Rating: Summary: Harry's spell didn't work for me Review: I finally read this book, and what I found out was this book was one of the most overrated books I've ever read. The story was mediocre, I have no idea why most of the reviewers love this book. Furthermore, the main characters were dull. You find no one who is attractive, as you do when you're reading "Gone with the wind" by Margaret Michell. So I figured out this book must be for children. If I were 9, I might like this book. But I am 23, and I prefer books which are more profound. Try "The Satanic Mill" by Otfried Preussler. This masterpiece has got a ridiculous English title (the original title is 'Krabat'), but "The Satanic Mill" is the best fantasy I've ever read so far.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: I find the Harry Potter books fascinating. I have always had a wonderful imagination and still do at 25. I have always been an avid reader and heard mention on the radio about some of the controversy surrounding the books. So naturally, my curiousity was fueled and I was out purchasing the book that evening, I finished it soon thereafter and purchased the 2nd and 3rd book immediately. If anyone thinks these books could desensitize children or corrupt them, then they are truly wrong and should not pass judgement until they have actually read the books. It fuels a childs imagination which seems to be deteriorating over time, parents should be happy to see their child reading a book. Do people think that the 'Wizard of Oz' books are evil? desensitizing? or corruptive? NOT ME! I have the whole collection. Come on get w/the program dust off your imagination people! Come be a child w/dreams again. While your doing that, I am off to read #4...may take awhile. =)
Rating: Summary: a story for everyone Review: I finish this book over the weekend. What I will say is: thisis not just a child's book, but a book for people at any age.
You should be impressed by the courage of Harry, Ron's faith to friends and Hermione's cleverness. The main characters are not perfect. Harry does lost once in his desire to see his dead parents. Hermione is an annoying character at the beginning, but becomes such a nice girl eventually. Ron is shy before and becomes brave after he becomes real friends with Harry. The book emphasizes love, friendship and team work which refreshing all city people's mind when we are lost in the society emphasizing personal achievement and competition. Through the adventures, you see how our little heroes/heroines changes into more mature models and that makes the story more vivid and fun to read. Harry, Ron and Hermione seems to be my friends now. I am looking forward to see what happens to them in book 2, 3 and 4.

Rating: Summary: "Harry Potter" is a great book for wizards AND Muggles alike Review: I first became aware of the Harry Potter series upon the release of the third book. I had learned about Muggles and wizardry, but I did not read the books. They seemed like all the other children's book crazes, such as Goosebumps, The Babysitters Club, etc, that have a brilliant few years of popularity and die out from overexposure. Therefore, I didn't pay it much mind. Boy, was I an bloomin' idiot. This book is a triumph. Why? It is a book that adults enjoy on the same level as the kids. This places the movie adaptation in "Star Wars" territory. Meaning that it's a story that transcends all age groups, races, and sexes. Harry Potter is like a boy Cinderella. He has a miserable life until his Prince Charming comes, namely an eight foot, bearded giant, named Hagrid, with an invite for Harry to attend an infamous wizard's school. This book is like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "The Wizard of Oz" rolled up into one. It has the wonder and innocence of the former, and the magic and adventure of the latter. J.K. Rowling has herself a franchise that has more than just "legs." (An entertainment industry term for "sustained popularity.") It has the potential to rival some of the most popular cultural pieces of modern literature in terms of social relevance. It is well written, great fun to read, and it makes you want to purchase the next book right away. Adults, buy it for your kid, and then read it yourself. It's a very entertaining book.
Rating: Summary: Great book that is very addictive Review: I first bought Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone because I wanted to see what the big deal with the series was. I soon found out: I began reading this book at every chance I had. After finishing, I enjoyed it so much that I went out and bought the second book immediately. The book has very interesting, colorful characters, although sometimes they are slightly childish (Dudley comes to mind). The plot is surprisingly interesting for a "children's" book. There were parts that were a little childish for me, but they in no way halted my enjoyment of this book.
Rating: Summary: An awesome book! Review: I first bought Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for my 11 year-old granddaughter for Christmas, 1999. (I am a intermediate multi-age teacher with 39 years of experience.) I had read the hype and decided that it sounded like my kind of book. By the day after Christmas, Elise had finished the book so I picked it up to read. I finished sometime the next night. Both of us (intergenerational) loved the magic and excitement. I bought the other two books that next week. Elise again finished them before her vacation was over. Unfortunately, the books went home with her before I could finish them. Since my granddaughter and I had both enjoyed them, I introduced Harry and the Sorcerer's Stone to my class during Read-aloud. Every student in my multi-age intermediate class has loved the exploits of Harry and his friends at Hogworts. The interest has generated a flurry of book buying.....most students have book 1 and several have purchased the sequels. They cannnot wait for DEAR time when their imaginations can soar with Harry. To see children eagerly asking for extra time to read, as a teacher, I say, "Thank you, J.K. Rowling." Personally, I cannot wait for the next installment!
Rating: Summary: My daughter and I loved it! Review: I first bought the paperback version of this to read to see if it would be acceptable for my 9 year old. I couldn't put it down. The paperback version was passed along and I bought the hardback for my daughter for Christmas. We began reading it together at bedtime. She couldn't get enough.. begging me to read 'just one more chapter' each night, often I would agree just because I wanted to keep reading it as well. We have already finished the book and are awaiting the next two that we just ordered. I am sure we will be done with the entire series in record time. The characters and the suspense are both interesting and intriguing for children and yet keep an adult extremely interested and just as eager for more as the child.
Rating: Summary: Finally a book for the entire family. Review: I first bought this book due to the asking of my 8 year old cousin. I hadnt heard much about the series and was truly interested. Of course, I read the book, in a day and was truly fascinated with the tale. Luckily enough for me, I had bought this first book when the other books were already out so I didnt have to wait long to read the sequels. So far I have loved them all and have bought them as gifts for all my younger cousins and godchildren. I see no evilness in these books as some people say. They are simply about a boy who is looking for something better in his life, and he is given it. I think the agony he goes through living with his Aunt and Uncle are more troublesome, more devestating to youngsters than his trials at the wizardly school. People who demean this book and the rest of the series, stating it is Satanic or whatnot, are simply looking for something to complain about. I teach high school, and I am making my 9th grade class read the series...it may seem a little young for their tastes but they are enjoying it, just as I did. It is simply a series for the entire family, with no evilness intended. I will continue to share the world of Harry Potter with my family, friends and students, for as long as possible. Everyone has a fantasy - a dream, and Harry Potters was fullfilled. He is living the life he so dreamed of living, and I see nothing wrong with that. The fact that he has to battle *demons* is something we do everyday, only they are portrayed so realistically, although they do much more damage. This is...as I said earlier...just a wonderful family book - series. I would recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Book! Review: I first encountered the book at a bookstore but I did not bothered about it. Not until some of my friends started reading it. So, I borrowed the book and began reading it. It was marvellous! If you had read Enid Blytons's Malory Towers Series, you will note some similarities but to me, I think that Harry Porter is much more interesting. It's nice to see how J.K. Rowling manage to put a little twist throughout the story. Certainly, one of the best book I had ever encountered. Marvellous piece of work....
