Summary: Great for kids, but...
Review: First of all I would like to note that the low rating I gave to this book comes from my point of view as an adult. I believe that this is a great book for children, as every book which makes a child happy is good (as once said by L. Frank Baum, making a child happy is a holy work), and of course it is very good that a child shall spend hours of his time on a book! Now, for my opinion. As I said earlier it is wonderful for a child, yet I find it a bit unfinished. There is a limited cast of characters and they lack emotional depth, the plot has many surprises but many of them are just foolish. Also, a main character never gets removed (dies), and because of the young age the book is made for you will see that many components are missing (like love, violence, philosophy, etc.). The fact that the book's plot is set in today's world extremely annoyed me, a plot is much better if it happens in a new world (invented by the author). In comparison with masterpieces like "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings", "The Wheel of Time", "The Sword of Truth", "A Song of Ice and Fire", Harry is much worse. I'd like to end the review with the following piece of advice: It's great as an introduction to the fantasy genre and a great book for kids in general.

Summary: Reviewed by Janice Amy Bedford!
Review: I loved this book over all , the beginning was a bit confusing with different names to the baddies but I just skipped those pages and went back to them at the end!! I reccomend this book for ages 8-to adult!!! But don't read this one first read them in order or you wont understand the story! It is quite expensive about £15.00 here in England but it's well worth it!

Summary: THE BEST FROM THE SERIES SO FAR
Review: Harry's getting older, that's for sure. The first page of this book absolutely will give you a shock. It's DIFFERENT. Our wizard had to deal not only with a mean teacher, pile of homeworks, and quidditch training. But here in this book, he had to deal with a confusion of getting a girl for the Ball, face a gigantic dragon, love triangle, lack of friends and respect, and the Lord Voldemort himself. I assure you, you can't possibly put this one down and had to read it again and again even if you don't want to. Another superb work of Ms.Rowling...10 thumbs up!.

Summary: one of the best book i have ever read
Review: i started reading the harry potter series about a month ago. well i could not stop reading the books! i was completly adictied to them. but when i saw how big the 4th book was, i was discouraged. i never liked reading thick books, with the excuse that it would last forever to read them. i have read harry potter and the golblet of fire in 3 days!!!!!!!!! eventhough the action is kinda long to get started, the book get unbearably exciting at the end, and you just won't want to stop reading it. to my opinion, this is the best book in the serie so far. it is a book i recommend to anyone, whether adult or not. now i can't wait for the 5th book to come out. i can't even believe i have re-read the serie 8 times!!!!!!!!!! and who cares if the books are for children 9-12! i'm 14 and that doesn't mean i can't enjoy reading the books too!

Summary: Harry's in his 4th Year!!!
Review: Harry Potter is starting his 4th Year at Hogwarts! This 734-page book is the best yet in the Potter Series. With thrills and chills on each and every page. This year at Hogwarts a mysterious event is occuring that hasn't took place in decades. Be sure to read this 4th novel in the fascinating series of the Harry Potter books!

Summary: For once something lives up to its hype
Review: Normally when something is as publicized as this book was, it can disappoint and not live up to expectations. 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' is a definite exception to this rule. The one thing for me that makes the whole series phenomenon so good is the way that all the books are interlinked together so cleverly. I don't mean that the characters reappear in each novel, although this is obviously true. What I'm talking about is the way if you read each book in the series, you will notice many little details mentioned earlier on spring up at later points in the books. As an example, I give the fact that in book 1, when Harry goes to buy his wand, he is told that his father, James's wand was excellent for transfiguration. In book three, we learn that Harry's father was an animagus, something that requires expertize in transfiguration. There are many other details like this which you will notice if you reread the series. Book four, the Goblet of Fire, in particular is an excellent piece of modern literature. Aside from the cool little references back to earlier books, the best part of this novel is the intense drama and fear that J.K. Rowling expresses in it, more so than has appeared in the first three books. Many people seem to dismiss the Harry Potter books as 'just for kids', but I can assure you that they can be enjoyed equally by adults, on a different level. While kids may like the magic and excitement, adults will enjoy the complexity of the plot and the links which I mentioned earlier on. I have yet to meet a single person, young or old, male or female, who has read this book and not enjoyed it. For those who believe that Harry Potter is anti-Christian, I urge you to read the series before making this judgement and you will see that underneath the surface of witches and wizards lie strong Christian morals. Forgive me is I'm wrong, but I think that Albus Dumbledore, the principal of Harry's school, is supposed to be a metaphor for Jesus and that the loss of the 'Elixir of life' in book one is the symbol of his mortality. Although I'm reviewing 'The Goblet of Fire', I recommend that you read the previous three books first to get full enjoyment of the series. However, having said that, this book can equally stand alone. The only minor quibble I have with this book is the fact that due to its length, it take quite a while to get started; in the English edition of the book, there are around 150 pages of scene setting before Harry even arrives at school. However, all these pages are hugely relevant to the plot and necessary for this story. This really doesn't detract from the quality of the book a great deal and it is still hugely enjoyable despite this. All that is left to say is roll on book 5!!!!

Summary: 10 stars!
Review: This is a superb book, full of suspense, mischief, fun, and adventure! Nobody can say this book wasn't good-it's far from it! I recommend this book to anybody. It's not just about magic, it's about kids having fun.

Summary: Rowling is not Tolkien and Vice Versa
Review: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) is by far the most complex of Rowling's books and the most entertaining. In this book both Rowling and Potter mature. Sure the plot is basically the same - Harry is out of Hogwarts, Harry comes back to Hogwarts, Harry battles Voldemort, Harry goes back to Muggles. What makes this and every other book in the series unique is what happens to Harry along the way, the characters he meets and the situations that he finds himself in. His relationship with Hermione and Ron matures. With the new characters and situations, his and our lives are richer.

For those who keep a keen eye on Quidditch, we go beyond the intramural scene and are treated to the Quidditch World Cup. Now that has got to have a whole set of possiblilties built into it and Rowling does not disappoint. See, I got into this whole thing from this book (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4)) then I had to read the first three books in order to even appreciate the history of Harry Potter. I think it is fair to say that the book can stand alone but it is made so much richer as part of an evolution. Evolution is key here as we meet folks who come to the Triwizard Tournament. I may not have seen a Veela but I am sure I am in love. Alastair "Mad Eye" Moody and Rita Skeeter are a wonderful addition and Hermione's need to save the enslaved house elves is a real concrete step by Rowling to infuse a sense of humanity.

I think it is a mistake to compare Rowling with Tolkien as they are as different as black and white. Tolkien's Epic of travel and return is more akin to ancient Homeric legends - the stuff of the Epic genre - there and back again. I see more C.S. Lewis in these set of books as the character goes from one "space" to another. In the Harry Potter series, there is the Muggle world and the world of Magic - existing side by side and sometimes interacting. Conversely, with Tolkien, Bilbo or Frodo where in Middle Earth - just different areas at different times - not like two separate "realms" existed. This style of writing is also reminiscent of Stephen R. Donaldson - who employs the same style but certainly for a more mature audience. There is no real "Epic" to speak of, but yes there is that battle of good versus evil. In Harry Potter, the lines are clearly drawn; with Donaldson they are not. The only way to really appreciate the Harry Potter series is to take it for itself and just have fun with it.

Summary: READ, IT'S WORTH IT
Review: When I first read Harry Potter, I nearly chucked the book across the room, but, after reading the first three, the fourth book seemed to jump right into action. I like the characters Rowling creates like Bagman, or Rita Skeeter. Like all the other critics who read this book, I think you should read the other three in their respective orders first. Not, however, because it has info that you'll want, but you need the plot of them, the suspense! Harry is living with his horrible relatives, and is dying to go anywhere besides the Dursley's home. I won't give away the plot. Read the book! (Note that, even though I'm one, I didn't err in the spelling)
