Summary: Fabulous Plot and Writing
Review: This was the most outstanding book I've read in a long time. The plot is ingeneous and the writing top notch. My husband read the book first, and could not put it down. He recommended I read it too. I read quite a bit, but I mostly do it when I have time. With this book I made time. I hurried through my chores so I could snatch up the book and continue reading. When I was finished I rushed out and bought two more books by Child and Preston - "Relic" and "Thunderhead" (that's all the bookstore had). My husband latched on to them while I was reading something else. He said they too were wonderful and he could not put them down. I can't wait to read them. I can't believe it's taken us so long to discover these guys. They're fantastic!

Summary: These guys always write about neat stuff!
Review: How did they know I'm interested in stuff like this? And all the other tales related to the stories they write? Wow---I was so thrilled that someone took the "legend" of the "Money Pit" and wrote a story about what would happen if a modern team of specialists went and worked on it----what would the authors imaginations entail? You will not be disappointed with the story. Very inventive and action packed. Granted, there isn't much into character exploration and interaction, but I didn't expect this book to be the end-all, be-all. I expected it to entertain me while I commuted back and forth to grad school an hour away. I found myself listening to it on all my errands, too, entranced with the suspenseful tale of the modern day owner of the island, Mallen Hatch and his partnership with a treasure hunter, Needleman and his crew. They make a deal to split the treasure 50/50; etc. With these authors, I wondered what was dreadful about the treasure and which of the "main" characters was going to bite it. I sat in my driveway, with ice cream getting warm in the trunk, after an excuse to listen to the tape made me drive to the grocery store, my 6 year old daughter insisting we listen to the rest of the tale of pirates and buried treasure. We couldn't move. Just like someone snared on a booby trapped island. Gosh, what more could a person want in a story?

Summary: One of the best adventures ever!
Review: This book is a grown-up, deadly serious adult version of the movie "The Goonies." Basically a treasure hunt story, it pumps up the action with it's modern day spin of hunting for an impossible to get to treasure with today's technology. As escapist reading goes, this is a real keeper.

Summary: A wonderful adventure
Review: I loved this book. I read it on a weekend when the weather was a bit out of sorts so that might have added to the effect of the book. But nevertheless, it was thrilling. All the characters were written well, as was the setting of the island and surrounding areas. Made me want to move there. At any rate, the action never really stops through then entire novel. Its hard for me to find a great adventure, other than Clive Cussler or some of Koontz's latest work. So when I found this, it was perfect for the weekend. I have read both Relic and the sequel and loved them as well, and this work was no less thrilling.

Summary: A great adventure
Review: Once again, Preston and Child have not only proven that they write a great story, but that they write truly original ones.

Riptide succeeds on many levels, but the character development is particularly strong. Preston and Child lead you throught a maze of pertsonalities, cross-purpose and deceit without ever missing a beat. There is no true "bad guy" in this novel, bu there are many people who fall victim to some of the less savory aspects of human nature. That's really what makes "Riptide" so enjoyable, it has an end, but it's not as neat and tidy as many might hope.

As in many of Preston/Child's books, the nemisis isn't a who, but a what. In this case it's the most diabolical treasure trove since Oak Island, which contains an artifact with a sinister, irresistable allure.

I enjoyed this book immensely, it's only downside is that you can't read it on a week night because you'll never sleep.

Summary: Should of been better
Review: This is the fourth Lincoln Preston novel I've read, and althought it was a good story, I found it somewhat lacking of their other novels.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Fun but disappointing
Review: A treasure hunt with a discovery twist is what the book seems to hint at what it will be. However, it is more of a treasure hunt than anything. It reads like a movie with a very typical end. Not 10 pages into it I knew how it would end. Its fun, fast to read, but often gets bogged down with useless subplots that do not advacne the plot at all. I would say more, but I don't want to ruin the book for anyone.

Summary: Now THIS is what you call a swashbuckling adventure!
Review: EVERYTHING about this book screams, "MOVIE"! But since Hollywood butchered 'Relic' and turned one of THE GREATEST thrillers of the past decade into a silly waste-of-time matinee, I'd recommend to the authors to leave it as is. 'Riptide' is an old-fashioned fun adventure/thriller. The story of Ragged Island sounds like a pirate story out of some historical novel of the high seas, and Lincoln & Child make the most of their time behind the computer and make us feel our money was well spent on this superior adventure yarn.

I HAVE to admit I actually figured out the 'problems' they were having with the Island about three-quarters through the book, but that in no way took away the entertainment the book provided. Talk about a perfect formula for an adventure story: A buried treasure on an island that is VERY mysterious...what could be MORE entertaining that that? I can't think of much, and the authors have once again made me feel that buying their books in hardback is a gamble that WILL pay off. I have YET to read a poor book by these guys (and I've read them all to date) and I STILL think that 'Relic' is their best, but I have to admit, 'Riptide' 'Thunderhead' and the amazingly fun 'The Ice Limit' are getting close. Pure FUN STUFF! Lincoln & Child are really worth the price!
