Summary: Completely fascinating... and inspiring, too!!
Review: I came across Jennifer Michael Hecht's other nonfiction book "Doubt: A History" and it changed my life. I checked this other book out and found it to be just excellent. I'm a science buff and a history buff.. this is right up my alley. Hecht's writing is so cool that I could read anything she writes, but this happens to be one of the wildest, weirdest, most fascinating story I've ever heard of.

Besides being a riveting account of an amazing group of French scientists and how they basically founded the science of anthropology, "The End of the Soul" goes on to tell how these guys (and one very, very formidable woman) influenced many different aspects of the world as we know it.

If you like criminology (CSI fan?), feminism, sociology, medicine, necrology, skulls, brains, psychology, and discussing the great questions of life... you will enjoy this book. I've discovered my new hero, Leonce Manouvrier, by reading "The End of the Soul"... I'm sure you'll find a few heroes and heroines, as well.
