Rating: Summary: Third use Review: A friend lent me this book and it gave me a third use for animals. First, they should be good tasting. I love a good porter steak. Second, good fitting. Leather jackets and shoes are so comfortable. **Thrird**, (this is the new one) try products that might not be suitable for human use. If you think drug trials on animals are cruel, try it on humans
Rating: Summary: entertaining, good info Review: another reviewer of this book made this assertion:"This book, I find offensive. Offensive as being a human. These people calling themselves the ALF take it on their own to impeade medical research that saves lives. They "Free the animals" because THEY beleive it's "the right thing to do". Tell me this: If youre mother was dying of cancer, would you say "Sure, go ahead and free the animals that might yeild lifesaving research". Of COURSE NOT. These people are a disgrace to humanity. Don't support this peice of animal rights cant." What I learned from this book, however, is that many laboratories perform unnecessary experiments on animals. Dr. Taub(from the first chapter)'s disgusting experiments on monkeys, and the Navy's practice of using dogs to study pressure sickness underwater or whatever it's called, for example. This makes me doubt that this person even read the book. He does not understand the philosophy of the ALF, and the animal rights movement in general, which is that just because beings are defenseless and less intelligent does not mean that they don't have rights. I would doubt that this person would find it acceptable to do these experiments on mentally retarded human beings, or his own pet for that matter. Of course animal research is a moral dilemma, but the ALF never liberated animals that had any meaningful research performed on them. I don't support vivisection at all, even if it is "meaningful". That is my personal opinion, and I respect those who disagree with me. But the review I have critiqued is just ignorant. I hope nobody let it influence their decision to buy this book or not. I got it out of the library, but I would reccomend purchasing it if you're thinking about doing that.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book!!! Review: Anyone who loves animals MUST read this book and those who aren't fond of animals...this book will change your way of thinking. Each rescue the liberators performed made me hold my breath in anticipation. I cried one minute and the next minute I cheered for every liberation. I read this book in only two days...unable to put it down. I have always loved animals, but this book will make you realize that animals aren't just cute and fluffy, but they are individuals who equally deserve a chance at survival. They feel pain, sadness and happiness just as any human does. I would recommend this book to anyone who is eager to learn more about animal rights!
Rating: Summary: An Easy & Enjoyable Read, But Not Much Substance Review: As an animal rights advocate, I have mixed feelings about both ALF and PETA. While I understand why some people resort to direct action, I'm unsure as to whether it actually hurts the movement in the long run. Having said that, I found this book to be inspirational, but overall rather bland. "Free the Animals" reads like a novel, but one aimed at adolescents. It's a bit long, but goes quickly, as its writing style is rather juvenile. The story is a moving one, but ultimately I didn't really gain anything by reading it; it's comprised mostly of anectdotes rather than providing a comprehensive overview of animal experimentation (to be fair, it doesn't claim to do so). It was hardly impartial, especially in regards to PETA, as it was written by Ingrid Newkirk (PETA's role in some of the incidents seemed to be over-exaggerated to me). This book, in my opinion, would make an appropriate gift for a high-schooler who's interested in animals but hasn't yet adopted a humane (read: vegetarian or vegan) lifestyle. I would describe the book's reading level as young adult, and it should be enough to inspire an AR ethic in any concerned animal lover (another good book for this purpose would be "Slaughterhouse" by Gail Eisnitz). However, don't buy this book if you're looking for anything more.
Rating: Summary: Life Changing Review: Besides Animal Liberation by Peter Singer, this is by far the best "Animal Rights" book I have ever read. While I may not agree 100% with what the ALF does, I do agree that animals are not ours to experiment on. If you're new to the Animal Rights movement, this book will shock you. It's appalling to read what is done to these poor, helpless animals. The book is about "Valerie" and how the ALF started in North America. Reading the stories will probably make you cry.. but then you'll cheer!!! At the end of the book, "Valerie" makes a plea to all readers to do something. Whether it be volunteering your time at the shelter, adopting a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, boycotting companies who test on animals and so forth. Just do something.

Rating: Summary: Okay, nobody condones the suffering of animals but... Review: Disease vectors in your home (mice, roaches), pests in your garden and in our ecosystem (Asian Longhorn beetle, Gypsy Moth), subsistence foodsources in plant limited environments (seals & fish to the Artic native peoples), all examples of legitimate killing of animals for human purposes, legitimate ones. Protecting our families, our property, nourishing our bodies are all real reasons to use animals and their products. While factory farming and gratuitous animal experiments bare close examination, we must maintain the status quo for important and ethical consumption of animals for human purposes. Yes indeed.
Rating: Summary: A Great book for everyone!!! Review: Free the Animals was a great novel for animal lovers & everyone else.It opened the eyes of our society to the raw cruelty in labratories.I got very involved in the book while reading it & it has a diverse plot with suspense, romance & everything else.Free the Animals describes an account of an ex cop doing the opposite of what she should do--going against the law in order to save animals lives. It is very descriptive in the aspect of what really goes on behind closed doors.Free the Animals really deserves 5 stars & I recommend it to anyone!!!!
Rating: Summary: Animal Liberation Front, please Review: Humans are the only species that matters on earth. Animals, all animals were put here by God for our use. Animal rights is an oxymoron. Animals have no rights. Animals are ours for us to do whatever we want, whenever want. Is John Travolta an animal? I don't know. Anyway, save your money, buy a hat or something. But don't buy this book.
Rating: Summary: Incredible True Story Review: I can't even begin to explain how much i was moved by this true story of an animal rights activist and her devotion to the rescue of tortured animals. Written by Ingrid Newkirk, the President of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), this book is the best account of the trials and tribulations of the Animal Liberation Front to date. For those of you who don't know, the Animal Liberation Front is a group of animal rights activists who believe in direct action as opposed to protests and other grassroots activities. They are also second after the KKK on the governments list of domestic terrorists. Terrorists? Definitely not, as in their history they have never hurt one person. This in stark contrast to the people they're up against, who torture and kill hundreds of thousands of animals every year. I guarantee those of you who claim to be animal lovers will get your money's worth with this one. Great book.
