Summary: An unforgettable story
Review: First of all before I write the review, I wrote one using the same e-mail address on October 31, 1999 about "into the heart" by Kenneth Good. I believe it is still on the web. I can't remember what password I used then so I have now written a new one.

Now for the review:

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So much so that I am now reading it the second time! Anyone who has love and compassion for animals will love this marvellously written piece of literature, a personal experience story. The author has a remarkable easy-to read writing style that speaks to the heart of the reader.

She possesses a unique sense of humour and it is difficult to put this book down until it is read from cover to cover. I like to read when I commute by bus, and last week I almost went past my bus stop as I was so deeply immersed in the book. From beginning to end this was a very pleasurable reading experience.

If you can visualize a lion cub living with a human family and a dog, you will see how love can transcend species differences you will see the amazing bonding that had taken place between humans, a lion, and a dog. It is a poignant story of nurturing, caring, and parenting an orphan lion who at times thought he was a dog and acted like one. My only hope is that the author will write a sequel to this book in which she may reveal not only how Leo the lion is doing now with his wives and offspring, but how she, her husband, and families are continuing their lives and what other animals they may have adopted since the departure of Leo.

Summary: Touching and funny story about life in Africa
Review: First, the stories of Africa made me so homesick. I lived in South Africa for many years as a child and had the unique opportunity to hold a lion cub in my own arms and feed it just for a few minutes. After such an experience, one is never the same and I am now in love with all cats. They are incredible creatures.

There are some really funny stories about "Leo," a lion cub Kobus finds and the family learns to look after. The story is just so wonderful and shows how animals give us so much love.

"As Leo grew larger and more powerful, he also developed a lion-size personality. He couldn't resist stalking and pouncing on us, and we got in the habit of glancing nervously over our shoulders and bracing for impact."

There are also some stories about snakes and other dangers in Africa. A close encounter with a spitting cobra made me remember one of my own in our kitchen in Africa. My father was very brave and removed the snake, but not without a fight. These are real-life adventures and if you have ever lived on a farm in Africa, you will have some stories to tell.

If you love cats or dream of living in Africa, you must read this book. If you are thinking of visiting the Kruger National Park, remember...don't scare your mother by rolling down the windows. Yes, I did that when we visited a wildlife park in South Africa. Right by a pride of lions. My mother has never forgiven me. As children, we had no fear!

Africa is an amazing place and once visited is not soon forgotten.

Summary: A Wonderful, Well-Told Story
Review: I devoured this book cover to cover. It's well written and a wonderful story of the author's time at Kruger National Park in South Africa. You'll laugh with her, cry with her, be frightened with her, and be amazed by her experiences. My only complaint was that - when finished - I simply wanted more of this book.

Summary: A delightful, wonderful, poignant story
Review: I enjoyed reading "The Wilderness Family" so much that I have read it twice! The story was so inspiring, so moving, and so interesting, that I could not get enough of it!

It is evident that the author passionately loves animals, and can see things from the perspective of her animal charges. The love, trust and bonding that had occurred between a lion and his "foster mother" and human family is evident on every page of the book. Some parts of the book are hilarious, other parts speak of a strong person who is not afraid of adventures that some of us would define as HAIR RAISING. The story shows that humans can get attached to animals and animals will reciprocate and display the same love, caring, and affection towards their human benefactors.

Leo the lion was treated with love and dignity but at the same time he was taught to accept authority and sometimes gentle discipline. He had learned to understand what the word NO meant.

The author's delightful sense of humour adds to the enjoyment of this lovely piece of literature. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves animals, who has compassion for creatures of the wild, who understands that animals just like humans experience the same range of emotions of love, fear, grief, joy, loyalty. I just loved reading about the rapport and bond that had developed between the dog and the lion. Highly unusual for a wild animal to regard a dog as a role model and mentor.

Other great animal-human bonding stories I have read are: "The Bears and I" by Robert Franklin Leslie, Ballantine Books Inc. New York and a more recent book: "Summers with the Bears" by Jack Becklund

Summary: read this one if you like to laugh and cry
Review: I loved this book it has it all! Take a woman put her in the wilderness and surround her with men, children, dogs, horses elephants and more and see where you end up. This book was written by a woman who has a great sense of humor living in one of the harshest of environments. Raising a lion cub that grows to think he is a dog getting spit at by a cobra that lives in her garden,"I don't think I would do much weeding". You will laugh at her as she introduces herself to her dentist because she doesn't know who he is. Parting with the lion she raised as one of her own, you will laugh and cry but you will never forget this book.

Summary: Wonderful
Review: I read this book in about two days. Having just gotten back from a safari trip to Africa, I could almost hear the hippos grunting and the lions roaring again while reading this book, and could only wish I was Kobie. I hope Leo is doing great. I'm worried about him in Zimbabwe with all the current problems. Anyway, read this one. It was great!
