Description:

The Nutritional Health Bible is truly an A-to-Z guide on to how to use food and supplements to fight disease and improve health. Based on a review of scientific studies, the book describes the importance and sources of the standard vitamins, minerals, and trace elements, and provides intriguing insight into herbs, amino acids, and "superfoods" such as fish oils. Linda Lazarides, a British nutritional therapist, gives cautious, scientifically based advice, which is a relief from the hype that sometimes accompanies descriptions of alternative therapies.

While most of the book summarizes everything from vitamin A to macrobiotics, nori (a seaweed) to zinc, another section, titled "Nutritional Causes of Illness," puts the research in context for those interested in self-help. Lazarides, who has worked for Britain's National Health Service, warns against viewing the research as proof of cause and effect between nutrition and disease. Rather, she says, it should be viewed as evidence of "a role for nutritional factors in disease causation and treatment." The book suggests some nutritional factors in everything from Alzheimer's to ulcers, and some potential remedies for each. And it contains advice for dieters ("slimmers," as the British term it), vegetarians, pregnant women, the elderly, and others. The Nutritional Health Bible is also useful for its listing of supplement information, and vitamin and mineral recommendations by the British and U.S. governments. Anyone interested in a holistic approach to health will find this book to be a valuable reference.
