Rating: Summary: My favorite of the Earth's Children Series Review: Ayla's development is revealed to her as it is to the reader. She becomes the person she will be throughout her series of ongoing adventures/ life.
Rating: Summary: I remember, I remember! Review: The best thing about this book (and the ones that follow in the series) is that it continues the engrossing story of the beloved main character of "The Clan of the Cave Bear". The worst thing is that the author sees fit to recap a great deal in each subsequent book, perhaps because there were long breaks (multiple years) between the publications of each addition. For readers like myself, however, who are reading the series back-to-back (and in a matter of a few weeks) this distracting habit goes from being slightly irksome while reading book #2 ("Valley of Horses"), where you get the first recapping, to downright annoying by book #4 ("Plains of Passage"), where you've read recaps of something you read two weeks ago three more times. Notice, however, that it didn't stop me from reading every one!! They are still a good read and I'll happy sift through the 5th recap of "Clan" if she produces another book.
Rating: Summary: My Fave- A wonderful story Review: The Valley of Horses, by Jean M. Auel is a wonderful story of love, survival, and incredible fate. Ms. Auel crafts the landscape, society, and feelings of prehistoric times with incredible skill and precision, as she does in her other three novels of the same series. I first picked up VoH when I was 12. The feats of Ayla, the herione made (and make) me feel capable of anything. Auel has created a role model for women everywhere. And yes, the books DO include sex. I don't skip the scenes, nor do I pore over them. Sex is as natural as the air we breathe, and to not include it a book that otherwise decribes every aspect of a culture would simply not do the book justice. This book is well written, and more importantly, holds the reader's intrest. No other book written about prehistory is more captivating. The Valley of Horses will always remain number one in my heart.Sarah Hershman
Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: I loved this book! It was a great sequel to "Clan of The Cave Bear". I loved the part were she learned to "talk" to animals and tamed the cave lion and the horse. This was such a great book that I'm reading the sequel to the "Valley of the Horses", "The Mammoth Hunters". "Valley of the Horses" captivated me for hours at a time, I could not put this book down! I stayed up till 2:oo AM reading this wounderful book! I would recomend this book to people who love to read fasinating love and survival novels.
Rating: Summary: Superb! Review: I first read the Earth's Children series when I was in about seventh grade, while looking in a used book store for a book to do a report on. At first, I could not put Valley of Horses down, it compelled me! And I freely admit, I am a frustrating reader. I skipped every chapter with Jondalar and Thonolan, until of course, Jondalar and Ayla met, and then went back and skimmed. Even though I virtually (and literally) hacked my way through the book, Auel kept me enthralled. I couldn't leave it alone. Then came the sex. I must admit, at thirteen years old, I was completely apalled that someone would have the gall to write such ilicite materiel. I skipped the sections, and completely missed out on the meaning of Ayla's awakening. It wasn't until three years down the road, as a junior, that I found a replacement for my decapitated Valley of Horses. This time, I actually read from page one to the end without bouncing around, or skipping. I think it took being older, a mature mind, and the knowlege of the power of sexual relations between two people in love to truly appreciate Auel's masterpiece. And it wasn't just the story and the sex that kept me into the book. It was the excellent insider view into the life of a prehistoric person. I could see myself walking on the beach with Ayla, digging pits to trap horses, and sitting next to Jondalar, watching him knap flint. Auel has researched so much; from botany, to hunting, to skills of the Ice Age that it isn't hard to accept something thirty five thousand years behind us. I would encourage people to read this book, if you don't, you're missing out on a real treat.
Rating: Summary: The Valley of Horses Review: I've read all the books in the series, and I can't wait for her next book. This book was captivating I could'nt put it down. You felt like you were taken back in time I was so taken by this story. I've read other book of this period, but these are by far the best. I LOVED THEM. I do however, agree with the other reviewer from the USA, sex is an important part of who Ayla is,and I think, the woman that her charater is evolving into. Sex is a beautiful thing. It's a natural part of life. Don't let the sex in this story keep you from enjoying a wonderfully, wonderfully compelling series. 5 STARS.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books i have read, ever! Review: I have read both this and the first book in the series and they were really great- i could hardly put them down! The language was really descriptive and the author has managed to make you feel like you are living at that time. A great read which i would recommend to everyone!
Rating: Summary: Good but repetitive Review: I realy enjoyed the first book and enjoyed this one as well. My only regret is that it is sooooo repetitive. I realy got tired of hearing Ayla's ideas of where babies come from. I have read the entire series and firmly believe that if the author took out all the repitition it would turn out to be TWO very compelling and enjoyable books. I hope the author takes into consideration this recurring complaint from her readers and keeps the flashbacks to a minimum on her next endevour. I eagerly await her next book.
Rating: Summary: If you like Ayla, read it! Review: All you hooked up on Ayla in first book will enjoy this one.But while in the first book was all new and suprising, here most of the book are Ayla's memories as if the autor thought you never read the first one.But it's still a great, great book and I highly recomand it.
Rating: Summary: Valley of the Horses Review: Lovley prehistoric story. The survivial of this prehistoric woman,Ayla and her rescuing of Jondalar is quite amaizing,I have read similar time peroid books but none left me wanting more and more as this one did.It is a great story, truly one of the top books or set of books of the decade.Have not read her first,Clan of the Cave Bear, but this one ond her following books are so discriptive that one is actually transported back to this time.My only hang up,with this book, well tis is my problem with other authors, the sex was too explicit, hey,I like it as much as the next person, but at times, because it was so vivid,it blured the story.I hope that Miz Auel continues writing this saga and tells us what happens to Jondalar and Ayla when they return to Jondalar's people.
