Rating: Summary: A quick read; great nonetheless Review: Ok, ok. Julia Butterfly is now a celebrity in her own right, she's doing the speaking tour, now the book... so watch for the majormotion picture......Well, cynics beware! This is a great book, and the integrity, honor, intelligence and love flows from Julia onto the pages and into your heart. I was especially struck by her humanity- no superhero, she speaks freely of her doubt and of her fear. But always you see her courage and depth of commitment. Our country is blessed to have her in our midst at this time... fewer than 1% of our original forests remain in the lower 48 states. It is indeed time to stop, and to use our brains. The book is a quick read- I finished it in 1 night- but I'm returning to it again and again, like my favorite CD's. I have no illusions though, that this book was written in a fortnight... she was up there for 738 days; plenty of time for writing! (Plus, the negotiations necessary to produce the book in the manner that follows her convictions). She says what needs to be said- no more, no less. If you are curious about what it's like to sit in a tree for 2 years sustained by the strength of your convictions, get the book. If you can, go see her speak. She's intelligent and articulate. Julia is a hero, and this is the story of her awakening.
Rating: Summary: Really Great Review: I was incredibly moved by this book. Finished it this morning as I walked up the hill to work and was all weepy by the time I got in the elevator. I found this to be as suspenseful and interesting as Into Thin Air, mostly bcause of how different the experience is from anything I will ever do in my own life. Also, I am delighted when anyone takes a stand about anything, especially corporations. We Americans are way too complacent.
Rating: Summary: it inspired me ! Review: I began to read this book while I have been suffering from a deep depression. I wanted to read something uplifting, something meaningful and loving, and filled with insight. As I started to read it, I became drawn in. It has inspired me to write a book myself about my life in Croatia, where I was born and where I experienced trauma, violence and death. It has nothing to deal with trees but the stuggle is the same. This tree is so elderly and contains so much wisdom we could never imagine. The book is wonderful if you want to apply it to your life in all kinds of ways, and not just in service.
Rating: Summary: This Book Does Not Compare With Julia's Great Feat - Sorry! Review: Let me be perfectly clear: Julia Butterfly Hill has done a great thing for us all with her two-year stint in the tree called Luna. However, this book is a crashing disappointment. It was obviously written quickly, perhaps at the urging of the publisher's desire to cash-in on Julia's fifteen minutes of fame ( the book was in the stores only three months after Julia came down from the tree!). I guess I had hoped the book would tell me more about Julia's life prior to the tree-sit; after all, how many evangelist's daughters go off to save the earth? Julia's story is very compelling, but this book does nothing to flesh it out. And the cover photograph? Looks more like something for Vanity Fair, all touched-up like that. Yikes! They're making Julia into an Icon, a Rock-Star! I'm afraid her message about the forests will be lost in her celebrity! At least all the author's earnings for this book will go for the forest's cause.
Rating: Summary: Tuned into the spirit Review: This is a very moving account of a person who quiets herself to hear the universal spirit. She repeats that it was only through its guidance that she wound up in the tree and found the resolve to stay there. Don't read this book too quickly !
Rating: Summary: Julia is an inspiration to us all! Review: This is a fascinating book. I couldn't put it down. It dispells a lot of mis-information that was out there about her. It's hard to believe that any mere mortal could have gone through what she did and keep such a positive attitude. I was fortunate enough to meet her and hear her speak at a book signing last week. She is truly remarkable, sweet and very genuine. She doesn't take one moment of her life for granted. I think history will show that she is one of the most inspirational people of our time. Good luck, Julia!
Rating: Summary: An Amazing Woman..An Amazing story..Great BOOK! Review: Julia Butterfly's book is a must read to any activist or person who believes that they cannot make a difference in shining the positive light in a negative world. She is so inspiring...I can't wait to share this book w/ my family and friends. I savor the read, taking in a little at a time..she is such a visual and creative writer...take the adventure with Julia..you won't be disappointed. She is the epitome of strength, love, compassion, and survival.
Rating: Summary: Life changing book--couldn't put it down! Review: The story told by this book was so fabulous I went out of myway to see Julia Butterfly Hill at a book signing. What is amazing about Julia is the way she turned even loggers around with her loving attitude, patiently explaining herself until they could "hear" that what she purported would actually SAVE jobs in the long run, and what Maxxam proposed would destroy jobs very quickly.
Rating: Summary: This book is love on paper Review: I've always heard people say, "I loved this book so much, I couldn't put it down," but I've never had that experience. That is, until I picked up Luna. I was up until 3am finishing it, because I had to know what happened. And because I felt so entranced by this woman and her story, I didn't want it to end. Which is why, after I finished the book, I tiptoed out to my computer to look at her website. I had to have more. Now, I've loaned my copy out to a friend, because this story shines - it will warm the coldest of hearts, and soften the hardest of souls. I am buying 2 more copies, so that I can loan them to my friends and family. This is one of those special, sparkling books that truly will make the world a kinder place. Please read it.
Rating: Summary: social commentary & personal transformation Review: Julia writes with tremendous clarity on the personal transformation required to move beyond social and planetary destruction as an acceptable way to pay off the junk bond debts of corporate raiders. She wrote most (all?) of this book while in Luna, and it shows in her complete focus. A fast, harrowing, rewarding read.
