Summary: BBC Audio Version (CD) is First Rate
Review: I remember reading the The Lord of the Rings many times when I was in middle school, and have seldom re-visited the trilogy since then. I also remember listening to parts of the original BBC version of the story on public radio. With the release of the original BBC version to CD, I have been able to re-capture the images and feelings I experienced when first reading the trilogy. The BBC version is masterfully produced and directed, if a bit meledramatic at times, and tells the story that can be enjoyed at home or on the road while making a long drive. Listening to the BBC audio version has sparked my interest in Tolkien and LOTR once again, and I plan to re-read the entire series of Tolkien novels and share them with my kids. My kids (6 and 4) enjoy listening to the CD's in the car and prefer them over listening to music.

Summary: Read the books before you see the movie
Review: As I'm sure you've heard, these books are being made into a series of big-budget live-action movies. I eagerly await them. But, I cherish the images in my mind from when I first read the books (in the 9th grade). If you see the film first, you'll visualize the film instead of creating it in your mind.

Also, the books are long. Take your time and linger over them. Even the very last page can captivate your imagination if you take the time. You only get to read them the first time once.

Finally, people put down The Hobbit, but it's a good book and will help you understand The Lord of the Rings. Read it first.

Summary: 13 CD Ian Holm audio version of LOTR
Review: I have read LOTR many times, and I find that this audio version captures the spirit and most of the substance of the printed version. Amazing to believe that in 13 hours you could provide a narrative that does so much so well.

Summary: CD Versions
Review: This is an excellent work of fiction. But I would like to know which audio version of TLOTR is best. I have listened to a little bit of the Soundelux version and was dissapointed: Is the BBC version better?

Summary: BBC Does LOTR Right!
Review: I was a young teenager when the local public radio station began to play J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Since we could not afford a TV listening to audio adaptations of classic books on the radio had to do.

I recall being spellbound as I listened eagerly every week for the next installment of this masterpiece. The BBC did an outstanding job in casting the voices of the various characters. The sound effects added are well done and while this is an abridged version of the novels, they stay true to the Tolkien story. Characters say exactly the same things as they do in the novels!

I highly recomend this collection to anyone who loves Tolkien or for anyone who buys audio books for those long road trips!

Summary: The Lord of the Rings!
Review: When it comes to audio productions of Tolkien's work, this is a masterpiece. Those who have followed the Trilogy with appreciate how this production breaths life into the characters. It is truly an adventure when you hit that play button. Five stars for the BBC production!

Summary: AWESOME!!!
Review: I LOVE this book! The recording is great... I've borrowed it from the local library more times than I can count, and I listen to it while on my paper route. The characters each have thier own voices, and GOLLUM IS GREAT!! Peter Woodthorpe does Gollum just as you'd imagine him sounding. I first heard this on a family trip to Kentucky when I was in second grade. Since then, I've read the books numerous times (also marvellous, of course) and listened to the tapes more. A must-have for all Tolkien fans!!

Summary: I love it...
Review: Although it is abridged (I really regret that) this is the very best production I ever heard. Very good artists, very good production!!! After that I bought a production of Soundlux. It is more complete, but it has not half of the real(!) Tolkien feeling and magic of this production!! Buy it!!! Now!! (No, I don't get paid for this ;-))

Summary: Most exciting audio book yet!
Review: For anyone who enjoys audio books, Bantam Books' abridged boxed set is a must! Unlike most books which are read by one person, Brian Sibley has gathered a large cast of players to bring this story to life. The characters are portrayed so vividly that, by closing your eyes, YOU ARE ON THE JOURNEY with the Fellowship. The sound effects are terrific, helping the listener transport to the places in the book. If you don't have much of an imagination, this set of 13 tapes will paint a picture that doesn't require any effort on your part!
