Rating: Summary: Great Rolicking Adventure.... Review: Childs & Preston do this style of book so well. I gulped it down in 2 bites, loving every minute of it's fast paced action "Tale". Pirates treasure, mystery illnesses, scary bad & good guys. Fun summer read.
Rating: Summary: Fun and Entertaining Read! Review: Loved this book. I have all of their books so far and this one is just as good as the rest!
Rating: Summary: Terrific, As Expected Review: I first read Child and Preston's The Relic a few months before its horrible counterpart of a movie came out, and I decided that it was perhaps the best book I had ever read outside of Stephen King's Dark Tower Series. I bought its sequel, Reliquary, with high expectations, and I was not let down. I saw this book in the bookstore and almost bought it once, but I did not really understand the plotline at all from the synopsis, so I refrained from purchasing it at that time. I saw the hardback edition on sale in the local bookstore about a year later (I have this urge to buy just about any good book--or presumably good book--that is in hardback for my collection) and so, of course, I bought it, expecting the best from such fantastic authors. Once again, they did not let me down. Riptide is, if you can't figure it out as I could not, a story about a high-tech treasure hunt for two billion dollars worth of "Red Ned" Ockham's treasure, buried at the bottom of the lethal, ingenious piece of architecture known as the Water Pit, on the gloomy Ragged Island, off the coast of Maine. The main character and owner of Ragged Island, Dr. Malin Hatch, is not a great hero or anything, and I did not like him as much as the characters in Relic or Reliquary, but he was okay. He is approached early on by the enigmatic treasure hunter Captain Neidelman, who wants to find the Ragged Island treasure. I truly expected Neidelman to be the great savior of them all, but it does not turn out that way. They do begin the hunt, though, and it starts out nice and orderly, but chaos quickly develops, and the body count rises. Is it a curse, or is a perfectly explainable force killing these people? I won't tell you. Anyway, the characters are not very deep, and you don't really care about it when they die (well except for maybe one), but it is still a great read, and it includes some cool new weapons (however unbelievable it might seem for some of them, such as explosive harpoons on the command ship). I would recommend this book to just about anyone.
Rating: Summary: Good, but overated Review: Don't be deceived by the synopsis and reviews of this book. It's a good book, but it's not great. It's a little light on the "thriller" scale. There are no monsters or evil spirits in this book to "juice" things up a bit. If you're interested in a book that is high on the "thriller" scale, read the Relic and Reliquary. "Phantoms" by Dean Koontz is also high on my list. This book deserves no more than three stars.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read For Preston-Child Fans! Review: Another great work by Preston and Child! I read this book on my summer vacation and before I knew it, it was over (the book, that is)! The suspense is great and the book hooks you in on the first page. If you've read their other books and enjoyed them, Riptide will not disappoint. If you've never read their books, just check out all the other customer reviews ~ we all can't be wrong!
Rating: Summary: Pirates and Lost Treasure Review: A thouroughly enjoyable adventure and a very good read. The authors are successful in captivating the readers in the characters, the setting and the hunt for the treasure
Rating: Summary: An excellent thriller Review: Once again, Preston and Child have written a novel which will keep the reader enthralled for several hours. The authors keep the reader on the edge of his/her seat from the beginning of the book until the end.The authors evidently do quite a bit of research for their novels. Their description of the Water Pit and its various pitfalls is incredible. The only downside to the novel is its big buildup to the discovery of what lies in the Pit and what happens when the discovery is made. Due to the immense buildup, the eventual discovery is a slight disappointment. Some readers will probably decipher the mystery before it's revealed. Other than that, this novel is a very entertaining and fun read. The authors of "The Relic" have written another outstanding novel.
Rating: Summary: AN ADVENTURE THAT I DIDN'T WANT TO END! Review: Preston and Child have done it again! My wife hates when I pick up a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child because I don't come to bed, I don't eat dinner, I don't get any chores done. I can't stop reading. Needless to say that it is an excellent book.
Rating: Summary: A real gut wrencher Review: I thought that nothing could compare to THE RELIC in terms of the suspensful feeling of being deep in a sub-terrain level of darkness and panic. Aparently , I was wrong. The RELIC team has done it again, making my stomach turn and chills return to my spine. This was such a page turner, I got frustrated every time I had to put it down. The writing style was similar to JURASIC PARK , the way it described computer data and internal workings. The characters, to me, were similar to those in JAWS, where you almost KNEW which ones would meet their demise....and the action packed, booby trapped pit scenes were reminecent of INDIANA JONES. Add to that all the startling elements of the RELIC and you can't go wrong. It is by far one of the best books Iv'e read so far this year. Technically stimulating, yet fast paced and enjoyable to read. I'll give it 6 more months before the rights are picked up for a blockbuster hit movie!
Rating: Summary: Superior mystery-action adventure Review: I just had the distinct pleasure of reading Riptide. It has been a long time since I enjoyed a story so much. Treasure hunters who are entranced by the Oak Island mystery will find very creative, and fact-based fiction, regarding the puzzle. The only character I wondered about was the very lazy Dr. Hatch who is not like any physician I have ever worked withh......thank goodness! The characters are strong for the most part with insights into their personal thoughts and fears. This would make a great movie. Excellent read...enjoy
