Summary: Anne McCaffrey's new series is pure enjoyment
Review: On Vega III, Lady Nimisha Boynton-Rondymense has lived an indulged life as befitting the daughter of Lord Tionel, owner of the Rondymense ship yards. Though Nimisha had just about everything she wants growing up, she enjoyed taking apart and rebuilding mechanical and robotic items. However, her idyllic existence abruptly ends when her father suddenly dies.

To the shock of everyone, Nimisha takes charge of the family business, but most people accept the change in leadership. That is except Lord Vestin, who expected to inherit the ship yards. Nimisha continues to succeed with experimental models until a test flight goes astray, stranding her light-years from her home. Vestin, encouraged by his mother, sees the opportunity to obtain what he feel has always been rightfully his. All he has to is eliminate Nimisha's daughter, a chip off the old block.

NIMISHA'S SHIPS is the opening novel in Anne McCaffrey's new science fiction series. The exciting story line has the usual McCaffrey thread of non-stop action running through it. Though Nimisha is a splendid lead protagonist, the villains do not come across as dangerous as readers expect from the Mistress of Pern. Still, a science fiction novel by the incompatible Ms. McCaffrey is always a winning treat and readers will relish and crave the next book.

Summary: disappointed
Review: The plot is written for a 12 year old. None of the usual intrigue found in her works. No creative environments.

Summary: Nimisha's Ship
Review: The usual quality book you can expect from Anne McCaffrey. Good story line, action, diversity of charaters, and a begining to a new world. Ann McCaffrey always provides a good read with out resorting to the violence and sex in most books on the market.

Summary: Neat story idea, lousy book
Review: This book follows the trend of Nerilka's Story (a more recent Pern book) in that it is more of a writer's notebook than a completed novel. As usual, McCaffrey has designed a unique set of planetary and social systems and peopled them with potentially intriguing characters. Unlike her earlier works, this book reads like a rough draft. The pacing and time transitions are particularily rough in the first half, and several prominent characters become mere shadows by the second half (without resolution of their story lines). If you're a McCaffrey fan, read it for the ideas (and fill in the blanks yourself). If you haven't read McCaffrey before, don't start here; head for the Pern books.

Summary: Entertaining, but not McCaffrey's best work
Review: This is definitely not the best book that Anne McCaffrey has written, but it is also not so bad that I would not continue to call myself a fan of her work.

It is true that this book has some elements which have probably already been seen by fans of science fiction in general and/or of Anne McCaffrey's previous work. The element of being stranded lightyears from home and of having the AI doctor is reiminscent of Star Trek: Voyager. The dangerous animals and mystery on the new planet will put you in mind of McCaffrey's "Freedom" series.

The book was hard for me to get into at first. I get tripped up with the long names that Anne tends to use for characters and in figuring out the full extent of the society and in remembering who is who. But soon it gets much easier and you do start to care for the characters and about the outcome of the story. I'm probably too easily moved to tears, but there were occasions in the book that made me have to dry my eyes.

I agree that the artwork on the hardcover edition is horrible. The artwork on the paperback is also somewhat disappointing--I would have liked to see Nimisha's tattoo and necklace or just something more intriguing than half a woman's face. Both covers were so different from each other too that I didn't realize I already had the book when a friend gave me the paperback of it.

I'm not disappointed that I read this book, but it wasn't a page turner like the Dragonriders series, or the Power series was for me. But it is well written and enjoyable and will do well to transport you from your own world whenever you open its cover.

Summary: A pleasing read...
Review: This was my first contact with Ms. McCaffrey's works. I have seen her on the shelf for years, but have passed her fantasies by for more sci-fi fare. This story started out with all the potential of a great yarn, but somewhere beyond half way, it lost the tension. Though a nice story to the end, the drama seemed to be lost and awaited dangers and a denouement never appeared. Perhaps this story has a sequel waiting in the wings where the villain waits.

Summary: I loved this book
Review: This was my second McCaffrey book. And I must say I thuroughly enjoyed it. I found myself being at one with the characters. Though i would have liked to have read more after it ended, I found it enjoyable.

Summary: Very good read! Would reccommend this to others.
Review: To jbandsma & reader from Mich,USA(by the way--are you a troll?), I must disagree. For one thing, Nimisha did not chose where she landed, but she made the most of her opportunities. To say that she gave up everything to stay is wrong. She had accomplished her goals and was ready to do something bigger & better. A planet to mold and help grow---WOW!

Summary: Vintage McCaffrey
Review: We have come to expect strong females from McCaffrey. Nimisha and her daughter Cuiva are two more to add to the legion. Unlike most of her heroines Nimisha and Cuiva are technophiles, prodigys in engineering, space ship design, electronics, robotics etc. Thats the rub, the cause of the troubles these women face and the begining of the adventure. They resolve their immediate problems, but, like in the dragonrider, dragonsinger, crystal singer, freedom and yes Collura books you are left waiting for the sequal. How soon Anne?

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Boring!
Review: When I saw the new McAfferey book I had to have it, what a total waste of money. Absolutely nothing happened, no suspense, no romance, no sinister plots, no friendly mythical creatures, NOTHING! Please do not waste your money on this dud.
