Summary: A Colleagues' Review of Dr. Carayannis' Book
Review: Dr. Carayannis provides an in-depth exposition of the issues surrounding learning, strategic planning and organizational performance for technology-driven organizations. These issues are complex and not well understood in the literature. Nevertheless, Dr. Carayannis recommends that an alternative theory of the firm be developed to begin addressing the complexity of strategic planning in technology oriented firms. He provides the first step in this direction by juxtaposing various schools of decision-making, provides an overview of the various paradigms in decision-making, and details how culture, feedback, and learning facilitate decision-making. He then provides a plethora of empirical evidence from transport manufacturing, processing industries, and electric power generation facilities. At the end Dr. Carayannis integrates the theories with the empirical evidence into a very useful research framework. It is this framework that will allow future researchers to address a variety of hypotheses concerning the relationship among learning, strategic planning and organizational performance of technology-driven organizations. This provides an important contribution to the literature on the management of technological firms.

Review: Elias Carayannis's book is essential reading for anyone interested in the theory of the firm and how the different approaches can be integrated. His discussion of triple-loop learning is particularly helpful. The book provides a comprehensive guide to the theory of the subject, and is supported by insightful examples from a number of different firms in the automotive, aerospace, defense, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and electric power generation industries in the US and Europe.
