Rating: Summary: Great, brief introduction to ancient Greece Review: If you're looking for something shorter than _Ancient Greece_ by Sarah B. Pomeroy, et al (500 pages) or _Life of Greece_ by Will Durant (700 pages), then this luscious 200 page book filled with 376 beautiful illustrations and photographs (107 in color) will likely be just what you're looking for. And despite an extreme economy of text, it is able to cover not only the major points but add many details, even pointing out where scholarly opinion varies on certain issues. Of course, its text being but a fraction of the other two works it can't hope to offer you their depth, but I think you will find it to be a wonderful place to start -- and not a bad place to end if this is all you read on ancient Greece.
Their chapter titles:
I Who were the Greeks?
II The First Greeks
III The Heroic Age
IV The Age of Expanding Horizons
V Polis: The Early Greek City
VI Classical Athens
VII Gods and Heroes
VIII Greek Art and Architecture
IX Alexander and the Hellenistic World
X Romans and Christians
