Rating: Summary: destined to be a classic in childrens' literature Review: After unsuccesfully trying to resist the Harry Potter mania for a while, I finally gave up & bought the first book in the series: After reading "Harry Potter & the sorcerer's stone" (or "the philosopher's stone", as it came out in the UK) for about 5 hours nonstop, I realised what all the fuss was about...J.K. Rowling brings back memories of C.S. Lewis, Roald Dahl, & also those old-fashioned but brilliant books about life & adventures in english boarding houses. A "struggling single mother" (as the book cover mentions) turns out to be a great talent, & the Harry Potter books are destined to become children classics. The first book in the series was not only exciting & extremely imaginative. It was, most importantly, very very funny, & all in all, a rare treat.
Rating: Summary: A classic, buy it in hardcover because it will be well-worn Review: After we started reading "Harry Potter and The Socerer's Stone" my daughter (age 6)instituted a new night time pattern-one night "Harry" the next three stories when I asked her why she didn't want to read Harry every night she said "On Harry nights I try so hard to stay awake and listen, on three story nights I know it's ok to fall asleep." I admit that on the last "Harry" night I stayed up and read the whole book and loved it. It may be a little scary for the younger ones but a GREAT read for ANY age!
Rating: Summary: Woweee... Review: After wondering what the big fuss was all about, I went and picked up a copy for myself...and I must say I'm quite impressed! Even for a very discriminating longtime fantasy fan like myself. Hey, I haven't even reached the very ending yet, but I am still quite swept away by J.K. Rowling's very wild and colorful imagination despite the much simpler sentence structure and lower vocabulary level obviously intended for the younger audience. Harry Potter's very first adventures all begun when wizards all over a hum-drum English town suddenly began celebrating joyously at the very news of a baby being saved from an evil warlock's deadly clutches. Unfortunately, the innocent little boy had to be placed with a rigidly conservative family who didn't want anything to do with anything out of the ordinary. So for the next ten years, Harry had to live in the shadow of Dudley, a very selfish, overcoddled brat of the pig-headed Mr. Dursley and the prissy Mrs. Dursley. But his unhappy life suddenly takes a very unexpected turn when a mysterious letter came through the mail slot - addressed to HIM! So Harry finds himself a celebrated young hero being groomed for his enrollment at a very special wizarding school! Now Harry has lots of friends, good food to eat, and very hair-raising adventures in the dark halls of the great castle where he now lives and studies! But that's not all...Harry Potter is suddenly faced with a whole army of enemies ranging from an arrogant classmate to a mean old teacher to a HUGE three-faced monster guarding a very secret treasure that he himself must uncover! A very wacky roller-coaster ride through Harry Potter's startling experiences that all kids can very easily relate to, like the very first days of school and dealing with cruel relatives who don't really love you at all as well as the even crazier parts of life in fantasyland such as a bank ran by goblins, a dormitory haunted by ghosts, candies full of trading cards, a talking sorcerer's hat, and a wizardy version of a basketball game where the players all ride on broomsticks! Very rollicking indeed!
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Story for Kids and Adults Alike Review: After years of hearing about the Harry Potter craze, I recently decided to surrender my stubborness and read this first book. Actually I read it after recommendations, not only from those younger than me, but even my mother was urging me to give Book One a chance. I am a college student, and in finding a space of free time in my schedule to read about something other than my usual texts, I decided to take a break and see what all of the fuss was about. At first this story seemed to remind me of Roald Dahl's "James and the Giant Peach," which I read back in the Dark Ages (elementary school). In no time at all I was absorbed into the book, flipping pages as quickly as I normally do with my favorite novels. Rowling's characters are may appear cliche at first (the hero, the villain, the bully, the best friends, the trusted advisors etc), but as the story progresses you can not see them NOT playing roles in the plot development. Each one has interesting attributes, and are entertaining to watch as the story smoothly moves along. It's a story involving many themes: it's a mystery, a coming of age story, at some points suspense, and at some points comical! For being listed as a children's book, it has plot twists that could even surprise an avid reader. I wish I could describe how wonderfully creative this book is, but honestly I can not find the correct words. After years of reading more "sophisticated" books, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" was able to unlock my imagination and bring me back to a time when reading truly created worlds unfathomable to those accustomed to analyzing literature. (... If) you are thinking about buying this book or are just curious to see what the "Harry Potter Craze" is all about, I urge you to buy this book. If (like me) you remember a time when you enjoyed setting your imagination free and reading books as children, buy this book. It's rather inexpensive, maybe not compared to other children's books but definitely in comparison to others on bestseller lists (...). This may be a book initially written for children, but with its exciting plot and beautifully descriptive characters and images, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" is definitely a story adults can cherish.

In this school he has oppurtunities to play sports and hang out with friends, but his Aunt and Uncle won't let him go to this school. So he has to run away to attend this new and interesting School.
