Rating: Summary: Rowling continues to grow as a storyteller Review: Well, I tore through this book in two days and found it to be another excellent example of the storytelling talents of J.K. Rowling. The only criticism I had of the first three books was that the dark characters that provide Harry with his challenges were undeveloped caricatures, notably Draco Malfoy and Lord Voldemort. This volume takes great strides in developing the villains. The series also continues to develop as great mysteries. The clues are fairly planted throughout the book and kids will love the continued attention to detail. I am an English teacher and aware of the challenges against this series...and while this installment is certainly darker, and will be sure to provide ammunition for those who search desperatly for it, I still think it is a magical series that opens the eyes of children to the joys of reading and the fun of fantasy literature.
Rating: Summary: A great sequel Review: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was an excellent sequel tothe previous books in the series. It was full of twists and turns andmany surprises to keep the reader turning the pages as quickly as they could to see what danger awaited Harry in his fourth year at Hogwarts. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and am sure that any Harry Potter fan will also.
Rating: Summary: A Sequel That Has It All! Review: I just bought this book, 2 days ago, the day it came out, and I've already read it! I love it, along with the other three Harry Potter books. Anyone who read (and liked) those books definetly needs to pick up The Goblet of Fire. This is a book anyone can enjoy, from age 8 to 88, no one can resist Harry Potter! I reccomend the whole series to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy/magical/mystery book.
Rating: Summary: Great fantasy! dark and funny Review: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is excellent! It is darker than the prior three books, but also extremely funny. I particularly liked the relationships between the students as they face many challenges ranging from dragons to the big dance. It may be too dark and too long for some younger readers; but I thought it was great!
Rating: Summary: A very nice book Review: I was somewhat worried that after all the hype, the authorwould just rest on her laurels for the rest of the series, but Gobletof Fire proved me wrong. It continues the series nicely, building suspense. I quite enjoyed it. Someone did die, but I still was happy with the ending, and am not terribly heartbroken. Also I was worried that Harry Potter dealing with girls would be incredibly stupid, spending pages while main characters stumbled around members of the opposite sex, making complete fools of themselves (I've seen it done in too many books before). Fortunately, I needn't have worried. The part of the book was a very quiet and subtle subplot that you could ignore easily, and didn't intrude on your reading. All in all, this was a great book, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Oh, and three cheers for Sirius, my favorite character! (no, my favorite isn't Harry)
Rating: Summary: Rowling does it again! Review: Once more, J.K. Rowling has pulled us into her fascinating world of wizardry. The hype leading up to the release of this fourth installment ensured a high hurdle of expectations to clear for Rowling. Not only does she clear it, but she soars above it on a Firebolt 2000.This book is filled with all the delightful anecdotes of Hogwarts life and characters that we've come to expect. More dangerous creatures, useful spells and perilous potions abound as our friends move through their fourth year. This year is highlighted by the Tri-Wizard Tournament - a tournament between rival wizarding schools, that is being held for the first time in over a hundred years following its cancellation due to a growing death toll. The plot is liberally sprinkled with hints of a second coming for You-Know-Who which, combined with top-notch tournament action and the gloriously detailed Hogwarts setting, makes for a hold-your-breath-till-the-end-if-you-can story. What will happen to Harry and his friends? You'll have to read it for yourself, but I promise you, you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: A Must Have Book Review: As with past Harry Potter books this one is full of adventurewith anticipation around every corner. But don't skip to the endThere will be great adeventure in getting there!
Rating: Summary: Is anyone as dissappointed as I was? Review: It seems to me this book could have used less secrecy and moreediting. The book is a hard read for an adult I can't imagine what itwill be like for the youth that it is supposed to be written for. The heavy use of English phrases makes some parts of the books unreadable for the average American. This is also the first time that Rowling has made an effort to date what could have been a timeless classic with references to playstations and such. Finally as a parent I was dissappointed for her efforts to make a "cool" character with long hair and an earing. I didn't mind the fanciful witches and wizards but this isn't the role model I want for my kids. I think it is too bad Rowling didn't just continue with the formula for success she had going for her. Maybe there will be enough backlash that the publisher will do a second edition that matches the quality of the first three books in the series. I know that I won't be in as big of a rush to buy book 5.
Rating: Summary: Another good read by J.K. Rowling. Review: The Harry Potter series weren't of much interest to me atfirst, but... WOW! They're so well written for kids books. Although, the biggest draw for me is that they remind me very much of my own days in junior high. Also, the characters are so easy to relate to. They're like real people. I think that's what REALLY makes these books so outstanding. I noticed a more "adult" humor peeking through this time, but I wanted to attribute it to the fact that Harry and his friends are now teenagers. ;-) And I did also miss Harry playing Quidditch in this book, but some of the other things more than made up for it. There weren't any parts of this book that particularly dragged, which was amazing considering its length. I'm looking forward to the next episode of Harry, Ron & Hermione's adventures. I can't wait to find out exactly what they did over summer break!
Rating: Summary: Simply Magnificent! Review: Ms. Rowling just seems to get better and better. For months Ihave been telling people about the Harry Potter series. It is, truly, the most enjoyable one I have ever read, and now the fourth book appears...and surpasses all of the others! Her development of the characters is simply exquisite, and the plot is the grandest of the four by far. Certainly, this is a different sort of book; it has many darker moments and themes. I firmly believe, however, that these greatly enhance the novel; they make the plot far richer and more spellbinding (I read it in eight non-stop hours). My thanks to Ms. Rowling for producing such an amazing series of books (once of the few I have truly been able to lose myself in). You MUST read this series (especially #4); it is a breath of fresh air in an increasingly complicated world.
