Summary: Good rollicking fun along the nile
Review: I picked this book up randomly at the bookstore, and started reading. It was kind of cheesy, but fun, and slowly but surely drew me in... I started to like the characters. In fact, I started to like the book so much that I tried not to read it so that I could look forwards to the next chapter. I don't think I have done this with a book since "Dune"

Inevitably, the story drew to a close, and there are some depressing parts that could have been handled less depressingly. This, and the cheesiness factor (which it never truly leaves) take from it the fifth star

Summary: Loved It
Review: After reading Birds of Prey, I had to continue to another book by this great storyteller. River God didn't let me down. Interesting characters and non-stop action. Can't wait to get to the sequel!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Bad history; Great fiction
Review: One can quibble about the historical innacuracies in Smith's The River God and be a bit put off by the the lead character's propensity to be smarter than anyone else in the story, but really - is this a great story, or what? A departure for Smith, whose previous books focused almost exclusively on his native South Africa, this book deals with Egypt 4000 ago. But as typical of his novels, this one speeds along with great action and wonderful characters.

Taita, the brilliant eunuch slave who narrates the story, is an inspired creation. Larger than life while being, as a eunuch, somewhat removed from the passions that move many of the characters in the book, he is the perfect spectator/participant. He sees and understands everything and his inventions and interventions move the plot in unexpected ways. The book meanders a bit because it follows a whole life and its many turnings, but it is fascinating at every juncture.

This simply is one of the most FUN books I have read in years. Being transported to an unfamiliar time and place, and having that milieu come alive so vividly - to be able to vicariously experience the rise and fall of pharohs, cities, kingdoms, suffering and success - this is the best kind of vacation from the ordinary world we inhabit.

I highly recommend this book. It is intelligent, exciting, creative and memorable. What more could one want?

Summary: Amazing journey
Review: Do not read this book if you don't have the time to be transported to another time, another place. Wilbur Smith is the master of placing his reader in his books. You feel like you are living the book with the characters. Taita is the slave/narrator and he draws you in with his narrative. You live life with Taita and his mistress and her lover, Tanus. The book is filled with history and humor and thrilling battles and the life of ancient Egypt. It's very good. What makes it even better is...no I can't tell you. Read it yourself. Remember, this book takes a big commitment of time. But it is time well spent.

Summary: Believe the hype!
Review: This book had made it to my "top 10 all time favorites"... it will really move you. It SHOULD move you, if you're in touch with humanity. A veritable roller-coaster of emotions, it's a wonderful trip. Enjoy the ride! (The "sequel", The Seventh Scroll, I would rate 4 stars and very much worth reading, but doesn't have the emotional impact of this story.)

Summary: 'River God's' da bomb!
Review: I've said this so many times before: I love this book so much. It's my ultimate favorite. It's so thrilling and after reading it, I got a feeling of, "Oh....Wowwwwwww! " It's great. Truthfully though, I have NOT read the whole thing! It's so annoying....I saw a copy of it in a library before, read it (but unfortunately, I haven't read the whole thing), and then fell in LOVE with it. This is so great.....I intend to buy my own personal copy soon. I mean, it's good enough to own it (I only buy books sometimes, you see, which is why I have made this statement). No...it's not just good....it's extraordinary and simply enticing and wonderful! I looooooooove the character of Memnon/Tamose. He sounds like such a brave, strong, and handsome man. Such a wonderful character that Wilbur Smith created.......;))))))))) <--(big smile) Ahem. I first heard about 'River God' from a friend of mine who is an aspiring egyptologist and some weeks (or months?) later, I found it. Now, I love it so much. (well, i'm not really an egyptologist or egypt expert or something but my interest in Egypt started a few months ago because of a certain movie i saw....'The Prince of Egypt') I also saw 'The Seventh Scroll' but I love RG even more. 7th Scroll is BORING! I mean, it's already set in MODERN egypt but i prefer ancient egypt since it's something i don't experience everyday! how annoying! and i thought that 7thS was going to follow up on Memnon's life as a pharaoh! BUT still.....SS is wonderfully written, no doubt. In conclusion, I'd like to say that Smith is a great author! He is so descriptive and his descriptions make me MELT! GO WILBUR SMITH! And.....'River God' forever!

Summary: This book could be alive!
Review: Prior to reading River God I had never before picked up a Wilbur Smith book. Four bleary eyed days later I placed down without doubt THE best novel that I had ever read. Wilbur Smith's descriptive powers take you from the comfort of your reading place to the heart of ancient civilisation. You can tell that this book was a labour of love for the author. I read this book in 1995 and can still see the colours and hear the sounds in my head. Only fellow readers will truly appreciate these comments. Buy it.

Summary: This Book is the greatest!
Review: This book is one of the best historical fiction books about Egypt I've read! I'm quite the Egypt fanatic and this book is great. It sometimes goes into detail too much...but hey it still good! I recomend this book and it's sequal to every one!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: A magnificent waste of time
Review: Although Wilbur Smith's story and characters have only an incidental connection with classical Egyptian culture and the flimsiest attachment to what little is known of that period, and the characters' motives and manner are impossibly modern in inspiration, I loved River God. Read, enjoy, but do NOT take it seriously.

This warning goes double for the sequel, The Seventh Scroll. It was even loonier, I enjoyed it even more.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: One of the best.
Review: I am what you might call, a "reader". I read on many different subject. Fiction and Non-fiction. My sister gave me this book and suggested I move it to the top of my list of books to read. So, I sat down on the couch, one sunday, to start River God and ended up reading the entire book in one sitting. I have done this only twice in my life. This book is outstanding.
