Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Please pass the garbage can Review: Can one give negative stars? If this book was written at the height of Mr. Smith's powers, I'd hate to see what he would write at the depth of his writing prowess. The book tends to grow on you, like a fungus. It's hard to put down at the same time that it's silly and stupid. Taita the eunuch slave out-renaissances Leonardo da Vinci. Excuse me, but he's a hard bit to swallow. Never heard of Pharaoh Mamose; he isn't listed in the book "Chronology of the Pharaohs" by Peter Clayton. However, since the book appears to be set in the Second Intermediate period, we may not be aware of all the names of men who claimed to be "pharaoh" during that period. Please, Mr. Smith, read the scientific literature on ancient Egypt to see what it was really like.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: my review Review: The invasion of the Hyksos with their mighty chariots and horses, defeats the might of the Egyptian Empire and forces its rulers to flee up the Nile. Many years pass before they are able to recover their force and learn new strategies. However, they do return and conquer part of their kingdom. This is a novel based on historical facts and written in such a beautiful way with places, people and situations that will keep you reading until the very last page. The way the author has chosen to write, basing his story in an account written by a slave, Taita, who devotes his life to his mistress, Queen Lostris and her children. Beautifully written, with every detail for every scene and character that will bring life to all this story. I recommend it.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Gag me with the Crook & Flail Review: I cannot believe all the glowing "reviews" of this piece of tripe. It appears Smith did his "research" by watching 1950's movies about Egypt. If anyone is truly interested in reading well-researched books about engrossing characters set in ancient Egypt, I would suggest you head to the search page and look up ANYthing by Pauline Gedge. Her latest opus, THE LORDS OF THE TWO LANDS (a three book masterpiece) should make Smith and his sycophants hang their heads in shame.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: "An Distinctive Masterpiece" Review: As an avid reader of Wilbur Smith's novels it is hardly surprising that he would surpass every expectation that one would have after reading previous perfections. A mystical and vibrant saga of eternal love entwined with the harsh complexities of war. The rise and fall of an empire, a brilliant combination of fiction and reality which brings the reader to a pinnacle moment of breathlessness. The characters are superficial yet preternaturally familiar. Taita's sharp wit, has the ability to captivate and inspire. The main plot is structured around Taita's mistress "Queen Lostris" who is majestic yet appealing to everyone from the esteemed Pharaoh to the humble slaves. The story takes piercing twists throughout the novel and leaves the reader in absolute awe!! Tanus' character is richly interwoven with that of a modern day Romeo and an ancient spellbinding connoisseur of the art of love. His loyalty and devotion to his Pharaoh is nothing short of admirable, A true "Braveheart". A brilliant book from the trilogy, A deffinate recommendation along with Seventh scroll and Warlock.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: Soapy Review: I was disappointed in this novel; I found it full of stock villains and too-perfect protagonists. Too many things happen at "just the precise moment" for them to be anywhere near believable. Too schlocky for my tastes.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Taita, my new friend Review: Taita became a family member and I missed him terribly when I finished River God. Then Warlock appeared on the bookself. I know I will feel as if I have been reunited with a dear friend. Smith weaves a web of love, hate, deception, devotion and all the stuff that makes life delicious. The characters will last a lifetime. Cheers to Smith who educates and entertains!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Taita is full of himself but I grew to love the character. Review: When I first started reading this book I disliked Taita because he thought so highly of himself. I nearly put the book aside! But boy am I glad I kept with it. Taita is without a doubt one of my all time favorite characters now! The story line is wonderful. The main characters are well thought out and are self motivated based on their own character development / quirks. Some of the sub-characters are a bit cookie-cutter but that doesn't detract from the pleasure of the story. Overall, I loved this book and now that I'm done reading it I find myself wanting more. Next is The 7th Scroll for sure.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: An excellent page turner Review: This is a beautiful book that sweeps you into the ancient land of Eygpt. Smith brings the characters to life in a plot that will keep you reading late ino the night to see the outcome. River God has everything, romance and action blended together to create an entertaining read. A must read for anyone who is interested in this fascinating civilization. If you liked this book read the Seventh Scroll, also by Wilbur Smith.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Excellent read. Great history lesson Review: Until this book, I had not really given much thought to reading fictional accounts of the ancient Egyptians. This was a great book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were well thought out and described. The story (as with all his books) was well put together and included plenty of detail describing the events and cricumstances of the day. I plan on getting the second book of the series very soon.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Wilbur Smith Rocks! Review: I completely enjoyed reading this book! I have read it over and over even though I usually do not enjoy re-reading novels! It is my favorite book so far and I am so anxious to start Warlock! My only complaint is that I cannot make the book a reality and live it! This was truly a work of art!
