Summary: Great Place to Start for Future Problem Solvers
Review: "Contest Problem Book V" will be helpful for students preparing for the America Mathematics Competitions (AMC), and it will be a great place to start for anyone who wants to become good at solving problems. The problems in this volume require only precalculus mathematics, but they are non-routine. Some of the problems can be quite challenging; although in general, the problems are less difficult than olympiad or Putnam problems.

This book stands out among the dozens of problem collections out there because it contains a bibliography of problem collections, books on problem solving, and mathematics journals that have problem sections. More than just a list of other books, this bibliography contains extensive notes and can therefore serve as a valuable source of guidance for students learning the art of problem solving.

At present there are six "Contest Problem Books" each containing reprints of the American High School Mathematics Exam (AHSME). Like the others, this book contains AHSMEs; but unlike the others, it also contains reprints of the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME). The AIME's format makes it unique among math competitions. In my opinion it is one of the most fun of all mathematics competitions. Doing AIME problems is great way for people to develop the skills necessary to be able to do olympiad or Putnam problems.

So because of the amazingly helpful bibliography, because of the AHSME and AIME problems it contains, and because doing AIME problems is great way to get good enought to do olympiad-level problems, this volume will be great a place to start for anyone who wants to be a good problem solver. I thought the problems were a lot of fun, and the advice in the bibliography helped me out a great deal. It is a pleasure to give this book five stars!
