Rating: Summary: Unreal and corny story Review: This was the first book I've read by this author and it will probably be the last. I read to the finish because it was easy reading but the storyline was so corny.
Rating: Summary: Its Romance Not Nonfiction Review: I'm amazed at the number of reviews that say the story isn't believeable... I say its romance not nonfiction for crying out loud. SEP makes me laugh out loud and I read her books for entertainment not hard hitting facts. I especially enjoyed Nealy's contact with former First Ladies. (Talk about an exclusive club) I absolutely love SEP's depiction of Button/Demon and Mat's frustration dealing with her. Living off of I-270 I could easily picture Nealy's getaway. Bravo!
Rating: Summary: Rather Disappointed Review: First Lady was a disappointment to me. Some of the plotdevicesto move it along were too incredible. The sex was extremely tepid. It was an easy read and was interesting in stretches, particularly the descriptions of life at the White House. Coming after some really great SEP romances, it definitely was a disappointment. I love to re-read my favorites, but First Lady will not get one. END
Rating: Summary: Entertaining, as always. Review: Very entertaining, as are all of Susan E Phillips books. The story was perhaps a bit farfetched - but isn't that part of the package? I am looking forward to the next book by SEP!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely wonderful! Review: I'm one of SEP's biggest fans. I bought First Lady the day it hit the book shelves and I read it in one sitting. It reminded me very much of her earlier works --Glitter Baby, Fancy Pants, Honeymoon, and Hot Shot -- the books that made me a fan. Susan Elizabeth Phillips writes this type of book better than anyone else. She has a unique voice and the ability to touch hearts. First Lady was an ideal showcase for her incredible talent. It was a wonderful love story and I'm very glad she shared it with me.
Rating: Summary: Oh, you NEED this book.... Review: ...if you absolutely positively need to be transported into romance, adventure, humor and pathos by a can't-miss author. I adored the fairytale aspects of this as well as the deeper threads of meaning--a woman in the middle of her life, coming of age, is a story I cannot read often enough. The scenes of Nealy "breaking away" from her restrictive life were so triumphant, and her romance with Matt well-paced and incredibly sexy. A fabulous book, the sort that made me call my mother and say, "Have I got a book for you...."
Rating: Summary: Five Stars For First Lady! Review: First Lady was a great book! Like all other Susan Elizabeth Phillip books it was a book you could sit back, relax, and totally get lost for an afternoon. First Lady made me literally laugh out loud at some of the funnier parts. My husband would ask me "what is so funny?", so I would have to tell him what was going on. I would definetely recommend First Lady to anyone. If you've never read Susan Elizabeth Phillips and you read this, believe me, you won't be able to wait to read her other titles. I just don't know how I'm going to be able to wait for her next title in 2001!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: Susan Elizabeth Phillips is a writer who can take our fantasies and make them living, breathing stories filled with realistic characters. Who hasn't occasionally wished they could be famous? SEP shows us that being a national institution, much less famous, isn't all it's cracked up to be.I loved Mat and Nealy. Here are two needy people who don't realize just how needy they are, and find the solution to their needs in each other. They also find a family complete with children, grandparents, a dog, and a Winnebago named Mabel. Mat and Nealy's journey is heartwarming and funny. You know it's going to end, but you just want it to never end. I had a few small caveats: Ms. Phillips' political ideas (both secular, and, in one scene, religious) were a bit silly. While it's true that one can honestly embrace ideas from across the spectrum of politics (left, right, middle), such a person usually (not always) isn't well-rounded, but a fence sitter who prefers reading polls to listening to conscience. It was disappointing that if Phillips was going to portray Nealy as left, right, and middle-of-the road, she didn't take the time to show (not tell) Nealy's politics as an integrated vision, rather than just wishy-washiness. I was also disappointed with the secret of Nealy's marriage to the late President. While it makes realistic Nealy's falling in love with someone else within six months of her late husband's death, I wish Phillips could have found some other reason. This particular secret is becoming a trend in her books (IT HAD TO BE YOU is another example) and I hope it doesn't become an agenda. Ms. Phillips also needs to get her protocol straight. The masculine equivalent of the First Lady is not the First Husband. (We don't call the President's wife the First Wife, after all.) The proper masculine equivalent would be the First Gentleman. That said, this is a great book. I'd love to see Lucy have her own story, perhaps while her mother is still in public life. Wouldn't it be great to see Lucy fall in love with a Secret Service agent?
Rating: Summary: Seriously Addictive Review: The first book I ever read of SEP's was Nobody's Baby But Mine, and I've been hooked ever since. But this novel, a wonderful story of how confining the pressure of the public spotlight can be, was more than just great. It is romantic storywriting at it's finest. Nealy is a character you can relate to, and Mat has just enough flaws to make him memorable. But it was the addition of the children to the melting pot that gave the story it's heart. You can begin to feel the desperation and drama, and yet to say that SEP didn't have as much humor in this book is a serious miscalculation. There are just too many scenes where these characters find themselves in situations so hilarious, I had a hard time stifling my giggles. First Lady keeps you guessing, and is not in the least predictable. This story was like chocolate. I couldn't get enough. And neither will you. My only regret is waiting a WHOLE YEAR for the next one!
Rating: Summary: I agree with the last reviewer Review: I have been a huge fan of SEP for a while now, and always eagerly await her new books. This one, while not bad, was a bit of a disappointment. It lacked SEP's trademark humor and the politics were so whitewashed as to be unbelievable. As the last reviewer said, I too was more excited for the coming book- which takes us back to her unique, funny and sexy terrain of pro-sports. It'll be torture waiting for 2001. Will just have to reread "Nobody's Baby But Mine" and "Heaven, Texas."
