Rating: Summary: The Wonderful World of Susan Elizabeth Phillips! Review: This story was very interesting because it challenges the political structure of the American executive. Specifically, Dennis Case, former fictional president of the United States was gay! Imagine that. I wonder how America would handle a gay president? Moreover, the main character Nealy eventually becomes president, which is even more gender-bending. While, "First Lady" was a little far-fetched, it was nevertheless, filled with witty dialogue and more importantly, wholly entertaining!Nealy Case needs a break, desperately. Thus, she plots to escape the White House, which has become her prison. She does this by walking out, plain as day - only she is disguised as an old woman. Of course, the story would end if she was not confronted with a major obstacle. That is, her Chevy gets stolen...maybe because she left her keys in the ignition n'est-ce pas? This leads Nealy into hitching a ride with Mat Jorik, who of all things, is a journalist, albeit a somewhat tarnished journalist. Anyways, I don't want to spoil the story for anyone. Simply put, this story is very lovely.
Rating: Summary: A remarkable road trip Review: With the death of her husband, Cornelia Litchfield Case had thought she'd escaped the pressures of political life. But it was not to be. Continuing her role as First Lady for the new, unmarried president has taken its toll and Nealy decides she needs time off from her life of political obligation, social expectations, and public scrutiny. After careful planning, she escapes detection and finds herself unshackled from her burden. In complete contrast, Mat Jorik finds himself saddled with two daughters who aren't truly his because of his own soft heart. When Nealy reprimands him for leaving the baby unattended, he offers the now immobile woman a job caring for the girls in exchange for room and board inside Mabel, their Winnebago. Susan Elizabeth Phillips has written a sensational story that truly crosses the border into women's fiction. The romance is underdeveloped but the evolving affection between Nealy, Mat, and the girls is wonderfully written. Phillips does an excellent job of developing this foursome into an odd patchwork of a family by giving us insight into Lucy whose adolescence puts her at an awkward stage but whose love for her baby sister takes precedence above everything else. As a romance "First Lady" is perhaps not the best, but seeing it through the eyes of Nealy makes it a wonderful journey of self-discovery.
Rating: Summary: And the FIRST LADY of romance is............. Review: Susan Elizabeth Phillips! By the time this book had reached my pile of "to read next...top priority" books, I had already read several SEP novels. She has quickly soared to my "favorite authors" list. As with her other books, this one has the hunky hero. The visual I got from her description of Mat lingers on (sigh!) and it was easy to see how our heroine & First Lady, Nealy, got weak in the knees at the sight of him, but hard to understand how she was able to reject him for so long. First Lady or Crazy Lady? You have to cheer for the grittiness of Lucy, the 14 year old who desperately wants & needs a family and you want to find a infant to cuddle like baby-girl, Button. Ones intelligence quotient may not escalate while reading this novel, but your feel-good factor will soar!
Rating: Summary: A True Fantasy....Oh, but what a Wonderful One! Review: The First Lady is a modern day romance about a widow of the assignated president who is forced to stay on as First Lady to a new single president. She kind of comes across as being weak and being manipulated by her father and the new president....but then she decides she is tired of it and runs away. She does everything right and then gets careless and has her car stolen...in walks Mat, Button, and Lucy....the adventure begins....this is a story of a courageous woman who needs time to "find herself"
Rating: Summary: A wonderful road romance Review: First Lady is a feel-good read. This was my first SEP book and I will definitely buy more. Her writing has style, substance, and I can see why she is a consistent bestseller. Only a terrific writer could make a reader believe in some of the truly inbelievable moments in First Lady. But I did believe. I was completely hooked, and ready to follow Mat, Nealy, Lucy, and Button on the wildest of rides. Warm, funny, and always enjoyable. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Please Review: After reading several of her other books, I was happy when this came out. I bought it right away. As I was reading it, I realized I didn't feel for these characters as much as the other ones I've read. I thougt Matt was mean and hateful. I felt so sorry for the girls, but not the two main characters. Matt also came off to me as being stupid. Who picks up strangers this day and age? I also think its hard to feel sorry for Cornelia. I just wished I hadn't bought this book, but rather on of her other one instead.
Rating: Summary: A heroine's journey... Review: Someone a few reviews back complained about Avon authors loving each other's books - well, here's a Leisure author who absolutely adored SEP's latest work. Cornelia makes a wonderful and believable transformation from a woman who is controlled by her life as first lady, to a woman ultimately owns her life, her career, and her love. Mat takes a mirror transition, to realizing that caring for others is a joy and not a life sentence. SEP always gives her readers wonderful, realistic characters in unique settings, and First Lady lives up to that promise in every way. Here, the 'Hero's Journey' is a woman's, with all the beauty and glory of love as the greatest reward.
Rating: Summary: Not up to expectations Review: SEP is one of my favorite authors but I just couldn't "get into" this book. The plot was interesting but it turned out that the characters were not. I would rather re-read one of her earlier works. This one goes to the used bookstore.
Rating: Summary: A REALLY GOOD BOOK Review: IT HAVE BEEN A REALLY TIME SINCE I READ A BOOK IN ONE SITTING. I FALLEN IN LOVE WITH ALL OF THE FOUR MAIN PEOPLE IN THE BOOK. I JUST WISH THAT THE BOOK WAS DOUBLE THE SIZE. I LOVE A BOOK THAT CAN MAKE ME LAUGH AND CRY. AND THIS ONE REALLY DID BOTH FOR ME. I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SUSAN E. PHILLIPS NEXT BOOK. HOPE THAT IT JUST AS GOOD AS THIS ONE. I JUST NOT SURE I CAN WAIT UNTIL 2001
Rating: Summary: interesting story Review: In true SEP fashion, you have a guy who isn't much into "settling down". In fact, if you can get past his anger and his calling a baby "demon" all of the time you might actually like him. Obviously I didnt. But, the heroine is a First Lady with warmth who is also very naive. Interesting concept, nice ending. Like I said, worth reading if you can get past the hero.
