Rating: Summary: A must have if you want an interesting and practical Guide Review: A must have for people that want a well written and practical guide to the different Genus of carnivorous plants and how to grow them. Well written and not overly technical, The Savage Garden was interesting as well as practical reading for the hobbyist grower. When I received this book, I read it cover to cover, staying up until 3AM. The Savage Garden was exceedingly well organized and the information was, by my experience, accurate. I particularly like the way he organized the book, with growing information for the Genus and species grouped logically at the end of each section, instead of spread throughout the book. It makes it much easier to use as a reference for growers. If you own but on book on these plants, this should be the one.
Rating: Summary: This is a very great and useful book. Review: After reading this book, the first thought in my mind is "This is the best book which I ever read." In this book, you can find anything about how to grow carnivorous plants. And there are so many great pictures in it, too. Thus, I think that if you are the person who never grow this kind of plant, and you want to grow them now. This book will be your best choice. Trust me, and you will make it!
Rating: Summary: The best text available on carnivororus plant culture. Review: As a grower and seller of carnivorous plants I always try to refer customers to a good book on the subject to delve deeper into the subject. When Peter D'Amato published The Savage Garden I found I had a resource beyond my highest expectations to lead them to. This book is detailed, concise, easy to read, has lots of beautiful photographs, and is designed to let the average person be successful growing carnivorous plants. I can't recommend it enough.
Rating: Summary: Among the best books in its field Review: As a long-time grower of CP, I must say that this book ranks witht the best in its field-along with such classics as Slack, LeCoufle and Pietrapolo. My only regret is that it is not available in hardcover.
Rating: Summary: Publisher's Weekly Review Review: Beyond the Venus flytrap stretch the father horizons of "the strange world of carnivorous plants," chronicled in The Savage Garden: Cultivating Carnivorous Plants. Guiding readers, squemish or not, through this unfamiliar terrain is Peter D'Amato, owner of a carnivorous plant nursery in California. Covering cultivation and offering a directory of popular species, sundews and American pitcher plants among them, D'Amato capitalizes on the shivery associations commonly inspired by his subjects, as in the title of his final chapter, "Other Savage Plants from the Demented Mind of Mother Nature." (Ten Speed, $19.95 320p ISBN 0-89815-915-6; June)
Rating: Summary: The source for beginners and experts alike Review: D'amato does a great job in how he presents the many techniques for growing cp's. He gives a realistic description of how tolerant they are. It prompted me to take many of my plants out of the terrarium, with great success. Most other books only suggest that if you already live in sarracenia territory. The species-by-species description is very helpful, almost a field guide. I use it to identify the little seedlings that I almost always get extra in commercial orders. Thanks Cook's Carnivores for those little unexpected extras.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful. Review: Get this book even if you don't love carnivorous plants
Rating: Summary: The Savage Garden Review: Have owned nearly all the carniverous plant books since the early 60's. If i had to choose only one book, this would be the one!
