Summary: Greatest Story Ever
Review: This is perhaps the most fantastic and touching story i have ever read in my life. While i was reading i was hoping the whole time never to reach the midway part bc then i knew that i was on my way to being done. I could never put it down, it was always calling to me, the characters were calling, i had to find out what was going on in Egypt at the time how they would fare in their next obsticle. When i had finished the book, i had felt that there had been so much taken away from me. I felt like something was missing from me. I have never felt the way after reading a book as i have after this one. Then i heard there was a sequel, but it takes place 4000 years in the future. I am a bit skepticle to read it besides its great reviews, bc i fear that it won't stand up to its predecessor. I yearn to discover what becomes of Mem and Taita and Egypt in te future, i so want to be part of it again, i want Wilbur to write another sequel which takes place back in egypt so that the scorching of my heart can be cool with the waters of the Infant nile one again.

Summary: Exciting, descriptive, romantic, tragic....
Review: I loved River God. It was so beautiful. I felt like I could close my eyes and be in ancient Egypt. The smells, the emotions, the scenery, they were all described to perfection. Even though everyone found Taita pompous, I thought he was incredibly brave and noble. I wish he was real and living. Lostris was actually the one who annoyed me. Why wouldn't she be with him if she really loved him?

Summary: RIVER GOD
Review: I HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED WILBUR SMITHS BOOKS AS A GREAT HOLIDAY READ BUT THIS WAS SO OVER EXPLAINED AND UNBELEIVABLE AS TO BE PAINFUL TO READ.I REALISE THIS WAS TO TEMPT US INTO BELEIVING THAT MYTH MIGHT BE TRUTH BUT THE STORY LINE WAS SO LABOURED IT LOST MY INTEREST.

Summary: Entertaining
Review: This book does hold your attention, it has lots of action and excitement, even if it was sort of predictable. If you like reading adventures stories about talented, beautiful people as heroes, with clear cut good guys and bad guys, then this book is for you. I had a lot of trouble relating to all of the characters, and Taita's relationship with Lostris really seemed like the only relationship that held any reality for me. Taita was immensely talented for a slave, and he lets you know it every other paragraph, between talking about his beauty and worrying about his figure. But I'm complaining a lot. All in all this book was an exciting adventure story.

Summary: An incredible Egyptian story
Review: This story gives great detail of the Egyptian history and culture, even though the story itself is fictional. The best part of the story is being the mind of the slave Taita. If you admire the Egyptian culure, then this book is a must.

Summary: River God Rules
Review: The River God is 'THE' best book I have ever read. It is the most descriptive and capitavating books that once you start to read, you just cannot put it down. It really takes you back to ancient Egypt, and makes you feel as though you are living in the same era as the great Pharaoh's. Even while I was at work, all I could think about was getting back to Egypt and reading more about the lives of so many interesting people. This book is action packed, and the most descriptive details of an ancicent kingdom. Once you have done yourself a favour and read this book, read the sequel "The Seventh Scroll". This isn't quite as good as the River God but once you read this book you will want to read all you can about Egypt, and the slave "Taita". A MUST READ!

Summary: gripping
Review: I have read quite a lot of books about ancient Egypt, by different authors, and although this one is not always precise on a historical point of view, I find it the most gripping, colourful and adventurous I have read. If you're not especially interested in Ancient Egypt but want to give it a try, this is the one you should pick. The caracters, the customs, the colours, the land and everything, are wonderfully described, you can almost smell the perfumes ...

Summary: nmc's opinion of River God
Review: River God is one the best books that I have ever read. It is a wonderful example of the imagination of Wilbur Smith. I have read three of his books so far, including the sequel to River God, and River God is the best of the three. The book is a combination of love, fear, desperation, leadership, and triumph. The main plot is the love between Lostris, the wife of the Pharoah of Egypt, and Tanus, a commander of an army of Pharoah and a trusted friend of the narrator. The story is told from the perspective of a lowly, yet loved and respected slave named Taita. His mistress is coincidentaly Lostris and he helps to maintain the love between her and Tanus. All through the book, the two lovers try to secretly share their love. The story goes on through battles not only between nations but between individuals. It is not only another "love conquers all" book with mushy, romantic love scenes, but is also a book that offers a historical perspective of ancient Egypt. It is obvious throughout the novel that the author went to great lengths to research the topic and make it sound so truthful you would think it wasn't fiction. One of the best aspects was that it held my interest more than any other book that I have ever read. I was not able to put it down. Wilbur Smith is an expert at making the reader seem that he or she is actually a character in the book. The emotions of the characters were explained wonderfully with the use of metaphors and similes. They were portrayed throughout the novel and it was as though I was actually there seeing the battles and landscape and experiencing the love and hate. I laughed and cried and just plain thouroughly enjoyed the entire book. I strongly recommend it for anyone old enough to handle detailed war scenes and love scenes.

Summary: A magnificent epic of a time long gone
Review: Smith is an incredibly gifted writer -- indeed, I place his action stories on the same level as those of Edward S. Aarons. RIVER GOD is extraordinary in its narration, characters, plot, and scenery -- all of which come together to make a book that is very much perfect for reading and rereading. Indeed, the blending of such factors causes the story to remain with you even after you have set the book aside.

Summary: not his best but far far from his worst......
Review: First person fiction is not Wilbur Smiths' strong suit, but in a Smith novel, you hardly notice that with the usual break-neck pace of the action. A reader hoping for insights into ancient Egypt will be disappointed, for Smith is not a historical writer and does pretend to be. What he does deliver, (as always), is rapid paced action packed story. No book by this author is disappointing, a bad Smith is better than 99% of the other novelists working today. The major disappointment here is the main character, Taita, who comes across as a arrogant know-it-all, by far the least sympathic main character Smith has ever written. (At times, you wish someone would chain this guy hand and foot and throw his butt to the crocs! ) Despite this, "River God" is an excellent read and recommended to anyone who likes a cracking good story.....
