Rating: Summary: Like watching the film... almost Review: I say this is WAY BETTER THAN THE NOVEL, you gotta read this if you want to know Lucas's TRUE vision of Episode I; but still the book has some low points however: they could at least improve the paperback quality, and I would had fill it with real screenshots among the storyboards. Besides you can use it to learn more about Lucas's storytelling style: this was written entirely by George Lucas that's why the whimp hollywood critics say that the film has a very chessy dialogue, I partially agree with them, but I still say Lucas is a wonderful storyteller and he deserves more credit, however there are some problems on these writtings that even a man with a big imagination has to deal with: I know that when you write a whole story and you make the dialogue yourself you tend to repeat the same lines again later (ex.: "you assume to much") the Star Wars IV's script has the same problem, good thing Lucas has hired another guy to help him finish the Ep.II script. I definitely liked the way this book is written, and I'm sure the film's dialogue would have been better if some lines of this book were not deleted.
Rating: Summary: Too Early for Oscar predictions? I think we have a winner... Review: I thought I was immune to the hype until I read this book. I did go to Zeller's (the Canadian version of Wal-Mart) on Sunday May 2 just before midnight, to pick up a couple of action figures, Darth Maul and Mace Windu, just for a novelty. But that was the end of my merchandise purchasing for a while at least I thought. I wake up the next morning and go to a book super store and see that the staff is fiddling with their Episode One display. I look at some colouring books, the novelizations, all very nice... then I spot an open box on the floor. Curiousity gets the best of me and I look in the box: before me is the object that has eluded Internet surfers for the last few years-- The Screenplay. I snap it up without hesitation.I only stopped reading the thing to watch the premiere of the London Symphony Orchestra's music video on Muchmusic. Most screenwriting handbooks will tell you that a screenplay is only a blueprint, and most of them will stress that most screenplays, even of good movies, are a bore to read. Not so this screenplay: Even without the illustrations, it is a vivid read. I was overwhelmed with elation with every bit of dialogue uttered by the characters. I don't know if this screenplay has the final dialogue from the film (which was apparently re-tooled by pro script doctor Carrie Fisher) but the voices rang true for me. And the scene descriptions are amazing as well. Most screenplays leave a lot of set and blocking description to the imagination and discretion of the director, but since Lucas had to tightly shoot the scenes to accomodate his special effects, the scene descriptions read like a good novel. Reading this before seeing the movie has not ruined the story for me: in fact, I want more than ever to see the film so that I can take what must be (according to the screenplay) sumptuous visuals and to hear what will be classic dialogue uttered by great actors. I can see George Lucas getting nominated for an Oscar for this. It's that good.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: I was talking with a co-worker the other day and said "with all this hype about the new Star Wars film, wouldn't it be terrible if it sucked." Glad to see that that will not be the case. Today I read the screenplay and can only say WOW...gotta see this one. As for the read...much, much better than a lot of screenplays I've read. Thanks George, and May the force be with you always.
Rating: Summary: Star Wars epesode1 Review: I WOULD SAY IT WAS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME. IT IS ABOUT TWO DIFFERNT SIDE THE REPUBLIC & THE FEDERATION. THEY ARE AT WAR. THE FEDERATION IS TRYING TO DISTRY THE PLANET NABOO. OUI-GON & OBI-WON KONOBER SAVES THE PLANTS.
Rating: Summary: A best bet Review: If you are willing to buy the TPM screenplay(you can get it for free on the Internet), this is your best bet. It has a selection of the orginal storyboards, cut scenes(this is the uncut screenplay), a introduction by producer Rick Mccalum, and the underwater and battle storyboards in order, kinda like a movie effect. If you like Star Wars, buy this!
Rating: Summary: Awesome! Review: It was way cool! I didn't read the end until after I saw the movie Friday but what I did read was awesome! The pictures were also great and I didn't realize George Lucas was such a good writer! Mesa liked it a lot!
Rating: Summary: it was friggin incredible Review: ive seen the movie 6 times so far and i think the screen play is incredible because it has scenes that arent in the movie so it makes reading the screenplay just as much if not more enjoyable than going to the theater and seeing the film which is truly incredible. Thanks George for making a great film that has a wonderful story and a great message, i am anxiously waiting episode 2, you can take as much time as you want to make it, it doesnt matter how long it takes to make it, as long as its entertaining. thanks again. peace out yo!
Rating: Summary: It will only feed your anticipation Review: One word "excellent." The only problem is that is will ruin the story, but if it doesn't matter either way then enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Great book for younger readers! Review: Similar to the Scholastic storybooks of the 70's and 80's, this book is a quick but inclusive retelling of the events of Episode I with some great photographs throughout. The serious Star Wars fan probably has seen most of the photos, before, but that doesn't take anything away from this book. I learned to read on a copy of Scholastic's Star Wars Storybook over twenty years ago, and this book is a venerable successor to that series; I hope some day my own children use this one the same way.
Rating: Summary: Only the photos are any good; get the scrapbook instead! Review: The most annoying thing about this book is that it is all written in past tense. Even the opening narration text that appears in the film has been changed to past tense. This book is not worth reading if you can get your hands on anything better, pertaining to this film. I can much more recommend the Phantom Menace Movie Scrapbook, for almost 200 color photos from the film; or the Illustrated Screenplay, which tells the story alot better, and in much greater detail and accuracy, (it even has interesting scenes and dialogue that ended up getting edited out of the final film version). This book is poorly written, but the photos are worth looking at. -Bryan Leed, Dayton, Ohio
