Summary: What an adventure!
Review: I've read near 200 horror novels and this book contains the single most horrifying scene I have ever read! However, for the most part, other than two or three really scary scenes, this is not a horror novel. It's an adventure story. If you've read Lincoln/Child before then you won't be surprised. If you havn't, these two tell a very believable story. They do their homework. One of the best things about this book is that it's completely plausible. I must warn you; if you're claustraphobic DO NOT read this book. If you aren't, you will be.

Summary: What a read!
Review: They've done it again! This is such pure escapism that I did not put it down until I finished it. Literally. I kept promising myself I would go to bed but just couldn't tear myself away. And the suffering for lack of sleep the next day was worth it. I've read all of their books and am amazed, but very pleased, that they continue to come up with such plausible, exciting, thought-provoking, entertaining and fascinating plots. Their characters are a bit weak, but who cares? The stories go rushing along so well the characters don't really matter. If you have not read these guys - do so! You won't regret it.

Summary: Fictional Story, but very similar to real-world island!
Review: I found the story of Riptide fascinating. The island described by the authors is fictional, but immediately reminded me of Oak Island, Nova Scotia where there is an actual pit called the 'Money Pit' where pirate treasure is supposed to be buried. To date, it has never been successfully uncovered, and there is a trap built into this actual pit where it fills with seawater, thus keeping people out of it. So far, it has been excavated to 150', and has been responsible for 6 deaths. After learning about the actual pit located on Oak Island, and knowing about the possibility of true Pirate treasure located there, reading RIPTIDE was all the more exciting!

Summary: Good semi-historical fiction - this one entertains.
Review: I've always liked historical fiction. Take a nugget of truth and add characters and circumstance. This is a more place-driven (location, history, technology) tale than character driven; however, the characters are well done. The team historian, the salvage director, and the island's owner (Hatch) are well rounded, interesting characters. The authors did a particularly good job with Hatch. They easily could have made Hatch a disenchanted malcontent hovering around the main story. Instead, he was a supporter of the project and a very active participant. Hatch's love interest and other members of the salvage crew are not as well developed because the main star here is the buried treasure. How is it defended? What will happen as the treasure hunters get closer? These questions kept the pages turning.

Summary: a dissapointment
Review: don't get me wrong, i'm not saying it was a bad book, but i know what these two are capable of writing, and they can do better than this. the idea behind the story is overdone and wasn't all that interesting to begin with. the characters aren't as dynamic as they usually are in their books, but i didi like the water pit.

Summary: A fun and wild ride!
Review: I'm usually bored with formula novels and I expected to be disappointed by this one as well. The buried pirate's treasure angle has been done numerous times since "Treasure Island", but never quite as well as the original. This novel, however, gave the story a unique twist that was entirely exhilarating and fresh.

The story follows the latest (of many) attempts to retrieve the unheard of treasure of the pirate "Red Ned" Ockham. The book begins by giving a 200-year history of the fates of treasure-seekers and explains why they have all failed. The reason is the devious "Water-Pit" trap, designed by the architect Macallan, a man known for his church steeples and not for his booby-trapping ability.

The story is believable and fun. The main character, Malin Hatch, is a lovable little schlep who occasionally grows cajones when they're needed. Unfortunately, his run-ins with Streeter and his bizarre love-life are laughable at best. His first-love, Claire, is a one-dimensional character easily forgotten. The exotic Isobel Bonterre is also easily forgettable, though much more interesting than the aforementioned Claire. The town preacher, Woody Clay, is as dynamic a character as Captain Niedelman, the leader of the treasure hunt. Both of them keep you guessing, which is odd, because zealots are usually uninteresting to read about.

I don't want to spoil the book or the eventual movie for the reader. Just read it and tell your friends about it. This was my first Preston and Childs book and I'm sure it won't be my last. I enjoyed the mix of history, archaelogy, geology, computer science, medicine, cryptography, and architecture. This book made me feel much more well-rounded intellectually. Read it!

Summary: Brilliant, a masterpiece of suspense, I couldn't put it down
Review: Lincoln Child and Douglas J. Preston are two fine authors in peek condition. This book covers multiple genres. Malin Hatch returns to a treasure ridden island his father owned. Malin falls in love with a french diver, discovers the body of his brother and learns the true nature of the awesome treasure hidden in the island. This tome dives into the deep recesses of greed, and insanity as the expedition falls out of Malin's hands and into the hands of the captain, obsessed with 'Saint Micheal's sword'. It's a gripping story that keeps you guessing until the horrible thruth of the island, and the treasure is slowly revealed.
