jordan's worlds are derivative, characters are too melodramatic and the pacing is rambling and plodding. Heck, I have to wake myself up just to follow what's happening to Rand (a.k.a Luke Skywalker) al'Thor. Just goes to show that even if a book has a lot of critical praise in it, it's still not for everyboday
Rating: Summary: DING DING, We've got a winner! Review: This book is awsome. No doubt about it. If you can read 70 pages, then you will like it. Thats how long it will take, just 70 pages and then you find yourself neglecting chores, work, and sleep to read the next page. The world is so engrosing and real that all the characters begin to dance around in your head. After I read at night, and I feel sleepy I put the book down, and close my eyes. But the story continues behind my eyelids and I have to wake my self up and remind my self that what I just saw didnt happen. No other book has done this to me. But please, dont pick up this book unless you are willing to read, to comit, to all of the 8 books that are out now. But if you are you wont regret it.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant, refreshing stuff! Review: In the month or so since I started reading the series, I must say that I've become a fan. Robert Jordan has been accused of being too wordy, but every word is there for a purpose. I'm only 14, but highly critical, and as often as not, slightly pessimistic. This book gets the thumbs up. Brilliant!
Rating: Summary: Startingly brilliant and well written. Review: I first bought this book back in 1990, I thought so boring and meaningless that I stopped after chapter 3. Then 1995. A friend said, I must read it, I did, expecting the worst, yet it turned out to be a brilliant journey, marred only by a bad ending.
Rating: Summary: A Classic book...Ive read it about 10 times in one year! Review: I love this book. While I didnt like the begining I kept reading and got HOOKED! I couldnt stop reading the series. I had never read a fantasy book (actually ANY book) before and at the insistance of a Jordan crazed fan I picked it up. Its a perfect first book to read. The charecters develope and change and you either grow to love or hate them. I cant wait for the 8th book. RJ ROCKS!
Rating: Summary: unparralelled in excellence Review: Rober Jordans story of three boys growing up is incredible. He manages to bring the world of Tolkien and the world of Arthur together like never before. this book is a must read for any fantasy fan.
Rating: Summary: Over-rated Review: It speaks of the sad state of fantasy literature that his mound of hack is touted as its pinnacle. Granted, Jordan can do one thing quite well -- write descriptions. That does not necessarily make for a good literature, good characterization, or a good plot. As a matter of fact, Jordan has no concept of how to create a plot and his characterization is atrocious. The book is full of superfluous characters and pages of filler. There is no climax or conclusion, and the action scenes are unengagingly writtne. It is too bad, really, for once in a while there is a glimmering of an idea or a nice scene. Mostly -- boring, derivative, and over-long.
Rating: Summary: 2nd Best series ever! Review: Other than Tolkein's Lord of the Rings, this is the best series that I have ever read. The detail that Jordan shows in the creation of his world makes this a series that truly captures your imagination. Detailed, evolving characters and a plot that deftly weaves seemingly insignificant details into an interlocking whole as well as a complex but understandable system of magic - all create an exceptionally well balanced and riveting series for readers of all ages.
Rating: Summary: decent reading to pass the time away ... Review: I bought this book because my car blew up, forcing me to ride the notoriously slow Tulsa Transit. I enjoy fantasy, but this is the first contemporary series I've tried. It wasn't impressive enough to instill a desire to read any of its sequels; reading the other reviews here really makes me wonder. Those who praise it highly should read around a bit perhaps! It isn't at all original in premise (Star Wars crossbred with The Hobbit), but what is? everything borrows from something, yes, even Tolkien! The one bright spot as opposed to much other fantasy is the feel that the author actually thought out the plot, and its sub-plots, an revealed it little by little, as opposed to the fairy-tale paradigm where things just sorta happen. Characters and world are well thought through, but the execution is predictable.
