Rating: Summary: An excellent book and credible Review: As a physician who suffers with fibromyalgia, I am stunned at the many books available for lay readers on how to treat fibromyalgia. That's why when I find a book that is credible with NO HYPE, I carefully read it and tell my patients. THE FIBROMYALGIA HANDBOOK by McIlwain is such a book. It is filled with scientific studies, easy-to-understand explanations, and a 7-step plan that is guaranteed to reduce your stress and chronic muscle pain--if you commit to doing it. The sleep and nutrition chapters were especially helpful to me, as I've found when i lose sleep, I hurt more. Thank you for writing something we can trust, Dr. McIlwain.
Rating: Summary: IF you have FMS, you NEED this book. Review: Best book out there on fibromyalgia. I've had FMS for seven years and NOTHING--has worked. I read this book three weeks ago--and the 7-step plan REALLY WORKS. If your chronic muscle pain and sleeplessness is affected by daily stressors--grab this book and do what it says. Also try the medications it recommends, including the new Super Aspirins (Celebrex)--which END muscle pain. The exercises also help to keep muscles flexible and ends that "knotted" feeling. BUY THIS BOOK! It will change the way you live with FMS.
Rating: Summary: The BEST book on FMS I've ever read--and it works!!!!!! Review: Excellent book! I read the first Fibromyalgia Handbook and found it somewhat helpful. Yet this newly revised version has everything I needed to know about treatments that REALLY WORK, including guaifenisin (Robitussin), magnet therapy, Super-malic, and other alternative forms of pain relief. I especially like the fact that a rheumatologist wrote it--which means the available treatments have been evaluated--and only the best are recommended. IF YOU HAVE FMS--BUY THIS BOOK. It will change your life.
Rating: Summary: NEW REVISED BOOK IS NOW OUT - 3rd Edition 2003 Review: I am in the process of seeing a specialist for fibromyalgia after suffering symptoms for many years. I am a 39 year old mom of 4! This book helped me feel I wasn't alone and this wasn't all in my head. The case studies were very helpful and relatable. The diet and supplement info was educational and confirmed for me that antioxidants help tremendously! Also the extreme importance of exercise is emphasized. Thanks!
Rating: Summary: Excellent source of information on a puzzling syndrome Review: I read this book because my wife has fibromyalgia. She got this after surgery and has experienced overall muscle pain and fatigue for three years. It (the disease) effected every part of our life, and I wanted to help her. I began the program with her--we do the exercises, stress control, diet, and even have tried some of the alternative treatments. It's superb how making lifestyle changes can help you reduce pain, increase energy and sleep sounder. This author knew what he was talking about when he wrote this book--would love to read more about this illness and treatment. I'd recommend this to anyone who has fibromyalgia or who has a loved one with this disease.
Rating: Summary: Excellent medical reporting about a horrible illness Review: I read this book twice after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. At first the "cure" seemed so easy--take medications for sleep, exercise and moist heat to decrease pain, and de-stress my life. But . . . it works. Some may think this is a simplistic answer to a complex disease with no cure--but as a PhD in anatomy who lives with FMS--it takes a multi-faceted approach to managing the symptoms. This book is RIGHT on base with how this is done. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: SUPERB book on FMS--a painful and debilitating problem Review: My wife has fibromyalgia and until she read this book, she lived with the unending muscle pain, fatigue to the point of exhaustion, and anxiety. Thank you, Dr. McIlwain and Mrs. Bruce!! This book changed her life--and our marriage. She started the 7 steps and the exercise was difficult for the first few weeks. I was her "coach" and encouraged her to stick with the program. She began taking the natural supplements suggested (she had great luck with SAMe), for pain and sleeplessness. There is no cure for FMS her doctor told us but using this book, she has her life again. She is back to her teaching job, and we do things together after work. If you have fibromyalgia, realize there is new information on how to LIVE successfully with this problem. READ this book. It might change your life too. SM
Rating: Summary: NEW REVISED BOOK IS NOW OUT - 3rd Edition 2003 Review: These authors continue keeping us up to date on the latest treatment for Fibromyalgia. Their new revised book just came out and is outstanding. In the newly revised edition of his popular handbook, Dr. Harris H. McIlwain offers hope to millions of sufferers. The proven 7-step treatment program includes the very latest in such medications as Cox-2 Inhibitors, the breakthrough drugs that reduce pain and inflammation. The authors McIlwain and Bruce are on top of this subject!
