Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Even 8 years later a very valuable book to own! Review: **Good** news for engineers and physicists : Volume II of "The EDFA book" is in progress, and will be released soon. The first volume, published in 1994, still provides unmatched reference for serious understanding of the complex EDFA physics. However, for causality reasons, it does not cover industrial developments that will appear only years later. Such developments have been sketched by more recent, wide-audience and shorter introductory books, but of limited use to the true specialists. Volume II will bridge such a gap and will provide the first XXIst century update in this field. **Bad** news for some 'millioneers' in quest of quick-and-dirty EDFA expertise : Volume II will be as involved as volume I on the physics and mathematics side, while it will cover in depth the most recent industrial developments, with detailed contributions from corporate- and internationally-recognized developers. Definitely not to put in any hands or recommend to people who don't need to "know". Emmanuel Desurvire

Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: not very useful Review: I had high hopes for this book and tried to work with it for a long while (especially given the high price). However it is much too difficult to understand and does not explain things clearly. It is very confusing to follow and it seems like the author's mind was jumping around a lot in many of the chapters.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The EDFA "Bible" Review: Rarely an author captures the essense of the topic he/she is covering in such depth and clarity as E. Desurvire does in his EDFA book. Over the years I have found the book extremely useful and helpful in understanding all the intriguing notions involved in the EDFA performance. The book exposes the fundamental EDFA issues in great depth and detail and therefore it will always remain relevant and extremely useful. It always helps when the author of a book is one of the pioneers in the field he/she is covering.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: fine but out-of-date book Review: This book gives many details of the principle and application of EDFA
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: 1994 is centuries ago in internet time. Review: This book is too long and too old. It goes though tto much unnecessary math. It spends a lot of time on minor details, while avoiding some of the real issues - how to design a modern EDFA. Im mathematically inclined, so the math was not bad, but if you're pictorially inclined this is not the book for you.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Still remains 'Bible on EDFA' Review: This is an excellent book for serious workers on EDFAs. Serves as good reference for scientists and engineers. The approach taken by author is rigrous and extensive. Discusses EDFA characteristics and applications with equal depth. Only drawback of this book is that, it was written about 10 years ago and so does not cover more recent advances.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The best source Review: Yes, there are some easier books, in terms of reading and understanding. Yes, there are books more colorful than this one. Yes, there are some books with less formulas than this one. Yes, there are some errors in this book. However, if you really need to study and understand EDFA, read it. If somebody publishes a book more complete and more detailed than I will rate Desurvire's book with less stars.
